There comes a point in time where your calm baby suddenly start to scream, and scream A LOT. Once they discover that they can use their voice to get your attention, they're more than happy to use it.
When this starts, itt's easy to fall into the trap of teaching them that screaming is the way to get you do quickly do whatever they want. Rather than learning to develop more sophisticated communication skills, they fall into a pattern of just screaming whenever they have a want or need.
In this video I'll share how you can avoid this common pitfall, and how you can encourage your little one to continue developing those all important communication skills beyond the scream.
As always, I hope it helps!

Thank you @EmmaHubbard. I've found just what I was looking for. Since my little girl became three months old, her new favourite thing to do is wail and scream. She wants company, she doesn't like to be alone herself. Are there any tricks to help her learn how to play by herself as well? ❤

When was this? My daughter is 11 MO almost a year and she's never done that, she just calls me by name, probably because I taught her early on and worked with her on saying it, she's also really attached and clingy to me, she almost never calls her mother, I'm not sure why she wants me so much, but yeah she's not screamed at us to get what she wants, at least not yet, do they normally do it before or after 1?

That's very encouraging advice, because it's so hard. Thank you for the video! In practice I find this really challenging. With our one year olds, 90% of the time, it's really not so clear why they're screaming. So it's not just having to endure the screaming of two very loud toddlers, but simultaneously having to do guesswork in a stressful situation when all we (and the neighbors as well, probably) want is for them to stop screaming. At other times, it's not simply a communication issue, but eg. they don't want to sleep when it's bedtime, or they scream just when mealtime started, or they are tired but can't go to sleep etc. all of which aren't easy to navigate situations especially while they scream at 110 dB trying to protect our hearing and nerves.

Hi Emma - at what age is it appropriate to start following this advice? I have a 7 week old who sometimes cries until she is held. It doesn’t seem to be reflux. Wondering if and when we should curtail this? I keep hearing people say “you can’t spoil a newborn” so would love your perspective.
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 7 ай бұрын
In this newborn stage, I wouldn't recommend following this advice. It's more something I would start doing as a parent when the bub is 6 months of age (more just the naming of the item and using gestures before jumping to action). You don't have to pause long and it's going to be helpful to start it at that point, just so you get into the habit. In the newborn stage, they need your comfort and support. Also at 7 weeks, your baby would be hitting the peak of the Period of Purple Crying so that might explain why your little one is crying so much. Or it might be a few other reasons. In this video I go through the different reasons a newborn cries and what you can do to help them:kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioirgHl6hq2Ci6M I hope that helps.

Noise cancelling headphones? Your baby might get motion sick riding backwards in the car. Or just may want into your lap. Have you tried not sitting next to her? Maybe her not seeing you right next to get might calm her down because she doesn't see your lap right there. But sometimes, kids just want things they can't have and will cry as a result. My two year old went through a phase of being angry and crying because he wasn't allowed to hold his own hand to cross the street 🤷🏿‍♀️

Hello everyone! This is a mom of a 14 months old. My baby boy is all the time sticked to the breast may it be nighttime or daytime. The nights have been horrible since his birth. He would wake up 6-7 times now, take breast in his mouth (he would only use it as a pacifier and not suck milk) and then goes back to sleep. This thing has been ruining my health. I feel so lazy all the day because i can’t sleep at night. I want to wean him off. Now, a little background. He takes bottle also but only once or maybe twice a day. I have recently introduced him to tumbler and we are only drinking water with it until now. For food, Breakfast is an egg, Lunch is whatever i make for everyone else he eats with us and dinner is oats. In between breakfast and lunch he takes a full banana, sometimes with a bottle of milk or i offer the bottle later in the evening. Between lunch and dinner we do yoghurt or milkshake. Now, the sleep. I just put him to bed. But, i put vinegar on my breasts. He of course didn’t like it and then he cried his lungs out 😭 for about 35-40 minutes! I was also crying with him! Why is this so difficult? I have decided to not give breast at all as i am already low on supply as well. But, tell me if i am doing it wrong? Help me! I don’t want to just experiment with his sleep because he is crying a lot! i want to do something that i am 100% sure will work. We also have to travel by airplane in December so i want to be done with breastfeeding. Please guide me! I am feeling so empty, my baby has cried for so long!

I think you should go cold turkey. There’s also another video Emma did on pacifiers and since this seems more like he’s comforting himself rather than eating, treat this like a pacifier situation. Go cold turkey and even though it’s hard, don’t give in.

