Every transportation job has risk and you can’t be scare of the “what if” clause. My company has installed dash cams that face both the driver and outside the truck. One of our employees was involved in a wreck that caused serious damage to the truck, car, and injury. State troopers was ready to arrest the truck driver on the spot until they reviewed the camera-which clearly showed that the driver of the car purposely ran into the truck. Protecting yourself at all times is the key.

All the truck drivers I know live paycheck to paycheck. I know a few of them that lost their jobs due to inability to pass the medical examination due to older age health issues. In my opinion trucking doesn't pay enough to the driver. And to top it off the driver's take on all of the liability.

Trucking has really went down hill, here are the faults I see Today: Distracted Drivers Wage Theft Being Stranded Company Equipment Neglect No Benefits Horrible Brokers Horrible Dispatch Uneducated Owners No Detention Pay But, they want you to pass all inspections, keep your PSP Clean, run illegal so they afford their Egos and drive vehicles that cost more than the truck your driving. It's becoming a big joke these days, so many new factors taking place that you didn't see in 80s-90s....I'm very close to pursuing another career at 51

Harry Balls, I'm only 29 and I've been around trucks my entire life, driving for 2 years legally (hauled grain as a teenager) and I'm honestly thinking of calling it quits. I love driving, by the rules and regs are insane anymore, the trucks are electronic garbage, the pay is shit (even for me as a local driver) the 4 wheeler's stay on their phones 24/7, the company I'm with doesn't seem to want to fix mechanical problems with the truck, but they still expect me to run (of course becasue it's my ass and not theirs if I get popped by DOT,) (no other decent jobs locally at the moment) etc, etc. Just seems like too much of a risk anymore. It's sad but with the way things are at my current place of employment, not to mention the moronic 4 wheelers I see daily, I honestly feel like every day that I get behind that steering wheel, it's a gamble.

Im cool with 75-100 a yr shit in my own bed sleep in my own toilet everyday lol daycab sucks but fuckit never did otr anyway ever. No knockin it either but that aint my cup a tea. We are all truckers reguardless if u are a bullhauler with a long hood pete with chicken lights doin 85mph or the company guy in cascadia daycab pullin doubles in governed out at 65mph. Most trucks in the UK now have a built in dash cam. Some even have one facing the driver, which I don’t like, but I guess in a collision it can be viewed to show you weren’t on your phone or looking at your feet or whatever

Your video comes right at the time that I have been evaluating my driving job. In my situation, I drive a concrete mixer truck (drove over the road for about two years and got out) and my responsibilities include running and maintaining the plant, truck, loaders, and paperwork too. I am a one man show. I have said something to the safety department to no avail. Management only cares about the bottom line, not the personnel. I have a hard decision to make as to whether keeping my CDL is really worth it any more. I drive super careful, maintain safe following distances, but being overwhelmed is putting me at risk... Just been very lucky so far...

Use to have a chauffeur license, decided to get my CDL in 94, hauled coal, logs, veneer logs into Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Carolina, from West Virginia. After all this time ( Nothin to really show for it) I didn't renew my CDL, I was offered a mechanics job years back with Pen Central railway as a mechanic, (went to Max S Hayes vocational school Cleveland Ohio three years, as a diesel and truck mechanic, if I could turn back time I'd of took that mechanic job with Pen Central railway's !!! Other than not staying in the Air Force, choosing trucks over that railroad job offer was the biggest, dumbass mistake of my life !!! I met a guy who worked for John Christianson Trucking that was involved with someone who tried to pull an auto insurance scam by driving into a blind spot and causing an accident. The Trucker was let off the charges because he had 6 cameras on his truck that also showed the blind spots.. He still drives for JCT today,

Do some research on What happened to a friend of mine named Vernon. He was t boned in the fog in Stanley North Dakota in 2014 if I remember hauling crude oil. 3 other pick ups and a hot oil truck collided in the whole wreck. They didn't arrest him at the secene but they extradited him from GA right before Christmas to North Dakota. He spent some time in jail. Then was bailed then spent a few years in courts. They charged him with 3 counts of vehicular homicide. Several years later he was found not guilty. But it was expensive in the end and probably caused him more grief then anything in his life. Nothing is more of a wake up call about driving then watching a friend get a mug shoot on the news and hearing them say he is facing 15 years of federal time.

The Bakken is, or at least was, one of the scariest places to be on the road. I was hauling crude at the time of that accident, living in a rental in Stanley for a crazy price. It happened just east of Stanley and burned for nearly three days. 300 feet of road was literally melted away, I mean totally gone. I drove for another 18 months and got out while I was still ahead. Your friend was put through nothing short of a living hell. I wish him the best.

