I started at 47 and I’m about to turn 49. I’ll never be a great drummer, but I can see improvement, I can hear it differently now, and I’m enjoying the learning process. Enjoy your videos!

Fantastic! I'm glad you're enjoying the lessons. I've had quite a few students who didn't start playing till they were about your age. It's a great hobby. Lots of fun😀

Let me tell you how much I appreciate this. I am 62, have never played drums before and just ordered my first kit yesterday. To me, it is 1) an activity and 2) a vehicle to set and aspire to goals. Drumming has fascinated me for a long time, I am particularly keen on the skills of Stewart Copeland. I have no intention to join a band and do gigs, I just want to develop some "chops" of my own and have some fun with it. And places like right here are were I will look to for my lessons. Thank you for what you do! Liked and subscribed several days ago.

Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I agree Stewart Copeland is one of my favorites. Very creative. I think you're thinking correctly. The best reason to play the drums is because it's fun! 😀

Well, I never tried drums until I was 64. I always drummed in my head and tapped along to all kinds of music all my life but for some reason never thought about actually doing it. I was talking with a friend who plays guitar and he jams with some buddies. He said I should just go ahead and try it. He suggested an electronic kit, so I bought one and with a week, I was drumming to "Spirit of Radio" by Rush. I then took some lessons and just continued learning songs. I was referred to a band that was looking for someone to fill in at their rehearsals and have been with them off and on for various reason (covid, my hockey playing schedule causing disruptions) and just last month played with them in my first ever live gigs. Two within a couple weeks, the second one being a paid gig. I pick new songs to learn all the time, but I find that there are still some things that I cannot do, so I make up something that sounds the same, but easier for me. At my age, it is taking a while to get my left hand as good as my right. I can do doubles alright, but certain other things I am finding difficult with that hand. I think at my age, I would have to work very hard to increase my speed and left hand. I found it funny when you spoke of people picking up the drums late in life, and then you talk about people who are in their late 30s.

That's fantastic! Age is very relative. I run into people all the time who lament about the fact they turned 30.😀 They think 30 is old. Great that you were able to start in your 60s and play professionally. Regarding your left hand my advice is don't worry about it. Just practice normally - double stroke rolls, paradiddles etc. Your left hand will automatically catch up with your right if you just keep working on your control of the sticks.

I'm glad you liked the video. I have found that all drummers need encouragement including myself. Very easy to doubt what we're able to accomplish. But age is a very relative thing. My Grandmother just passed away at age 104! So you and I may have a long way to go.😀 So if we assume we may live another 40 years how do we want to spend those 40 years? Playing music has been one of the most rewarding things I've done with my time and my life. So don't let your age stop you. Enjoy the journey! 😀In regard to your question about drumsticks, I use Vic Firth sticks exclusively. This particular pair are Vic Firth Signature Series -- Dave Weckl - Nylon Tip. I like these for most styles of drumming. Very versatile. Not too heavy and not too light. Great for practicing rudiments and also for any style on the drum set. Here's the link amzn.to/4aY3yve
