I don’t see anyone talking about the cicada imagery at the end. If this girl was going to prom… she was likely 17, somewhere in that range. Cicadas only live for about 17 years. They hatch from an egg, burrow underground, and live there for about 17 years. Only after that amount of time do they become mature enough to mate and fertilize or lay eggs, after about two weeks of which they die. Marie was the earth that Gloria burrowed into, only to emerge from inside her after 17 years. Now I wonder how long she’ll get away with being Marie

I am ADHD autistic (born that way) and have acquired mental illness as an adult (PTSD / social anxiety). I found that adopting a dog helps me function as a developmentally disabled adult. My brain can't do internal motivation and executive functioning because of the lesions on my prefrontal cortex and atypical dopamine, but the external motivation of having a dog to take care of helps me keep a daily schedule. I read about someone with schizophrenia who had a service dog who would respond to sounds. If the person heard a noise and the dog didn't respond, the person knew it was an auditory hallucination. Support from others, human or animal, is a great way to navigate life as a disabled / neurodivergent / mentally ill person. Trying to do it alone leads to burnout (in my experience).

I like that Shane mentioned some people do not have an audible inner voice, I'm a part of that percentage of the population and the term for it is Anauralia. I also have Aphantasia, which is the inability to create mental images, so when someone asks something like: "Can you imagine...," it's impossible for me to do so. I always thought questions of the sort were metaphorical and didn't know others expected me to actually create a vivid mental image. When I close my eyes there is only darkness, and I am unable to hear my voice narrating my thoughts. Thoughts just appear in my mind and all I do is comprehend them.
@TheGuindo
@TheGuindo Жыл бұрын
i'm very curious, if you don't have mental images OR an internal voice, what form do your thoughts take?
@Redsby
@Redsby Жыл бұрын
@@TheGuindo The easiest way to explain the thought process, without getting too abstract, would be that my mind instinctually thinks words without the assistance of any of the senses. Thoughts for me don't take any form, they come and go in the moment. Think of it like this: when you are speaking to someone face-to-face, you hear their words but you don't physically see the words leave their mouth like subtitles since the sound of speech, for the most part, doesn't have a physical form. It's an auditory experience that your brain processes and comprehends automatically. My brain simply thinks of words, processes them, and comprehends their meaning the same as anyone else's (without all the senses interfering). I'm sorry if this is confusing but it is a tricky topic to explain.
@TheGuindo
@TheGuindo Жыл бұрын
@@Redsby hmmm i'm not sure i understand correctly because that doesn't sound that different from how my own inner monologue works. i definitely have an inner voice that feels like me talking to myself inside my head, but it doesn't really have any sound associated with it. like, i _can_ imagine a specific sound to it if i focus on giving it one, but by default it doesn't sound like anything. my roommate has aphantasia and has described the way he dreams as "dreaming in concepts instead of pictures", and i guess it's a little like that? it's the _concept_ of a voice without the _sound_ of a voice.
@Redsby
@Redsby Жыл бұрын
@@TheGuindo Yes, I agree. My thoughts don't have an audible inner voice attached to them but I do conceptualize a "voice" for them, and as you said, by default there is no sound. Also, I relate to what your roommate explained about aphantasia, except, for myself, I'm able to dream with a visual sense to some degree but my ability to do that is very weak. However, when awake and conscious I'm unable to create that same mental imagery. Aphantasia is a spectrum and is different for each person who has it.

Instead, Gloria speaks and explains it was a weird freak out and goes to live the rest of her life as Marie, with Marie being the voice in her head. Or it ends like how Shane suggested.

The alchemy of the human experience is that we are more than the sum of our parts. It is also very, very important for mental health to not convict ourselves of "thought crimes," especially when dealing with symptoms outside of our personal control, like intrusive thoughts, negative impulses, hallucinations and delusions, etc. Intrusive thoughts, specifically, tend to be what a person considers most horrifying, distressing, taboo... As someone with OCD, I had to learn to separate who I am from the mental static or I would have died. An 8/10 tale! Loved the story until the end. I really thought this was gunna be purely medical; was hoping they would find a brain mass. Something causing her to hallucinate her subliminal (unnecessary but common) guilt for being the surviving twin. As she was privy to the info about her twin before she first heard the voice, she would have been under 6 finding out something rather hard to process? As the mass grew, it caused symptoms of a skitzo-spectrum disorder to grow over time; this increase causing paranoia and aggression eventually. Really thought this would be the route, and that she'd have the tumor removed and start living a normal life with some minor ptsd until one day in her elderly dimension, the tumor came back and the voice came back. Idk why I rewrote this whole thing in my mind. I'm sorry. Love yalls commentary just the same! I hope next seasons stories are just a little deeper/less shock factor than cicada milk cocoon and date night spaghetti boyfriend pile.

