Are You Scottish Enough to Wear the Kilt? Is it offensive for non-Scots to wear kilts?

We like to say that tartan and kilts are "Scotland's gift to the world."
And we stand by the idea that anyone can wear the kilt if they choose to. Our mantra is simple - "be a sincere student of the culture."
However, it is clear that many men feel nervous about wearing the kilt for the first time, or at all, because they worry they are not entitled to wear it. Alternately, they may feel entitled thanks to their ancestry, but are terrified of "doing it wrong" and being thought a fool or poseur.
How do you overcome these mental hobgoblins? The answer will vary from person to person, but Rocky gives his personal take on the problem. Bottom line - there is no reason you should not wear the kilt if you want to!

Tapa leat, mo charaidan Alban! (Yes, I know most Scots don't speak the Gaidhlig, but my wife and I are learning to speak it). I've been kilting up for about 2 years now and have never had a negative comment from the public, even here in Oklahoma! The secret is to wear it like you mean it, like you are the only person there who is properly dressed whether it's a formal event in a P.C. or ultra casual in a T-shirt and combat boots. We even have a friend of German decent (we try not to hold it against him) wearing a kilt occasionally! My response to those who sometimes ask "Why the kilt?" is usually"If you had ever worn one, you would know" LOL

@@Arthurian. you do realize neither dreads and braids is directly a African oriented things. Dreads is a natural process of hair on human and animal alike. Pretty much all cultures in history had dreads and braided hair. Greeks,vikings,caveman, scottish,etc. Dreads only seen as a black thing is cuz bob Marley and reggae artists in the 70s. Also on the things on kilts. Again every one wore skirts,togas,etc. Pants and legged garments wasn't a thing in a big part of human history. So all around none of these things are one race,nationality etc. So we shouldn't be pressured to not enjoy.

Jeriel I agree. My wife mentioned one day, "let's buy you a kilt". And it was something I never even considered before. It wasn't that I came to a decision before to not buy a kilt, just it never even crossed my mind to buy/wear one. So we got one and I wore it around that day and it was amazing. Just so extremely comfortable. I bought 3 more since then so that I could rotate them. I had tried to look up what do Scots think about non-Scots wearing them and all signs point to: as long as you are respecting it, they really don't care. Just don't go using it as a Halloween consume.

I'll throw something else into the mix. In Scotland, most people take the attitude that if you want to be Scottish, and make a life for your family in Scotland, you're welcome. Doesn't matter your colour, religion or where you come from. If you love Scotland, you're Scottish. If you love the culture and want to wear the kilt with pride, go for it. After all, "we're aw Jock Tampson's Bairns" 👍

As a Scot I concur with these lads, I love seeing people from other countries embrace the culture and history. Whether you have Scottish heritage or not, from any background, enjoy yourself above all. It's always fun to meet tourists and chat to them about their interests in the country and everything that goes with it. And remember, if you do come across some arsehole who has issues with you not being "Scottish enough" then remember the most Scottish thing to do is disregard their opinion (as most Scots don't like them either) and have a nip of whisky in commissary for their lack of brain. I live in Canada and have Scottish heritage and had several uncles that were pipers and my Grandfather was a drummer in a pipe band . I only wear kilts now and it is with your approval and others like you that I once gave an Asian person who approached me to compliment my kilt that he should get one . I could tell he really wanted to lean into the whole kilt thing so I told him that a person doesn't have to be Scottish to wear a kilt , just wear it with respect to the culture ...which I could tell he would do . I would not have given that advice without people like you so thank you . PS . It makes me feel good wearing kilts with your approval as well !

I recently heard a radio interview with an African who grew up wearing traditional garb. He was asked about 'cultural appropriation' and whether or not whites should wear traditional garments. His response was very telling. He said "We consider it the highest form of respect that others admire our culture enough to wish to observe our customs and dress as we do. How could we take offense? " BTW, this was said in very proper English - should we be offended because he is 'appropriating' our language? Or should we praise his dedication for learning another culture's (very difficult) speech?

