If I could add something as well being a Journeyman plumber. Learning how to not get frustrated when your fixing other colleagues work consistently. THIS is a huge stepping stone for me and always will be because I do expect quality work from others in my team. Problem therein lies the extra workload in completing yours and then being relied upon from your superiors to fix NCR’s and deficiencies at the same time. Just gotta look at like job security. If an employer is trusting you to fix work with QA/QC issues while still moving the job forward; you’re an asset to that team.

Hey Kenny, thanks for the awesome video! I'm a new subscriber for sure! I was involved for a number of years in the chef trade, and have been thinking of switching my trade to plumbing. I have minimal knowledge of it, but really want to learn and have tons of drive and passion. I've been working at a kitchen and bath supply shop, learning very minimal and basic troubleshooting on installation for faucets, showers etc. I've been there for not even three months, and I'm absolutely obsessed with the knowledge, and have dove head on into wanting to learn the plumbing trade. I wasn't sure because of my age (25) . that it would be plausible, but after watching this video, and a few others of yours and learning that you were 25 yourself, I'm very excited and its boosted my confidence! Definitely going to keep watching, it's so inspiring! Thank you

Plumbing may be a good direction for me to head into. I'm 34 and tired of being one of a few hundred applicants for 1 open office position. I hold 3 degrees, an AS a BA and a Masters and I'm tired of corrupt organizations hiring based off nepotism and favoritism. In the trade industry from my understanding there is little room for connections as long as you're good with your hands. My father owned his own plumbing business in the early 90s and he made very good money. I also have automotive experience and have built tons of cars, so diagnosing, troubleshooting and critical thinking are what I have always excelled at. I'm both educated and mechanically inclined. I also work out a lot and am in excellent shape, far better than I was in my 20s. Great video and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

@@gonzalomadero9848 Exactly! I've always worked hard and was always curious to learn new things. Seems none of that really matters in the white collar world. Hiring managers look at my graduate degree as a threat rather than added value to their company.

Hey Adam, thanks for the question. Honestly, it’s a bit hard to say which type is more in demand right now, but the general vibe I get is that it’s all in demand. I am pushing my son to consider the trades. His dad is a handyman (although no certifications of any kind, and I think he works mostly under the table, no bueno) and my son likes the idea because it is familiar. The local high school has a half-day trade school for the juniors and seniors. The school offers welding (1 or 2 years), construction and drafting (1 or 2 years), among other trades. If he decides he wants to be a plumber, would it be better to do 1 year each of the welding and construction or 2 years of just one of those classes? Which would look better to a prospective employer when applying apprenticeships?
@Kennymolotov6 жыл бұрын
Hi Courtney, thanks for reaching out. My feelings are that it would be more beneficial to try both courses for 1 year each. Both welding and construction and drafting will have some overlap into Plumbing (but not a lot of overlap). I know that when I went to trade school for my apprenticeship we had similar courses like these. So they will definitely help. I hope those helps.

I really appreciate this topic. Do you have any recommendations for areas of specialization if I'm starting as an older person? (assuming you have all the characteristics you mentioned)
@Kennymolotov4 жыл бұрын
Hey Theresa, my feelings are that you should start where you’re most interested. So if it’s plumbing (with all the physical and mental demands) then start there. That way you chase the exact goal you’re striving to achieve. If you were interested in plumbing related things but not necessarily plumbing installation itself, you could always look into water treatment, backflow prevention etc. I hope this helps.

I have a question can a woman who is young like 19 do this trade with little experience? Also how difficult is this sort of trade? What sort of experiences are you likely to Aquire.
@Kennymolotov5 жыл бұрын
Hi Amanda, thanks for the great questions. Women can 100% do this trade, I already know a few women getting their plumbing license as we speak. Now it takes a few years to understand and learn the trade, which is why there is an apprenticeship program. So anyone who is 19yrs old and starting on day one, will find it difficult for sure. You will learn how to work with different materials such as cast iron, copper and plastic pipe. You will learn how to ascertain leaks, troubleshoot different problems in buildings and houses. And how to do repairs and rough ins. I hope this helps.

I’ve been kept on over time jobs for a long time while holding my tongue and not standing up for myself. Which is not good for my mental health and I go home feeling like shit lol. Then there have been the times where I do stand up for myself and guess what, I have “attitude.”Honestly though, after telling a a guy who was treating me like shit to go fuck themselves, I felt so much better. Awkward, dishonest, entitled customers? Eventually, in your career, if your 'phone doesn't stop ringing and beeping and you are working 7 days a week 10-12 hour days then you know that you are doing something right. At this point it is self evident that if you are in demand, put up your prices, cut your hours and get your work/ life balance back. Pick and choose customers carefully. I have attended jobs for new customers where it is all to obvious that some other guy has previously attended and made a complete mess. Gas leaks, water leaks, dangerous wiring. Lions and tigers and bears... Oh my! Try and develop a sixth sense for time wasters and penny pinchers.