I think this is one of my favorite stories that I've heard on this show honestly. This was super good

Okay, I'm currently in the middle of the story, but if it were me, I'd least give in to some of the whims of the twin I absorbed. We could come into a compromise, that the two of us could control the body on set schedules, like a day for each or a set time to switch. I think I would've been happy in Marie's situation. Especially if the other on is a deligent person. it's probably like a different personality

It is, I can confirm. I feel Gloria here. Do you know how disconcerting it is when a stranger you don't even like starts trying to kiss you under the impression you're their SO? Obviously you don't want that
@WoozyCool
@WoozyCool Жыл бұрын
I mean, it wouldn't have killed Marie to eat that Strawberry Sorbet from time to time, do bunch of other stuff too, own extra clothing which her twin prefers, have hobbies which her twin prefers, etc. She was quite selfish, especially when she said something like, you're just a voice in my head, go away.

not if they just started hijacking my body without permission. If gloria had simply asked marie then she probably would bite, literally

I agree, I would've probably told Gloria: “I can give in to what you want from time to time if you ask for it, but just don't hijack my body”.
@ritter286

I honestly don't blame Marie at all. Having grown up with this voice in her head, it's logical to not think it has any solid connection to the outside world, like taste. She even says that Gloria is "just a voice". Children can't even begin to comprehend such an abstract concept such as sharing a body with another sentient "entity". I don't know how old she was when the sorbet thing happened, but she had obviously been controlling her own body for years when all the sudden she couldn't. It would definitely freak me out and I would absolutely deny any control for Gloria, especially as a child that is likely (as it's natural) struggling to find any sort of control/autonomy as is

I would like to clarify that the thing about one twin absorbing the other one in the womb isn’t actually how the vanishing twin syndrome work. Sometimes during pregnancy a twin dies and they either get reabsorb by the mothers body or get… flattened in there. There’s also the chimera syndrome but that is a completely different and rarer thing where the twins absorbed each other. Either way for anyone that had a vanishing twin… no you did not actually eat your sibling while in the womb (baby sharks do that tho).

Did they know the sex of your twin fetus on the first appointment? I've never heard of a resorption happening late enough to be able to tell what genitalia the fetus had. I'm curious because the mother in the story apparently knew she was having 2 girls.

I think the people saying that they don't experience a running "voice" in their head are just interpreting the situation differently. Similar to how some people say they can think of an "apple" and then envision a perfect-looking apple in their "mind's eye," while others say they can't do that. I think everyone's actually pretty similar in these regards, but we interpret it differently, and/or just use different words to describe the same sensation. Because I would say that I have a running voice in my head, but if you were to press me on it, I certainly wouldn't describe it as an *actual* voice that I'm "hearing," it's simply my thoughts that are running through my mind sometimes (sometimes constantly, and other times, it's pretty "quiet"). I would also say that I can conjure up an apple in my mind's eye, but if you pressed me on it, I wouldn't say that I'm literally *seeing* an apple. I'm just thinking of one, and I know what they look like, so it just kinda *feels* like I can see it, because I can envision it pretty clearly. When I simply think of an apple, it's not like my eyes are even doing anything - it's all just in my head. Similar to the voice - my ears aren't *hearing* anything at all. It all just depends on how you describe it.

the alternative to having an active voice in my head is constantly having a song playing in my head. like, if i don't think about anything in particular, all i get is "...take me on, i'll be gone in a day or tWOOOO...." i can make my thoughts say something if i want them to, and as i type this i am saying the words inside my head in my own voice to hear how they sound aloud, but my brain doesn't really have a running dialogue with me. just a playlist it lovingly curated for me. i also don't easily see pictures in my head unless i am on the verge of sleep. if someone asks me what someone looks like, i can bring up a picture, but if you asked me to picture an apple in my head, all i get is a super swirly, fuzzy picture with a grey film over it. i think this is why certain memory tricks don't work for me. like a common one is imagining you're in a house and the things you have to remember are around the house and you can just walk through and look at them. bitch i can't even imagine a house lol