@@davidstone1227 I just spent a month in South America... Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru... I asked a few people I made friends with along the way about "Cultural appropriation and none of them even could understand the concept. They are happy to share their culture to anyone who is respectful. And you're right, I spent a lot of time learning Spanish and they are are thrilled that a white American guy took the time to partake in their culture on such a deep level. I also saw a Colombian man on the street playing the Highland Bagpipes... He was the worst piper I had ever heard but he really made my day. I was happy that he "appropriated" my culture. haha

Just had surgery that prevented me from dressing myself, so I had some wrap skirts made with hook and loop attachments and converted a pair of shorts into tearaways with a zipper on the side. Now I'm diving into the kilt world rabbit hole, and can't wait to embrace the enlightenment of my new identity as a free-spirit and loosey goosey resistance fighter. ✊🏾

​@@JeffOfTheMountainsthere's a registry 802 in the Scottish Registry of Tartans that is the oldest attested record of a specific Stewart/Stuart of Atholl tartan. The first ever Stewart of Atholl probably wore some variant of Bruce tartan, being the official successor and all that.

@@JeffOfTheMountains well, after the death of Robert the Bruce, the king of Scotland was his son David, but he didn't have any legitimate heirs, so Robert the Stewart, son of Robert Bruce's eldest daughter Marjorie Bruce, became Robert II the Stewart, king of Scotland. His eldest son, also Robert, inherited his home and main fiefdoms in Atholl, and that's where the line of Stewarts of Atholl comes from (but the legitimate ancestry line of the clan was pretty soon broken).

I wore my first kilt when I was 5 years old. My mom made it for me to wear to a regimental pipe band performance (probably Black Watch, but I don't really remember). Afterwards she may have regretted it, because it left her with the task of convincing me that wearing it to school was probably not a good idea. Now, after half a century of playing in pipe bands, wearing the kilt seems pretty normal, even mundane.

Coincidence is so unexpected. Anyway, tonight is my last night in Scotland and I have a serious case of the blues. In one week I've managed to fall in love quite hard for this country in a way I never anticipated. The Highlands are so stunning they can make you cry. And the people are incredibly warm, friendly, kind, curious. My tour guide in the Highlands was so passionate about his country and man could he spin a story. I've found a scotch I really like and I had haggis 4 times in 7 days. Next on the list...a kilt.

I live in Scotland but I am not a Scot. I have worn the kilt most of the time for the last 5 years. I have never ever had anyone say to me that I should not. On the contrary, folk usually are pleased to see a man wearing the kilt and say so, both here in Scotland and elsewhere. I walked into a bar in the rural south on the way back from the Highland Games in my kilt. Guy turns around and says, "Sit here, man, you look like someone interesting to talk to". In the end, if you wear it in as much confidence as you wear pants, you'll be good to go. As far as being Scottish enough? Well, no one's anything enough in the US...we are such a mixed bag here. I'm glad they're positive. I also live in a small conservative city and get ragged on for my kilts. Got called a "dress wearing f@9" at walmart the other day. Sad part is most people in my area are Scottish descendents and they just don't get it.

I'm two generations from Scottish heritage (Robertson). I know enough to know that Robertson is one of the major families of Clan Donnachaidh, and I can pick the Robertson tartans out of a lineup. When I decide to wear my kilt, I've never encountered a "gatekeeper" challenging my heritage or worthiness to wear said kilt. Moreover, I regularly receive compliments. What I WOULD ask those interested in wearing the kilt is to understand the history of the tartan one chooses to wear if one does not have a heritage connection with a clan. This will engender goodwill if one encounters a person of that clan or family that one took the time to learn something about the tartan and the associated clan, and didn't just pick it at random.