I'm so sorry to hear you've had such a hard time!! Sounds brutal! Remember that your baby loves you, and isn't purposefully trying to rob you of your sleep! It sounds like he is using you as a human pacifier for comfort. This same 6-7x a night behavior my sister experienced with her baby up until she was 3 years old. It was a "anxious behavior" in addition to difficulty with "self soothing" (it started when she went back to work, and worked long shifts erratically. Babies are programmed for survival, and to them, having the breast near means momma is near to comfort and keep them safe.) She tried everything!! But ended up just absolutely having to "stick to her guns and completely stop breast feeding by giving her an alternative. Having an alternative helps direct their soothing to somthing different. She didn't do this until the baby was almost 3!! In her case, a bottle of formula for the baby to drink on during the night... but this later caused dental problems with the bottle/milk in her mouth during sleep) I'd recommened the "Ninni Company" it's the most breast-like paci on the market and has done great with my baby in getting to sleep. It does pop out after a while, so eventually we were able to transition to another pacifier. I'd also recommend MORE PROTIEN like almond butter (not peanut since it's gassy and ferments in the gut) to keep his blood sugar stable at night. From what you listed on diet, there is low protien and low healthy fats. Add avacado, coconut oil, ect. If blood sugar drops at night, a baby will wake up panicky.

I would just STOP! And it's better if someone else is with him and you go to hotel for a night or 2! At this age they don't need your milk. My sister did it this way, and it worked. That's how I weaned off my son from pacifier and my daughter from the bottle, had enough, just stopped it took daughter 2 nights and my son around a week to forget. No stress for you or them! Just STOP , you got this ❤

I have 3mo twins, they're on the colicky phase, but the psicological one cause there's no pain involved (crying doesnt stop with medication but it doeswith movement or car rides for example). I wonder why do they cry and scream like this... it's been a long long month... they cry all day long... doctor say it's age appropiate... somedays they wake up middle of the night in terrified scream, eyes closed... won't stop until we do something that "wakes" them up (turning lights on, rubbing wet hand on face, etc.) I thought night terrors wasnt a thing on such young babies... is it? I'm super tired of all the screaming! What can I do¡? Does it ever stop? They'll be 4months november 9th.

Colic does tend to disappear between 12-16 weeks. If movement soothes them, may I suggest a baby carrier? A walk outside in the carrier is one of the few things that really soothes my baby (3m) if he's really worked up. Hang in there and best of luck to you. I'd also find a new pediatrician if he keeps dismissing constant crying as age appropriate behaviour.

Just something to consider, one of my twins ended up needing physiotherapy from poor positioning in the womb and some birth trauma. She was a bit squashed by her twin and her back was sore. I realised it when she managed to roll over and stopped crying. I don't know if it would help your twins, but it's worth mentioning as a possibility. Twins are so hard. My baby tries to communicate even if he is in the middle of a meltdown. He knows exactly what he wants and desperately shows it. But I can't give him that exact desired object. Here's an example: The other day babs was bawling because it was no other than I to lock the door as we were rushing to an event. And...he can't lock the door. It takes ages to do that, not without help anyway( What do I do to make him satisfied in such situations if I can't avoid him seeing me locking the door?

My 4 month old daughter started to use her voice to get my attention very early. Since Week 3, she screams before every single nap during the day. I am completely unable to put her down to sleep and she only sleeps on me, with me by her side or in the carrier. And even in my arms, she needs to scream at least 30 minutes before finally falling asleep. Once it is night, everything is fine. After bedtime routine, I am eventually able to transfer her to the crip and she only wakes up for 2-3 feeds and then quickly falls asleep on her own again. Any advice? 😢
@debaterforhim
@debaterforhim 7 ай бұрын
That is age appropriate behavior for her. They came from the womb where mommy was always with them. They are going to be terrified being on their own. I would say slowly transition them to their own crib. First, a bassinet beside you, then move the bassinet a little further away, then move them to their own crib. There is going to be adjustment. They won't care for it at first, but they will get used to it. Now my 23 month old son falls asleep on me but wants to be put in his crib after as he can't sleep in my arms for a long time. Also, try to enjoy this phase. Soon, they won't want to be held as much, and you will be wishing for the days they wanted to be in your arms...

Do you catch her tired queues in time? She might be getting over tired and they are usually much harder to get to sleep by then! Also my boy loved being held sideways in my arms, cradled, to fall asleep but my baby girl absolutely hates that position! She needs to be upright, her body against mine or husbands (she also only naps while in pushchair outside or carier too currently, 4 months) What also helps is singing her favourite song, or stand in the kitchen with the extractor fan on full blast! 😂

I have a book recommendation. It's called "precious little sleep" by Alexis Dubief. It's great because it talks about weaning babies from your situation and eventually transitioning them to the crib using lots of soothing tools to help, as well as different strategies you can try based on your parenting style as well as how desperate you are. I really wish you the best. I completely understand how difficult it can be with a needy baby. My first only ever took 30 minute naps and needed to be held a lot, but at night he slept great. (He sleeps so deeply we had to use a potty alarm to teach him to go to the bathroom at night 😅). My second likes naps but I have to keep her in a completely separate room (she is 4 months) because we wake wach other up all night. Getting enough rest for yourself is so amazing when it happens and I hope you get some rest soon! ❤
