One really good point they made is the difference between head and chin ko’s. From what I recall rob got sat down with a straight to the chin and then melted under Dricus’s barrage. With Izzy he got shipped on his chin and was stopped by precision. Volk got stopped via power (a brutal kick) from a guy up a weight class that cuts a lot of weight and the impact was to his head. His brain will protect him by shutting off quicker from here on out. It’s not the same as Rob at all imo

If it doesn't go well against Topuria, I hope Volk will take some time off to face his demons and come back mentally stronger... I feel like the only hole in his game is the fact that he's so eager to fight that he'll come back too soon every time to prove to himself that he's still got it, instead of focusing on the main problem, his mental state. So tough to see a legend and a guy we all love like that struggle with his demons...

he also has a crazy stat to beat. From the lighter divisions (170 and below) there are 30 losses and 2 wins from fighters 35 years or older that have fought in a title fight. The two wins are from Woodley. Every other fighter that was 35 or older lost in a title fight, defence or challenger. If Volk wins, he joins Woodley as the only ones to beat the clock.

Every one of these fighters should 110% need a sports psychologist. It’s so mental and if your mental best your performance will show it. After being hurt and beat up badly like Tony Ferg against The Highlight or being KO’d like Usman with Edwards or having a freak accident like Silva vs Wiedman all these changes a fighter. Most can’t really deal with it and being tentative can make all the difference. I’d love to see the records of guys before and after. Same with injuries in any sports. It messes with You mentally. I hope Volk is alright but because of the KO I’m leaning Topuria as well. If he didn’t get KO’d I’d say Volk. He should have taken a guy without KO power for his first fight back. I love Volk and I hope he’s ok in fighting and in life!! Edit: ** I said Need and that isn’t accurate I should have said all the fighters should try out therapy and use a therapist to see if it helps with certain aspects that may be hindering them to be their best**
@andrewalaskiewicz38
@andrewalaskiewicz38 9 ай бұрын
Also people start realizing tendencies and where you can take advantage of people. How they react like Rockhold who was unbeatable until people realized he drops his hands and is susceptible to Left Hook Larry. DC with the body shots. So there’s a mix of fighters being in their head and being tentative and opponents figuring out their weaknesses.

@@danelynch7171 you don’t just use a therapist when you’re struggling or have mental issues my dude. You want to sharpen all your tools to be the best you can be. That starts with your mind and body. These guys are dealing with a kill or be killed situation multiple times a year. No matter what that’s trauma and also you gotta keep yourself sharp and mind right. So this is a way to talk with somebody that you know has your best interest that won’t tell a soul. They’re there to help make you be the best version of yourself. Not just fix you if your mind isn’t right.
@andrewalaskiewicz38
@andrewalaskiewicz38 9 ай бұрын
@@Youssef-hd5bl it’s another tool that can help make these fighters better. Why not take advantage of it especially if your solution is not taking about it and using drugs and alcohol like a bunch of people do to cope. Using a therapist isn’t a sign of weakness or illness it shows that you want to better yourself and be the best version of you that you can be. Chael admitted to seeing someone because he would win every round of every fight but at the end of fights he was winning he would find a way to lose and he wanted to fix that and figure out why that kept happening. Not sure if it was his idea or court ordered or company ordered but either way I can bet that he’d say and agree it helped in more ways than he could ever realize.

In the military in basic training, when someone suffers heatstroke, they have to wear an orange safety vest afterwards. Not to shame them. But to make sure drill sergeants know this person is at greater risk of suffering heat stroke again and to watch out for them. It is the same for knockouts. Once your body knows that's an option., the neural pathways are established and the easier it is for it to happen again. Each new KO makes that neural pathway easier and easier for the body to take. There needs to be a long break, long enough for the body to forget that pathway.