I really have always dared to be different. Originally I stated off wearing a kilt as a "costume" for St Patty's day, my wife' and son's birthday BTW. Fast forward, most of my close associations are referring to my Kilts as a mid-life-crisis. Is 40 and up mid life? LOL. (I'm 42) Got my first couple because my friend bought the wrong size, twice. (Utility Kilt) We got them for a Ren type fair my other friend is building up. So we are working and helping him grow the fair. In comes the Kilts. I find myself wearing them around the house alot. Do chores in it. It is a very comfortable piece of clothing.

I was the "guy" that never got dared to do something, because I was the guy that WOULD go out and do it. That's how I ended up wearing my first kilt to an obstacle course race. I have good ones for nice wear, and casual ones for hiking, kayaking, and, of course, OCR running.

I'm not Scottish but a Geordie. I've been told I'm " Just a jock but with ma heed bashed in " 😄...so I've worn kilts...best to check if you surname has a tartan...if not wear a neutral tartan. Luckily my surname does have a tartan. But as ex military I prefer to wear the Help for Heroes kilt attire. A man wearing a kilt drives the ladies wild...and curious 😊😆

I was on holiday in Scotland this Summer, and more for the fun of it checked how much a kilt was. Found one in my size, a colour (didn't recognize the tartan, didn't think it important, thought it's a fake pattern for tourists) I like and that works with all of my shirts and jumpers, and tried it. Felt weird at first, but it was within budget, and it looked like me, so I bought it. Wear it a lot around the house, in the garden, still working on the courage to wear it outside, though, since we're a small town full of narrow-minded blockheads. Did wear it for a short walk to the recycling bin two blocks down a bit ago, so there's progress. And I looked up how to properly wear it, since I wanted to do it right.

Thanks for a great discussion. I recall the first time I more my MacKinnon kilt. It was to a gala dinner at Loon Mountain NH. I walked in feeling proud and a bit nervous. A very sweet little elderly woman came right up to me after walking into the ballroom and quietly whispered in my ear that my kilt was on backward. After a hasty trip to the bathroom my wife and I had a hearty laugh.

The first time I wore a kilt was for my wedding. It wasn't a very traditional wedding, and my bride was wearing a red dress. So I thought about what I could wear that was also not particularly traditional. I rented a PC kilt outfit with an Irish National kilt. I was a little unsure at first, but once I put the entire outfit on, I loved how I looked in it. And everyone at the wedding/reception was very positive. It wasn't long after that I purchased my first kilt, and now I've added a second. I'm not a serial kilter by any stretch, but I'm always looking for opportunities to wear one. In fact, my parents are in from out of state, and I'll be donning my County Down kilt in about an hour from now! Kilt on, everyone!

I am Scottish 67 yrs old but lived in England since I was 5. I wear kilts all over the world and drove solo from Birmingham UK to Cape Town South Africa always in a kilt. Everywhere I went it was really well received. Yes some people laugh but not in a bad way. It makes their day. I now have kilts made in Egypt and South Africa, very special memories of my trip. Even strong Muslim countries have been fine Sudan loved them and they play bagpipes there. Saudi Arabia were fine too ladies in niqab's queuing up for photos breaks a lot of barriers down. The odd official in Saudi spoke to me in public areas but as soon as you say its national dress in Scotland they were a little miffed but fine. Just get on with it and dont worry about other folk. Its a great way to advertise Scotland to the world :-)

As a Native with a Scottish father, I have never had my Scots or Celtic ancestry questioned by actual Scots. As a matter of fact, I wear a Shaw tartan sash and clan brooch pin as part of my Cherokee regalia. There have, however, been a few Americans who have questioned whether or not I had the right to do so, as if I have to honor just one heritage and shun the other. That is just plain ignorance as far as I'm concerned. Men of many cultures - including right here in the Western Hemisphere - have worn attire that can be called kilts. The kilt is comfortable, be it a full-on wool tartan or heavy cotton Utilikilt. As for dealing with haters, naysayers, and idiots trying to stir up shit, why else do you think the Almighty gave you a middle finger?

