For over fifty years, Judy Blume’s classic and groundbreaking novel Are You There God? In Lionsgate’s big-screen adaptation, 11-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is uprooted from her life in New York City for the suburbs of New Jersey, going through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school. My mom unfortunaely passed away from brain cancer last year but I disctinctly remember her excitedly buying me this book and having me read when I was a kid in the 2000s just as she did in the 70s. I know we would be watching this together if she was still here, so I'm sure I will for her when this comes out.

i know your pain thanks to biden bringing covid into this country i have last loved one to that and cancer, my uncle was shaving when he noticed his eyes had a yellow tinge to them, he went for an exam one doctor told him he needed a liver trans plant the second doctor told him there's no hope stage 4 cancer. now my uncle lived his life drinking, and he tolerated no shit he was eternally faithful to his wife in fact one evening a woman came up and tried to get him interested unlike most he slammed her against the wall and warned her never to come near him again. i had an argument with my aunt because im a believer and i dint want a priest walking in there lying to him and claiming the power to forgive sins, i sent another in my place, during my uncles life he loved to fish and hunt, but as he breathed his last the property around his house and farm an invasion took place we were surrounded by huge Bucks and does of every size 100s of them, making it dangerous to even step out the door but the Bucks weren't being territorial they were friendly and seemed gentle, i believe these animals were paying tribute to him, he was dead within 6 months of his diagnosis, others followed him

I do that for my sister who passed away some years ago. The first two years were really hard, but then I just started to do fun stuff in her name, dedicated to her, from time to time, and it's wonderful. She was a force of nature. Like a love to go to the ocean in the beginning of Summer and have a good swim "this one is for Joana" for example. Or buying good oil crayons (she was an artist) at a art shop. Or dance to a really good song ❤. I am sorry for your mom. The internet is this strange world, because I am not American and never heard of this book. But when I will go watch it, your story and your mother excited for you to read it, will stick with me. 💖

Born in 66. My first real book I remember reading was Anne of Green Gables, but my favorite author was Judy Blume. It really looks like the casting and screenwriting is really well done. I remember sneaking into my Mom’s room and read her Erma Bombeck paperback. And she had “Wifey” by Judy Blume:) Wow!

Oh my goodness me too. I lived at the library and it became my best friend. I love “Are you there God It’s me Margaret” so much that when I was in my 30’s (57 now) I bought the book again just to read it all over again and share with my daughters. It’s a timeless classic.

I am now 60 years old. I was 8 or 9 when this book came out and it was so unlike anything else out at the time. No other book talked about periods and all the other important things we girls would go through. Then, when I was in high school, Judy Blume wrote Forever and it changed how I felt about boys/dating as a teen. Loved that movie with Stephanie Zimbalist and so glad they are FINALLY making this movie, and like a lot of you so glad they are keeping the 1970s setting.

I am 51 years old, and I remember signing this book out from the library over and over again. My mind was blown, because this book was a far cry from the Ramona books by Beverley Cleary; no disrespect to her. This book resonated with me, and a lot of my peers. I am glad they are making it into a movie, because this book has been banned in Florida, and is set to be banned in other states of the union. At the very least, you know kids will be streaming this movie on their devices Thanks to Ms. Blume for all the books she has written over the years.

I picked up this book in the fifth grade. I had read all the "Fudge" books by Judy Bloom so I just naturally picked up the next one. The confusion on one girls face in my class as to why I (a boy) was reading this book about a girl getting her period (unbeknownst to me) was hilarious. As I am reading I get to THE part and went to my mother and asked, "what's a period?" Being the kind and gentle woman that she was told me all about puberty and even bought me a book on it. That was quite the education day.

This Judy Blume book resonated so loudly w me. I was a late “blumer” and everyone else got all of their changes in elementary. I didn’t until Jr High. I stuffed, lied bc I felt so abnormal! Lol! I’m now 53, menopausal & ended up getting a breast augmentation. Now, for a young girl who badly wanted to start her cycle, mine has finally ceased 5 yrs ago! And, for wanting breasts that were larger, I wish I could have them removed. We all go through seasons & cycles. It’s odd how we end up abhorring the very things we thought we wanted so desperately. Someone should write a sequel for all of us “Blumers” who are now menopausal:)

The scene towards the end with the male cashier reminds me of the first time I purchased a bra on my own. Out of all the registers in the store only one was open and operated by a male cashier who looked like he was around my age. I had a bunch of sets I had found on a clearance rack for like $2+ each and accepted that if I wanted them I would have to go to that cashier. So I plopped the items up on the counter pretending to busy myself with something just wanting to cash out and the dude was like "oh, that's a really good deal". Ha ha ha. Looking back on it all these years later I'm like "I wish I would have known then what I known now", because me these days would have just totally started making conversation like "yeah, for that price I might as well stock up on a few", or something like that. All that unnecessary shame.

