Very good sharing Chris. Thanks. I have been starting making an animated game character as a hobby. Tried both procreate and fresco. In procreate I like the freature of able to export each png layer so that i can direct paste to unity. Since fresco have the sequence in 1 layer instead of multiple like procreate, is there a way to export the multiple sequence all at once?

Yes you can do that. Just go to export at the top left and you’ll find png sequence under the motion options. Thanks!

Thanks! Seems like it will export as a zip file instead of directly save multiple images like procreate. I think this will help to make things neater and faster as fresco will directly make folder of it once it exported. Awesome!!! ✨

You can use multiple layers per sequence in Procreate by making it a group, makes animating a bit easier :). But Fresco definitly has more options

Ah yeah; forgot to mention that. But you also have to make sure it ends up being the exact amount of frames.

Fresco is the clear leader with animation between the two programs. But I’m curious to see what the big Procreate event is for on Sept 8. I have a feeling it’s about animation.

I would love if Fresco would show even more love for animation. Tinted onion skin frames (with adjustable colors like in Procreate), cloned frames like in Krita (which allows you to change one frame and each clone in the timeline gets updated, too) and a real keyframe-based timeline would be AMAZING!

I've done a little animating in both (well, sort of) and Fresco clearly has the edge, but I've struggled to establish a good workflow for drawing/painting in Fresco. While it's no big deal really to move a file over from Procreate to add moving elements, in practice it just never happens. I get so lost in my work and don't realise until I'm already halfway through animating in Procreate.

I've found that once you spend a little more time just drawing/painting in Fresco that it becomes very natural. As someone who used Procreate for years and then switched over to Fresco-I believe any of that initial "struggle" is just normal adapting to a new interface. Fresco isn't lacking in that area-in fact it's better in a lot of ways.

Does clip paint studio do this?

Clip Studio Paint has traditional animation features, but you need the EX version if you seriously want to animate, as the Pro has a limited amount of frames per animation (24). CSP has the trditional tools, and can do a lot of things with layers, and it has some really good workflow if you want to do anime and such. However, CSP does not have these movement options or tweening, which is a real shame. The animation options are also way more complex, so you really need to learn it to benefit from them. I also think that the UI is not very good for iPads, as the animation windows take up a lot of screen space. It is much better on a Computer for that.

Adobe Fresco is free for nearly all features, but the paid version is 9.99 per year and allows for unlimited brushes and more creative cloud storage. I believe Procreate is a one time fee of 9.99.

I compared it with procreate because it’s the most popular iPad drawing app. I’ve never heard of toonsquid, thanks for the suggestion though, I’ll try to remember to check it out.

Fresco is a great app but there is no way to save files on your device. It only save files on the cloud which is a deal breaker for me. I don’t want my personal work going to a third party. This also slows down my process and is very clunky to work with. Hope they can fix this in the future (lol I know they won’t, Adobe is a super greedy company and this practice is in benefit of that). I’m sticking to Procreate since they are more ethical and have more respect for their customers.

You can save files onto your iPad the same way you would if you were working in an app like Photoshop on a computer. You just export a psd and choose your files as the location. I’m surprised you find it clunky though, one of the reasons I like it so much is how snappy and streamlined it is. Procreate is definitely a great app though, so if that works for you then that’s perfect. And who knows what new features will be coming next month.