My first kilt - was a cheap polyviscose kilt to wear when running hot summer marathons. I got so many compliments and positive feedback, it made me want a "real" kilt. While in Scotland I visited a fine kiltmaker who made me a Cunningham Tartan kilt that I wear on special occasions. Still nothing but positive feedback. My USA kilt gets nothing but positive feedback. While running a race with the poly kilt a Scotsman approached me and complimented me, asking nothing about my heritage or why I chose a kilt, he just said I looked "regal" in it. I wear it for ME, not for THEM, but I find that THEY are more complimentary than critical of the kilt. Do it for YOU and not for THEM.

Two words. Acculturation and assimilation. I'm a Hines 57, another words, a mutt on the geographic stage. My family name does NOT have a tartan associated with it. (I adopted the Kilts and Culture as my Clan colors). But my family names has a history, it's from Breton. The Bretons migrated to many places. Scotland being one of them, after the battle of 1066. Through "acculturation" into the lowlands or border region, they became like the people of the area. Another known family outcropping is from the Norsemen who settled on Scotland along the same southern or border region. They "assimilated" to the area. I'm not Scottish by blood, but yet I kinda am by design. I'm sure over the decades, to centuries, there is as much Scottish blood in my veins as there are French/Breton and Norse in modern Scottish nationals.

I purchased and wore my first kilt at a Ren Fest south of Atlanta, Ga. 4 years ago. Since then I discovered I am mostly Scottish by my DNA. I now own three kilts. One for my Military past, one for my career, and a Blackwatch kilt. I am still discovering the Genealogical information about the different clans in my ancestry. Chattin, Bruce, MacQueen, MacThomas, and Cunninghams are on both sides of my family tree. I do not have much past, my grandparents, on my fathers' side. I always thought I was Native American and Germanic. DNA I am discovering can be very different than your parents and siblings. I say embrace it either way but wear it respectfully, and properly.

My mother's family traces back to Clan Lamont and I have had the pleasure of visiting my distant relatives in Dunoon, Scotland. True, the American branch of the family has been in Massachusetts since 1750 but I think I am "Scottish enough" to wear a kilt - and so do my Scottish relatives. After all, the present Laird of Clan Lamont lives in New Zealand - I think he's "Scottish enough" to wear a kilt too.

I regularly wore a kilt on nights out a couple of years ago in Essex, where I was born. I moved to the Highlands of Scotland in August 2021. I got a job, bought a flat and had a kilt made at the local outfitters, 'Scottish National' tartan, because I don't have a clan. I wear it as often as I can and I've always ever had positive comments from the locals. Next week I'm off to see a posh show in Edinburgh and intend to wear the full regalia. No one here in Scotland will negatively care how Scottish you are if you’re wearing a kilt. I don’t know anyone that would see it as disrespectful. I enjoy wearing all of my kilts as regularly as I can. I have full dress outfits and non traditional outfits that I wear depending on the event I’m attending. Don’t worry about “what’s correct” and just enjoy wearing the damn kilt! They’re awesome and super comfy!

Just purchased my first two kilts and even though my ole lady threatened to send them back our sons said they would look after them when they came in the mail. I am some Scottish, Irish, Cherokee on my mother’s side. German, French Italian on my father’s side. I have loved the way the kilts look for years of my life and finally will have a set this weekend.

I once got into an argument with a girlfriend about wearing a kilt. She didn't think that they were masculine, but she got over it. I remember telling her that it's a pretty confident guy who would wear a kilt, and that men in kilts have fought on battlefields and survived in some pretty austere conditions. As some would say, "Kilts: because balls this big don't fit in pants." On the subject of gatekeeping, the way that I look at it is cultural appropriation versus cultural appreciation. I have a friend who has no Celtic ancestry, but was a premier Highland dancer. I have friends with no Celtic ancestry who play in pipe bands. They do it because they love and celebrate the culture. Besides, it's not like kilts are the only garment like this worn by men around the world. Wear the kilt with respect to the culture that it's from, and I won't really have issues. Wear it to mock culture or otherwise be disrespectful though, then I will have issues.