Also on another note. The world of mixed martial arts will be changing in the next 5 years now that it was sold to Zuffa. A new promotion will rise to fame. 5 min rounds. Bare knuckle fights. Submission and ground game still welcome. The fights will not end though until a tapout, knockout or doctor stoppage. Real life gladiators. This is how it needs to be. These men are built different and to many careers and records of these men get fumbled in the hands of judges o4 bad stoppages. Ofcourse you still need some rules. No groin shots, no back of the head shots. No eye pokes. This 12 to 6 elbow needs to go. One hand on the ground or a man on one knee to avoid being hit will go. We all need to understand these men are built different. They train their whole lives be the baddest men on the planet. There will be weight classes still, but there needs to be an open weight division for these cross over fights of champion vs champion. So if a fighter is champion in a weight class and chooses to join the open weight class division to test themselves against other champions then this should be allowed. I think this new nopen weight class division should be only available to fighters who hold a belt. I dont think any old fighter with a beef with another in a different weight class should be able to just call them out and move to the weight class tonsquare off. It they allowed that the weight class would be chaos and a mockery. I also believe promotions should not be aloud to lock a fighter into their promotion for more then 3 fight contracts. As their fame rises they should have the right to fight the best of the best from other promotions. This open weight class for belt holders only would give us the fans, a chance to see the best of the best from all over the world to battle it out for who truly is the baddest most extreme champion of their time. Dont think any old heavyweight champion would just rule this open weightclass exclusive to belt holders either. Fighters in middle weight would be able to gain weight fighting a bigger guy with longer training camps to set up these kinds of fights. Alot of fighters today as well are scared of bareknuckle. They fight for points on a score card to win fights. 90 % of them fight this way. This would eliminate that kind of stale, nonsense fights we as fans hate to watch. We would finally be able to see who the real toughest men on the planet would be. Thisbwould be a promotion where fighters whobare champions and make dogshit fo4 paychecks to make real money as well. What do you all think of this idea? Wouldnthis be something you would like to see? Or even start off with a once a year event bewtween all the bigger promotions today. A BEST OF THE BEST PAYPERVIEW. Where all the main promotions come together once a year to hage eliminator rounds of champion vs champion in each weight class to prove once and for all who the best champions are of every weight class. They could hold the event over a 3 month period even. 12 payperviews, one event each Saturday of the weekends. Until you get down to the 2 best fighters of all promotions for each weight class for the final payperview event. With an open weight class following the best of the best fights if anybkf the remaining champions 2ant to prive they can beat other champions who also won the eliminator payperview. I just think this would be epic and we as fans would truly be able to know then who the best fighter in the world would truly be. If they abre concerned about size different break it up into class3sbof 3 weight classes eligible. Cruiser, bantam and feather weight. Light weight, Welter weight and middle weight. Light heavyweight, heavyweight and make a new ass for anyone over 260lbs. The champions of those classes can battle it out in the open weight class division for champions from any promotion. I just believe this is better for the fighters regard to pay scale, truly shkw who the best in the world are so the rankings are done correctly and to help seal these fighters names in history and the hall of fame for their legacies. Please let me knlw your thoughts on all this. I know its a long post and i hope people read it.

I still think Volk is incredible. I would still consider him P4P best regardless of him not making a successful attempt at moving to lightweight. I cannot speak on KO loss effects on fighters. I’ve never had an MMA career. I’ve never lost consciousness. Worst I’ve ever been was dropped. There’s still a lot we don’t know about head trauma injuries. I think any type of loss could have huge mental effect on fighter… maybe more than physical. GSP said he feared being dominated more than having a KO loss. It’s says more about a fighter getting dominated over 5 rounds than getting caught with one good shot. Whether it’s KO, submission, or domination a loss can wreak havoc on a fighter’s mind. One bad loss like Ferguson or Reyes had and sometimes they never come back from it.

Look at Rose vs Weili 1 and then 2. Weili is visibly a lot more careful the first 2 rounds compared to how she fought before she got knocked out. Definitely changed. Since then has gone a lot more into classic wrestling rather than the old Weili who blocked with her face

Superb interview - both spoke brilliantly. Fighters like Covington and Strickland - each of whom recently lost fair and square - could learn more than a thing or two from Nathaniel Wood about sportsmanship and how s true martial arts fighter should act in defeat.

I WISH VOLK WIN THIS FIGHT....BUT HERE ARE SOME POINTS TO CONSIDER 1. AGE = 35 { KINDA OLD, STATS SAY THE TRUTH ABOUT TITLE DEFENSES AFTER 35 FOR LIGHTER WEIGHT ] 2. TIME/DURATION = TOO EARLY FOR A FIGHT BELOW THE WEIGHT CLASS 3. COMING AFTER A KO LOSS IN A UPPERWEIGHT CLASS AND HAS TO GO DOWN NOW....PERIERA CASE IS DIFFERENT AS VOLK WILL FACE BETTER OPPONENT AND GOIN A WEIGHT CLASS DOWN 4. MANY THINGS ARE THERE BUT WE DONNO WHAT WILL HAPPEN

During Brad talking from 10:14 onwards, please don't skip through things to make the video shorter. It's super noticeable and annoying. I feel like it took away from what he said - I know you want your viewers to go watch the podcast , but that type of editing took away from the video a bit. Quality should be delivered on all platforms. Trying to be constructive, anyway, love the content and all you do!

I’ve trained under Pickett, I was in attendance for his last fight, he’s great! Brad was one of the first TRULY world-class well-rounded MMA fighters from the UK (along with Bisping & Pearson), he invested heavily in attending American Top Team, & that gave him an incredibly diverse skillset, with strengths in wrestling, boxing & GnP, he was able to match & even beat a who’s-who of world class talent. Seeing his insight in this topic is wonderful, & to have him now fully transitioned to coaching here in the UK, he’ll be developing the next generation of champions without any doubt (for a start Nathan has all the skills for sure). A great watch