I remember driving for the army in Korea, some local nationals were known to aim for army trucks, because it didn’t matter if they were at fault, the way their traffic law works, we are always responsible. Something along the lines of “if the foreigners weren’t here the accident wouldn’t have happened”.

I was a Trucker from 2005 until 2014. On Oct. 2014, I was driving on the Right lane of a 4 lane County High Way in Bexar County at San Antonio, Texas, with a man made Meridian constructed center and nearing an intersection about 2 blocks away that I needed to change to the Left lane and prepare for another intersection up ahead about 2 blocks away as well and turn left unto a major High Way. I looked at my Driver side mirror for clearance, I determined it was clear enough for a left signal light. I looked again, it was clear and I made my move to the left lane. I then heard an auto horn. I looked in the driver side mirror and, to my horror, I saw a small truck on the left side of the outside of the left lane. With only about 2 ft. of the small trucks width on the Meridian. I safely and quickly parked my Truck just in front of the victim's small truck. I went to their aid. I saw only one middle-aged female driver. I asked if she was alright, she yelled and cursed me out. I quickly surmised she was alright, no blood, no obvious injury. I quickly scanned her small truck, no damage. I left to my Truck to park it at a safer place on the Right lane just up ahead on the other side of the intersection. I called 911, as it happened, within 15 minutes, a Police Vehicle with 2 Police, passed on the right lane near my driver side window. I got their attention and let them know about the lady over there. They told me to stay where I was at and, they quickly made a turn-around. EMS arrived shortly there afterwards, about 40 minutes later, the Police came to me and stated that since I called Authorities, that since I did not leave the scene, that since the victim's truck was not damaged or, did not wind up in a ditch and had to be towed out, that by the cursive examination of EMS and determined there was no obvious or significant injuries, like bleeding; I was free to leave. At the time, I had not had a Traffic Citation in 12 years and I now still have a clear Traffic Citation History. That is probably one of the reasons the Police let me go and did not issue me a Traffic Citation. I never heard of this incident again until May 21, 2018. I have been informed by an Attorney Letter representing the Trucking Co. I used to work for, that I am a defendant in a new lawsuit for that same incident, claiming that I moved into her lane, causing her to drive off the road into a ditch. That is all I know so far. So, yeah, the warning is agonizingly true.

James Schrader I’ve only ever done local over in chicago in elk grove. They lowest starting pay is over a pronto for $16 an hr!!!! For a semi that it is ridiculous!! And other company’s pay around 18-20hr depending on experience. Non the less it’s shit pay. Long hours if you want to make any kind of money. If drivecam footage shows a 4 wheeler causing an accident from the “swoop & squat “ trick they’ll be charged and prosecuted. This happened in my state several years ago. A ring of these scammers were prosecuted and convicted based on trucker drive cams. I wouldn’t drive without one. Drive cam is your friend, not your enemy. I can’t imagine a driver complaining about their company having drive cams in them. Drive cam footage may save your ass because the company sure ain’t going to.

Well really , ,any jobs are worst but ,my point is that diesel mechanics jobs are shameful low paid work Every company I drove for cut out overtime pay for the mechanics many getting paid 10 dollars an hour some after indebted themselves in diesel mechanic schools for 12 to 30 thousand dollars diesel schools is a racket for sure. THE shop supervisor only made $19. 50 an hour . This was back in 2004 . THE TIRE GUY made good money about 17 an hour but the mechanic , pitiful.

If they are guilty, they should pay the price. I do think what you are talking about is true for all drivers. Trucker, lawyer, doctor, clerk, everybody. Distracted driving kills. As for me, I do not use a phone while driving. Period. Easy to show police no activity. Insurance fraud is not new. I carry way over minimum insurance, and a separate umbrella policy just in case. But, you cannot live your life afraid. Be careful, drive correctly, and go for it. Truck driver, doctor, or God forbid, a teenager. If you drive, then this could happen to you. I’m just getting into trucking because I can no longer find work in the industry I’ve work in the last 30 years because of my age. I agree with your sentiment about the risk reward factor. I do believe that the pendulum is swinging in the right direction now and truck drivers are finally getting paid more, but it still has a long way to go to truly compensate drivers justly and adequately for the risk they take every day. I am very concerned about all the 4 wheelers on the road and the way they act and drive, but I have committed myself to this industry now. You really should consider something related to what you were doing. I've been in this racket of hustling frieght with a Class A(on and off) for 22 years. I've even been a fancy motor coach operator. I left the buses, thinking I'd get more stability with work loads. Well, that was a false premise too. Be prepared for a revolving door as far as your job situation. Trucking turnover is well over 80%, especially in OTR. Today, I would never consider and OTR position. I did a .46/mi. gig doing oversized flatbed work in 2016, I thought I'd be living on cat food. Forget it man, you will thank me later.