Whether it is a kilt, a kimono or geisha outfit, or for that matter anything else you do, think or behave ; if some one has a problem with you, THEY have the problem- it is not yours to worry about. If they are offended, upset or other, the problem is theirs to deal with and not yours to fret over.

Kilts are a traditional way to display Clan Affiliation. ANYONE can wear a kilt. But, if you respect traditions, you do NOT wear a tartan of a specific clan if you are not a member of that specific clan.

Born and raised in Scotland, emigrated to America following the Army and married by Taiwanese husband in San Francisco. We returned to my home of Glasgow to celebrate our 20th anniversary with a renewal of vows at a gorgeous castle on the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. We had around one-hundred guys from all over the world, Taiwan, the USA, even England, all of whom rented kilts to enjoy the experience - and ALL LOVED THE EXPERIENCE. Some especially enjoyed being fitted for their Kilt at the rental store and walking to our host hotel in Glasgow before jumping on coaches to head to our ceremony. Everyone on the street complimented them as they walked to the hotel, and everyone in the hotel mentioned many times to guest that they had never seen so many people in Kilts! If you want to wear a Kilt - wear it proudly and wear it well. Most Scots will not have any problem at all with anyone wearing a Kilt - JUST DON'T PUT ICE IN YOUR DAMNED WHISKY - THAT WILL CAUSE A PROBLEM, LOL.

Most of my Scottish ancestors were jacobites and came to America for refuge. I decend from the Stewart, Douglas, Wallis, etc. More or less Scottish royalty and nobility. When I did the genealogy and found this it blew my mind. With that being said how would I choose my tartan? I live in Texas where it's been 100+ degrees every day for the last 8 weeks and wearing a kilt the traditional way sounds awsome. The air flow to my lower half, no swamp crotch.

American born here. I personally would not wear a kilt that was not in my heritage. I guess I am a fuddy duddy. I wear my father's kilt (Black Watch) and my mother's tartan for flashes. People will engage me in the questions and I enjoy sharing my heritage and what each piece of Scottish clothing.

Finally got the courage and wearing my kilt to work. As since I took my DNA test and I'm 41% Scott Irish and Welsh so I feel I should hold pride in that. I've only got positive reactions and interest. I got a buddy at work who now wants to get him one haha. It's well worth being yourself rather then letting others make you. Have the courage to be different! It might surprise you. :). I love the comfort and feel of kilt it allows men to have proper airflow and comfort and it looks damn good too.

For me, the hesitation is definitely external. Not only am I not Scottish in heritage, but as a German living in the US, wearing a kilt could potentially be viewed extra awkward, and I would hate to have to explain myself at every occasion. I became interested in kilts mostly from the utilitarian point of view -- I just think they're cool and a very functional piece of garment that should be much more widespread than it is. I do take a strong interest in Celtic culture, and I'm a hobby musician who loves to play music that comes from that part of the world, so I feel I'm making an effort. I guess I'm slowly working up the courage to just do it. I'm thinking about getting a "utility" kilt with the Isle of Skye tartan, which to my understanding is not a specific clan's tartan.

i found my family tartan close to 20 years ago . I have bought 2 and wear them ever chance I get . I have heard all the comments both bad and good . But after visiting the highlands back in 2007 i fell in love even more with my heritage and the homelands, so much so that this year I and my family will be moving to England while we look for a house to purchase in Scotland. My hang-ups were all internal. I have had an interest in kilts since I was a teen but I also went to a Catholic high school with uniforms so Kilts were basically only worn by women. Combine that with the maturity of most high school kids and teasing/bullying was a concern. When I got my first kilt this year those concerns came back. I am happy to report that the response has been incredibly positive. Friends, coworkers, and even strangers have complimented the look. It also helps we have a local store calldd the British Isles Shoppe and they are such a welcoming community. It was there I bought my first sporran and when I wore it back fhere they fawned over me; such an incredible confidence boost. Now my only regret is not doing this sooner. It is so comfortable and I have yet to have a negative reaction - and at this point the positivity I have received would easily outweigh anyone who just wants to be sour.

