I’ve starting mixing into a limiter every mix, and not just to “make it loud” before handing to a client. Learned the hard way that slamming on a limiter at the very end without giving it much thought can bite you in the butt after you sit with it. So I treat the limiter like the end of my mixbus chain (different ones depending on the material 🙃). Then all I’m doing is moving it a little to target LUFS/RMS before bounce so I can really hear any undesirable effects of that last move

Great tips Streaky. This sort of ties in with how to get a good crest factor when mixing. Not knowing this information, a lot of people would just smash the limiter without taking RMS into consideration. It's a good way to monitor what is too loud in your mix, like whether the snare is too loud, in relation to the kick when you monitor which aspects of your mix are triggering the limiter most.

What limiter settings do you recommend to use for mixing through? I imagine you want enough peak reduction and character to get a sense of how it will sound after it’s mastered, but transparent enough that it doesn’t change the sound more than it needs to?
@zwsh89
@zwsh89 2 жыл бұрын
So is the best approach to do an initial rough mix to get everything in the right ball park with relative volume and panning, and the true peak to -10, then set the limiter to get your mix up to match the reference, and mix through the limiter the rest of the time? That makes a ton of sense if so, this seems like such an obvious trick that no one talks about!

Great explanations, thank you for taking of your precious time to share your awesome knowledge, this is truly appreciated! I think that the person mixing must also use this methodology with care especially if he/she is not a professional, because that person finalizing the mix may realize that his bass distorts with his limiter when bringing the track at the same level as the reference track and he/she may decide to lower it until it stops to distort with his/her limiter, but he/she does not know that the fantastic mastering engineer 😁 will easily overcome this problem with low cuts as you perfectly explained in a previous video on your channel (titled "TRUTH ABOUT MASTERING EQ | Eq Tips for Mixing and Mastering") so that may end up with a mix not having its full potential with that bass, if lowered, since as we all know the bass frequencies are often the first to start distorting when using a limiter directly on a track without "preparing" that track for the usage of that limiter. Let me know if I'm a little right about this? 😁 Thank you again for the great tips, I wish you a fantastic day! 🌞 Best Regards from your friend François in Montreal, Canada! 🎼🃏🎶🎵🙏💯🌠

If you’re mixing into a limiter once you take that off won’t your mix fall apart? I’ve always been under the impression that you just need to turn down your reference tracks. I know if I mix into bus compression it doesn’t sound good when I turn it off. Maybe a limiter is different? But that would have to be a very transparent limiter.

(Ace Ventura inhale) 1.) you say 'balance' the mix - are you talking about just leveling the mix in the intial stages to see where you are at so, once you do add a limiter to see what it could sound like prior to any processing or, is this post all your processing but maintaining the -10db summing on the master/mixbus? anddd 2.) -10db - rule of thumb or, is this just preference cah - would -6db or even -4db do the same thing? Just a shorter distain to get to the RMS of the ref track? (second question might read dumb but F it lol) (Ace Ventura exhale) - Cheers Streaky

do pro mixers really mix into a limiter adding 10-15 db?
@wonkusshelvus5709
@wonkusshelvus5709 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I find spanking the limiter that hard to make it match a loud master at the beginning of a mix can be a bit punishing, you’ll be limiting the crap out of everything to get it to match level if it’s an aggressive master... for me it works better to back off the ref track, say -6db, in the early stages so you’re not having to drive the monitoring limiter so hard.... once you’ve tightened up your bottom end and peaky transients it’ll start to be easier to match the ref track level without it sounding like something’s dying! Quite often I don’t really engage in this process till a mix is pretty sorted out, and take a slightly distanced attitude to it, some limiters are quite brightening and can influence the way I eq the mix so it’s horses for courses. Pop the limiter in for a bit to reference and sense the vibe but don’t feel wedded to it all the time... some clients really need the level and limited sound in your mix versions to feel supported, others are studio musos themselves and respond better to an unlimited mix with more headroom. Check with them! Wicked tip though, and defo one to include in your workflow if you’re going for a commercial / competitive level ; ]
@paranoidjones
@paranoidjones 3 жыл бұрын
@@wonkusshelvus5709 Thanks- I do tend to mix into Pro-L, but its usually adding a bit more like 3-5 db- I have a lot of plugins on the mix bus adding a little level at a time, and sometimes with aggressive music, if I take only the limiter off I'll get occasional peaks close to or above zero, so I'll adjust or take some of those other plugs off when i export the non-limited mix so that the mastering stage has at least 4db of headroom. Have never heard of -10 peak level as a standard to send to mastering. Do you think this results in a louder master?