If you are "slow and methodical" with a company, you will be unemployed. The COMPANY will set your speed and route for you (the real reason for E-Logs) and the shipper will (usually but not always) do everything they can to screw that schedule up. This is the Trucker's Paradox....

I earned a grand total of $24K in one year! That was it for me. I will call them out (Watkins SHEPARD). I tried all mgmt channels just about every month. Dispatchers were clueless, and really felt like they were powerful. If that is just one company, odds are, there are many more out there. Just an FYI, Schneider took over about 6 months into my one year. Was broke down in North Dakota around the wastelands area, and it was around 11 or so at night. The weather was quoting 52 below zero wind chill. I was thinking I was on the moon being from Florida. I called Schneider breakdown, and they said it would be a few hours. I told them I found a mechanic about one hour out. Then he got angry by saying how about letting me do my job, and you do yours. So I hung up and called the one hour guy, and he changed two tires and repaired two air hoses. I told him that he needed to obtain billing authorization, but he said he knew all about Schneider, and he would rather do it for free, as he used to be a driver himself. Hell of a man, and I owe him dearly for his kindness. My two cents to new drivers, be very careful on carrier selection. I just wanted the one year, just in case I had to fall back on the cdl for survival purposes. As of today, no way in hell I would get in that cab, unless a driver can earn a minimum of $50K in the first year, and better benefits. I can understand the arguments that you see some pretty scary low life creeps out there, and they are more dangerous than a full blown libtard after strong coffee, and who would pay them the $50K right? Well, the carriers hire just that (mostly), because they are a dime a dozen, and most are on contracts. It’s all a scam for today’s new driver. I have over 20 years in management, and the other reason I took to driving, was so that I could learn, as I enjoy logistics, and thought about starting a business. Every time I would hear the money complaints from primarily owner ops, I would tell them that it’s THEIR fault for allowing it. I know that may come across as too tough, but it’s the truth. Good and true info. Some points for new drivers: there's a trucking shortage so there's a ton of freight. Don't speed, of course we all speed but going by odds the odds are the more you stay close to the limit the better. Stay in your lane and expect anything from any driver on the road. Mentally go thru the physical motions whether you throw the jbrake on or quick downshift, just dont swerve abruptly. Utilize your hazard and brake lights to communicate also marker lights. Add extra following distance especially if you're in the far left or right lane there can always be a car on the side of the road with people outside of it and you can't see them if you're too close to a truck in front. Retrain your brain to cruise.. Its not a car and it's not a race. Definitely get a dash cam.

Absolutely fantastic video. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I'm only 2 years into what I thought was going to be my new career, but I'm seriously having large bouts of apprehension. I love driving and had hopes of being an O/O one day (yea right, not these days) I'm seeing so many things on a daily basis, not to mention big brother and their ridiculous rules and regs, HOS, shitty companies like mine who don't fix mechanical issues even though it's my ass on the line when they say "take the load or go home" as if I can just go home and not make money. I have a family to provide for and I get blackmailed daily to run when the truck isn't in proper working condition, and in the end, if something DID happen, it would be my ass. But hey, who cares right? As long as the load gets there. Unfortunately, even though my local driving gig doesn't pay great for the risks I take daily, I can't even find anything in my area that pays close to what driving does without a college degree.

Retired from trucking after 20+ years on the road. Owner operator and company driver during those years of driving. I started in October of 1990. Advice worth its weight in gold. I never owned anything or had anything in my name. LLC while in business as an owner operator can protect you. As a company driver we never put anything in my name. This was advice from a lawyer and I took it to the bank. You are a target , a big payday rolling in and out of different states every day with different laws. Knowing how to protect your assets and you as the living person will get you through your career as a professional driver. The pay has never been what it should be but somehow I made a good living and raised a family on trucking. Can't really complain about it. Good luck and hope this little bit of advice helps. It sure saved my ass more than once.