Well... kinda weird to coment like 2 years later but I'd like to share my Story. I'm currently in Edingburgh, have been driving around Scotland for almost three weeks. Yesterday I arrived in Edingburgh and found a wonderful Kilt and Tartan Store. And I bought a male kilt even if I am biologically female. Kilt, pin, Sporran, Belt... bought it. because I fell in love with the culture. And that night i went out with the Kilt. In a Pub. I felt proud and weird at the same time, but i've done it. people grind at me, looked at me, but maybe they are just not brave enough to do it on their own? It took me a lot of energy. I'd have to say for me it was both internal and external internal because I do have Scottish Heritage on my maternal line through my mother and it's generally a paternal thing and the other internal part would be just being concerned to do it right so as not to look like a fool and bring disgrace or shame to my family my heritage or myself. And external it's just the fact that it was a nerve-wracking thing when I decided to do it. The way I overcame that was when I seriously started contemplating wearing a kilt after 20-plus years of learning of my Scottish connection, was to educate myself, and a lot of my information I have got through you. And when I finally got my utility Kilt, I do now have a utility Kilt and 3 Tartan kilts, I have heard mr. Rocky say before those who mind don't matter those who matter don't mind, I got it I put it on pulled up my boot straps and went out and did it. I have had some odd looks, but I also have had a couple of positive engaging conversations about it. All in all the best thing to do, as Nike likes ro say,"just do it".

Just sent a couple messages to you before I found this video. The first time I was overheated at Ren Faire and decided on a whim to buy a kilt I was like "wow, this is completely comfortable and would love to wear these normally." Then I felt a bit uncomfortable about not being anywhere near Scottish and what someone would think when they saw me wearing a kilt. I didn't want to be offensive to a group but at the same time wanted to wear something that was pretty much made for the southern Arizona climate. My opinion is that I want to get a tartan designed for specifically my family, and then wear that after it has been registered, so I both respect all other designs and wear it with pride.

My first times wearing a kilt was easy, I was working at a friends shop at the Minnesota Renaissance Fair. Everybody was period dressed and it was easy. My first few times in general public, harder. I chose Halloween costume party, later just everyday out in public. It is not common for me by any means, I sort of look at it like wearing a suit; for dressed up occasions.

I am from Mexico and for a few months I have wanted to buy a kilt, and I had the opportunity to buy it and it is on its way to my country. I have faced complaints from my friends, parents, grandmother and siblings. Especially because they say that apart from the fact that I am not Scottish, that I would look ridiculous, that this is a taste of "homosexual" people (not to offend those of that orientation) and that some flat out tell me that I am not approach them if I do. Here in Mexico, people are mostly strong-willed and closed-minded, it doesn't surprise me that some fool calls me out on the streets while I walk or that my family rejects me, but this video makes me have an idea of ​​what I should do. With most attire associated with a culture, those of the culture usually embrace others wearing their culture. It’s often those not of the culture that usually wrongly call it ‘cultural appropriation’ and say you shouldn’t. It’s generally just be respectful when you do. Also regarding ‘doing it right’ most of the ‘rules’ with kilt wearing were created after the ban of wearing the kilt where it became a regimented item only (mainly, it’s more complicated than that. Look up Scotland history tours ‘what they don’t say about the kilt’ for more in depth) some of the ‘rules’ around the kilt were created as just ways to make more money by using more material.

I am English and live in London, I'm entitled to wear the Gordon Tartan through my mothers side who were from Northern Ireland and, (because of my military service), I am entitled to wear the 'War' Stewart Tartan. I have worn both - though it does take some thinking about wearing it when and when, appropriateness is important.