Nobody talked about growing up as realistically in books for kids like Judy Blume did. It didn’t matter to me that it was about a girl’s rite of passage, I still read that book a few times, and I’m very happy they kept this movie set in the same time period in which the book was written. Good writing can make books feel timeless … I mean clothing and other fads change throughout the decades, but we as humans pretty much stay the same. I mean it really doesn’t matter if a 13 yr old girl is reading the book in 1970 or 2020. All the thoughts and feelings are still there. Two other books really come to mind that really feel timeless to me and those are “Little Women”. and “Catcher In the Rye.” … If you haven’t read those books, I can’t recommend them enough! As a side note, I have seen every tv and screen version of “Little Women” and I have no idea why they keep failing. I guess the book is so good that nothing else can compare. … And this last version, the one everyone was so crazy about was the worst! Why can’t Jo be a feminist AND want a loving husband?? Lots of feminists throughout history married adoring men who supported them as equals! What is so wrong with that? Sorry! I didn’t mean to go off on a tangent

this book means so much to me. When my mom first showed it to me, she seemed so happy and joyful that i finally got to read it (i was 10 ish maybe younger and im 16 now) and i’ve never ever forgotten that book and how much it impacted me. It not only represents the transition from child to young adult beautifully, but it represents the evolution of a mother daughter relationship as the years go on. People can’t live forever, but the emotions that come about when i read this book make me feel like i’ll never die. Thank you so much Judy Blume❤️

I am 54 years old and have fond memories of being 12 and reading this book with my 10 year old cousin. I loved it because we were going through it at the same time. It was 1980. Bless youvJudy Bloom for making us young girls feel as normal as we could!

My mom had me read the book when I was in the 4th grade in 2006. I loved it so much that I read it twice. Until I saw the trailer I didn't know it was set in the 70's. It was so relatable that I never even considered the time period. My mom and I can't wait to see this!!

On one hand, I’m mind-boggled that it took this long to make this classic into a movie and I’m thrilled that new generations will have a chance to discover this book. Like a lot of 70s and 80s kids, I read my copy of Are You There God to shreds. On the other hand I’m glad that they waited til now because an earlier version would have gone in too hard on the “sensitivity” of the topic and probably been painful to watch, and this looks like it has a much lighter touch. I’m looking forward to it.

Our children did too! Thank God they experienced our fun before the world changed OUTDOOR FUN 😒 The kids nowadays missing out so. Let's pray for the world. I remember reading this and for the first time a book kept me up all night. It explained what young girls are going through and was very relatable. So happy they are making a movie about it. I think this would be good for young men too as it would help understand how girls go through adolescence.

I was in junior high in the early 70s when I read this book and it was so great to read something that resonated with my life. The soundtrack alone is going to make me cry, remembering this time period (no pun intended), and how mad I was at my mother when they did the menstruation teaching in school because it seemed like I was the only girl in the room who did not already know what they were talking about, lol. The casting looks great. Can't wait to see it. This movie is a long time coming and relieved that they kept it 70s.

Probably like a lot of people, this was one of the books I reread the most as a kid - it both taught me what a period was and shaped my views on God. I never thought it could be made into a movie because a lot of the story is about periods and I wasn't sure how that would come across on screen, but this looks good.

I think it really helps girls feel seen and stays genuine to the book. All the characters were relatable and warm. A friend and I just saw this. So good. Very funny & heartwarming. She had read the book as a kid, I hadn't but we both really liked it. I think it is definitely important for young girls. There's not many movies (or books) that talk about these kinds of things. It's surprising still after so many years. First thing after I got home I told my siblings that their daughters need to watch it. Either with their friends or as a mother-daughter outing.

Love this is being made to a movie. I read this and other Judy blume books and even read them to my daughters before bed. When I read to them it was supposed to be one chapter every night but they never wanted me to stop. These are my most precious memories. Judy Blume books bring everyone together. I still have the books. They are a little worn but I just can't throw them away.