my trainer told me to let people merging onto highway "figure it out for themselves" instead of switching lanes when I had clear openings. I made the mistake of listening to him instead of following my own instincts. Fast forward a few hours and we are in a construction zone with the short curvy entrance ramps. I was listening to my trainers advice all day and it had worked so far should work again right? No, Dumbass in an impala with his whole family on board doesn't even check his mirrors or turn his head and I had to take hard evasive action into lane left of me. If it had been snowing or icy I would have lost control. Luckily I constantly check my mirrors even before I started trucking so I knew I had room to do so. I drove the 11 hours back the next morning from beullaville NC to Cincinatti, Quit the next day and haven't been back. Back to turning wrenches now where at least it will only be me who gets crushed by a car if the lift fails or a bad rack. Not enough money for sure for the risk. You will get sued, they will blame it on you, you will be fired, you might go to jail. Meanwhile everyone after 10 pm is intoxicated driving 4 wheelers, There are people doing 100mph in heavy traffic switching lanes, 15yr olds doing dumb shit with their permits. And they don't teach normal drivers how to drive around commercial vehicles. Big companies text me every day "you can make 86,000 dollars a year". Anyone who drives a truck for a living should be making double that and you have my lifelong respect.

Majority of all trucking companies are self-insured LLC. And 8 out of 10 times the trucking company well throw the driver under the bus. Insurance Company rules the industry if you can't get insurance coverage for a driver the driver cannot work. And if the trucking company is large enough to be self-insured you can bet that if you get into an accident they will throw that driver under the bus and turn him loose to fend for himself. Doesn't matter if you're a rocky or a seasoned experience driver they will throw you under the bus. The only thing trucking companies know is revenue. Making money is the only thing they understand.

I don’t think that’s a valid argument, anyone, driving any vehicle can and will be charged the same way. You could work at Home Depot, and kill someone on your way to work. If you do, you will be charged. Truck drivers are expected to be “professional drivers”. This means that we are expected to be better drives than everyone else on the road, we are to be more alert, and more attentive. There is no electronic log, that is going to make you be less of a professional, just a bad attitude. By having your own dash cam (which you can get a free app for on your smart phone), you are protecting yourself. Let’s try being better drivers, better employees and better role models for the people who don’t drive professionally. We know they aren’t educated about the rigs we drive. Buck up, and move on.

This was my very first question years ago when they started with the qualcomms. And should be a bigger question now. Basically you as the driver. Are you not being distracted watching a clock. Driving against a clock. Or maybe your driving and there is a message sent to your qualcomm. And between when you hear you have a qualcom message and stop to read it you ram into the back of a car. I'll bet you could easily be cited or latter sued as distracted. So I think some real solid laws would have to be put down so the driver isn't put into jeopardy. Which of course there's not. And this will like everything today will become a bigger headache for the driver. And higher trucking insurance.

ELD enforces that you take the 10 hr rest, how is that going to make you or anyone drive tired? unless you are doing something when you should be resting, no it doesn't cause you to drive tired. i use company ELD's everyday, and trust me, its a nightmare. It could cause you to drive more stressed, but not tired. Stress comes in from dealing with traffic, idiots, phone accidents on 4 wheeler, and not finding parking or trying to get somewhere when you are close on your hrs because that's the closest safe heaven, or loading/unloading empties your clock and they wont let you stay there for the night. Then again, THAT IS YOUR CHOICE, plan ahead. Loading/Unloading you cant predict unless you have been there before, but if you know traffic is bad ahead, or you know it frequently gets that bad, unless you have enough time to go through, call it quits. BTW. Pro tip, log it as it is on the ELD. You have no idea how much time is wasted on drive time which cant be edited if you forget to go off duty, or on duty. #minutescount

A good living now, in the United States, is approximately 130,000 a year. This is just considered a mid-middle income, not upper middle income. A Class A Tractor Trailer Driver today should, after 4 years with little or no accident or crash history, be in the upper middle income grouping, due to the risk involved in the occupation and the technical skilled aspect of the license. An upper middle class income today begins at 145,000 a year. This is what a 4+ year Class A CDL Driver should be paid.

YEP! I was in New York City (Astoria) and a car eased up next to me, kept getting closer and closer to my left side trailer tandoms. Then all of a sudden the car TURNED HARD into my trailer, smashed their front right quarter panel and knocked off the mirror. LUCKILY I had a rear facing camera and I showed it to the cop on the spot. That GIRL in the car was arrested and charged. I made my statement and gave the cop a copy of the video on a spare USB drive --- But I never followed up on what happened to the driver. They never contacted me. I didn't claim any damage -- you couldn't even find a scratch.
