Fun fact: you don't need to solve for X, you can just subtract 10 from both sides. 2x+5 - 10 = 2x - 5. And 11-10 = 1. Half way to that shortcut would be just solving for 2x, since that term appears in both expressions.you can just treat it as the variable to solve for. But yeah, 2x = 6 so X = 3. Beth and Mo both had those numbers on their boards so they solved for X then plugged it into 2X-5. I also found it weird that Beth fumbled her explanation so completely. Like maybe she just left out some words between "solve for X" and "1". Zach didn't show his work so we don't know if that was a lucky guess on his part; he wasn't celebrating like the ladies were so maybe? Like maybe he just went for a joke instead of spending his time on solving it. I hoped they'd all get this right, since it's really not hard and they had a board to keep track of what they were doing so it wasn't just all in their heads where it's easy to lose track if you don't regularly think about number problems. Interesting choice of problem, though, that it's *not* just solving a single equation for one unknown like people are probably used to from basic algebra. And interesting choice to include a shortcut. It took me about 2 to 3 seconds to solve this, but I'm a computer programmer not a comedian. :P

It stuck with you so you could answer right here! Things pay off in the weirdest ways sometimes. I skipped a grade in math, but I've never been exceptional, and I honestly had to cheat my way through algebra 1, algebra 2 I got a tutor who taught piano and studied languages on the side - once she let me start seeing things like languages (I grew up with english as my third language, and I love learning, so I was fluent by then in 7, as of now, 14) and make comparisons to grammar, algebra actually started to make sense to me. Previous teachers were pissed I don't think linearly (my assignments showed this) a lot because I have ADHD and also grew up in a hunter-gatherer society and culture which benefited me where I'm from, but getting places outside of there to listen to me has always been a challenge 😅 I was excited when I got this question right
