Reason I play 5th edition is because of the network effect: There is a dnd group, most of those play 5th edition, thus, if I want a group, I play 5th edition. Now I am specialised in 5th edition, and thus have a barrier to playing a different system

Renaming monsters is usually more confusing for me as a DM. With so much to keep track of, having to remind myself that the goblin in the encounter is actually a "Zugtomoi" every time I mention it can quickly become annoying. I challenge other DM's to try it out just to see how often you catch yourself forgetting the name mid combat.
@anonymoose69038 ай бұрын
I thought Zuggtmoy was pretty well known. Isn't she one of the main villains in Temple of Elemental Evil? Maybe I'm too much of a ad&d nerd to get the bit.

Last system I played and run was 5e. Been looking at 2e, basic fantasy, whie box, cairn, shadowdark, etc
@rafibausk70718 ай бұрын
I personally swapped to aD&D 2e right around the time of the OGL crisis. Though I think I actually did it a little bit before. I personally prefer the more complex rules. I think one thing that might help your choice. Is that you should ask yourself. Do you prefer more narrative based gameplay (in another words that you view the game as a method to tell a specific story) story first game second. Then I would recommend rules light systems. Basic fantasy, BECMI, and white box for example. Or do you prefer emergent gameplay. (Where the story is created by the play of the game) kind of like how people create stories around events in a game of Minecraft. Game first and the story emerges from playing the game. Then I might suggest a more rules heavy systems. aD&D 1&2e, 3.5, & Pathfinder. Anyway that's just my suggestion.

I love the title of this vid. I was thinking - I'm not even sure how much the 2024 Player's Handbook is going to cost! I am still not sure it will show up on September.

Why would I? I've already got Symbaroum, Coriolis, Blade Runner, Forbidden Lands aaaannnd Pathfinder. True TTRPGs made by small companies passionate about what they do, not some corporate cash-grab to enrich the pockets of shareholders. Thank you.

I think homebrewability it’s more dependent on your group. Beyond that I think that rules light systems are the easiest to adapt to your needs. Like early basic D&D. When your players are dumping 50 bucks on a players handbook and another $50-$100 on supplement books to give them new tricks and abilities. I find it hard to talk them into unless it meets or exceed the official content. But the very best way of Home brewing I found is the play a bunch of different games Systems. A lot of games have free starter rules and come with adventures. If a player can’t make a session, but everybody still wants to play I have a one shot. And test out a new system.

I'm from the time machine of AD&D and have suddenly woken up from my spell. D&D now feels like a video game with superheroes and not risk. What is needed is more on the monster and encounter side of things. I do not mean new monsters in any way. I mean smarter monsters, more tactics, more environment that matters. I mean better mechanics for monsters staying alive and tracking recurring monsters that now have a grudge and learned from their mistakes. I am talking about monsters that improvise traps from crossbows. I'm talking about things like having mounts, and horses and less focus on depending on magical items and reliance on magic. It needs a step away from high fantasy and having a magical gimmick for everything. Level progression based on the skills you used, not just some skills dropping down on Tuesday when you didn't know about them on Monday. At certain levels, characters are invulnerable to kobolds and they are trivial. That shouldn't be. Kobolds are vicious and capable of metting out death. Kobolds wish to survive too, as well as gain power. Mounted combat needs to be fleshed out. There are some things obviously missing and some things that are far too overdone.

I love of how dm improving on the dnd combat is not by using the official source material and it is improved by using suggestion other people gotten out not from the book. I agree with your take.

every edition is easy to homebrew. I Love every edition except 4th, but AD&D was the easiest to create/homebrew for.

one thing that always gets me about saying "5e is the easiest DND version to play" there are still people who get confused about DnD 5e's rules. so they are absolutely going to dumb down the rules even more
@williamsantosii22118 ай бұрын
I play 5e currently because I can readily teach players faster and provide them with tools online. Otherwise, I have a boatload of resources for 3.5e which I find easier to homebrew. I've even been able to use 3.5e to have a 0th level game, I was able to start a 3.5e game to d20 Modern which had magic and elves on present day Earth. I even managed to run a time travel game all on the 3.5e framework. 5e is too simplified for me to do that in my view.

Good video, thank you! I'm really struggling with how much the term homebrew is being used in this video to describe what to me is the default form of play: adventures and campaigns made organically by the GM while playing with their group. I think the word homebrew is being overused recently. What you are calling a "Homebrew campaign" should be referred to as a "campaign." Something published by WOTC should be referred to as a a "pre-made campaign" or "published campaign". Hot take: D&D needs to get back to creativity as the default.

In contrast to what you have said and to continue to use your analogy. Why not start over and throw it all away its not like they hadn't done it before. Why not see new roads and make the bike new too cause the "what" you are doing is still the ride. In non analgous language, the ride is dnd, and every past edition threw out and built upon what came before your new area to ride in is the new unexplored edition. In short, why not 6th drastic change can be good, and throwing out the old can lead to new interesting stuff, why just revise. This is an opinion I do have but also used more to play Devil's Advocate. Enjoyed the video, keep up the good work dude!
