I did study with Mr Morello, my favorite grip is traditional however I get this crazy Neck problem! I think it's best because the stick lays in the cradle! I love to see Buddy just dance with that left hand! To the grip tried Murray Spivak technique but now have gone back to index and thumb grip! The stick seems to move more freely with control!

This video has changed my life in such a short space of time. I’d never heard of Cybernetics until this video. I’m listening to the audiobook over the last week. I’m only on Chapter 2 (several listens repeated) and I can already notice a very slight mental, emotional and somatic difference. I’ve been playing CS Wilicoxon Rollin in Rhythm for the past couple of months and was struggling to execute it consistently and perfectly. I’ve noticed my attempts have gotten better and more consistent in past couple of days, and more importantly my mindset and approach has become less fearful. I told therapist that I’m learning Cybernetics and she was so happy about it. I’ve also been doing this relaxation exercise and wow it’s been amazingly helpful. I’m already a Zen Buddhist dabbler so I’m loving this stuff. Brad thank you so much for this video 😊

Wow, Damn! I did it in the bathroom sitting and not laying down. I closed my eyes and in the end my body was very relaxes. Im sure it would be 1000 times better by laying down. I will try that next time. Today at the orchestra I was told I am always extremely tight at the beginning. And this time I felt it myself the tightness so I was looking for some excercises to loosen up and relaxe so im not tight at all next time i play❤ thank you very much. Like and follow well deserved🤝

Thank you I'm glad it helped. The more you practice those exercises the easier it will get to relax at will. While you're practicing those exercises, sometimes it's good to visualize yourself performing - in orchestra, or for solo competitions, etc. and imagine you're totally confident and relaxed. People have found these type of exercises beneficial for lots of activities. A basketball team improved their free throws by visualizing themselves making the basket every time. Very useful technique for lots of things.

I use three different kinds of pads. The first is the Vater 11" rubber pads, second is the Prologix Blue pad, and the third is Ed Eblen E-pad. I switch them up regularly. I also switch stick size to challenge my hands and build strength.
@BradAllenDrumsKansasCity2 ай бұрын
I'm curious what benefit you've found to switching the pads. Do you feel like it gives you more control of the sticks?
@andrewfrechtman65362 ай бұрын
@@BradAllenDrumsKansasCity the E-pad is useful for both building raw strength and endurance, and for very quiet practice. The Prologix Blue pad is useful for building finesse, and the Vater pad(or its equivalent -The Real Feel pad) is useful for general stick control work. I have found that rotating through the three different kinds of pads improves my touch and sensitivity, as well as my overall power, strength and endurance.

I learned meditation procedures during martial arts training. We did this before and after physical training. These also taught how to empty your mind and thoughts in addition to emptying your body. Too much thinking causes "paralysis by analysis" in all physical training from sports to drumming. Joe Morello and Jeff Hamilton are big proponents of relaxing ALL body parts. When practicing, don't think. Just listen to the rhythm inside your soul, not your brain. This is why live music will bever be replaced by digital drumming. Artificial or forced human drumming cannot flow because music requires soul. Before I practice, I start in total silence, remove all thoughts and "deflate" my body. Then I let the music flow. Don't think of drumming as work. Let it be your freedom. I started playing rock in the 60's and hated the way I played. Wanting to learn jazz after discovering Joe Morello's playing, I searched for a musical drummer and found one. He made me focus on the music instead of the drums. He was like Mr. Miyagi in "The Karate Kid". I was doing exercises without meaning, or so I thought. Then he eventually connected the dots. This was when I discovered the music of drumming from the soul. Yes, rudiments were heavily involved but I didn't think of them that way. This jazz drummer was not a teacher and I was the only student he ever had. He didn't charge me. My payment was to become my best. By the way, he had severe psoriatic arthritis and also filled in for the Johnny Carson Show's drummer, Ed Schaughnessy, when he was on vacation. He was tiny, weighed about 120 pounds, and could blow you away with a solo with brushes. He was a true gentleman who spoke softly, played quietly and reminded me if an Italian Chick Webb. One of a kind.
@BradAllenDrumsKansasCity3 ай бұрын
I can definitely see the connection with martial arts training. I always wanted to do some of that but never did. My daughters both studied Karate. I almost didn't post this video because most drummers find this stuff so strange. But it's so important. I think natural talent comes in all forms. So I think the reason many drummers don't talk about relaxation is that it came very naturally to them. But I had to "work" at learning to relax. 😀Thank you for your really detailed feedback. Have a great week!

Great video - I’m grateful, like your teaching style and am so eager to learn more from you that I subscribed. I haven’t drummed widely enough to really say what drum kit I prefer - I have a few snares I like to move around my Mapex Saturn V kit, and I like my Ludwig Supralite as much as my Sonor AQ2, the Gretsch USA Custom bell brass, the N&C CD and my Ludwig Black Beauty. If I had to pick one it would probably either be the Gretsch bell brass or the N&C.

I'm so glad you find the videos helpful! I'd like to do a lot more experimenting with equipment. I have always been pretty limited financially in that regard. But I think there are some really amazing drums out there. I once tried a used Premier "Signia Series" snare drum at a drum store. It was the best sounding snare drum I've ever heard. I probably should have just bought it on the spot. :
@dumdumbrown42253 ай бұрын
@@BradAllenDrumsKansasCityYou’re pretty spot on with the financial aspect of drumming. Not cheap at all. For the first 8 years of my drumming I only had my beloved Ludwig Supralite - many laughed at it and told me I should upgrade to a Supraphonic, but I love ol’faithful to bits. Now here in the US for the first time I’m playing the Supralite without an RTOM Black hole muffler on it - and I love it! What I did realise along the way was that being a good drummer was more to do with my hands than the brand of my snare drum or kit. After saving for many years I finally did get a Black Beauty some months ago, but I haven’t even tuned it and actually tried it because I’m having so much fun learning single and double strokes on the Supralite and an AQ2. The Supralite is my fat snare with low tuning and less bounce, and the AQ2 is the medium-tuned snare with normal bounce. I totally get your perspective - if I were to do it again, I would leave the saved cash where it was and simply focus on my technique - which I’m kind of doing now… lifelong learner here!

@@dumdumbrown4225 When I first moved to Kansas City I was looking at new drum sets. One of the best jazz drummers in town told me to buy a cheap set. Said it doesn't really matter anyway. I agree. But it sure is great if you can afford amazing instruments. I had a friend in college that financed a Sonor set like he was buying a car. I think he spent $10,000. It sounded amazing. But holy crap that's a lot of money to spend unless you're playing really great paying studio jobs in Nashville, etc. 😀

Thanks for your feedback! I'd like to try some of those other drum sets. Unfortunately in Kansas City, where I live it's getting much more difficult. They recently closed "Explorer's Percussion." The owners retired. To my knowledge that' was the last actually drum store in the area. We still have Guitar Center, but they have a very limited amount of drums in stock. This is the downside of everything going online. How can I spend a bunch of money on drums or cymbals until I try them? Because they are so heavy, it's not practical to ship them to a customer and then give them the option of returning them. I suppose the best solution is probably to travel to a larger city where they still have drum specialty shops where you can play the instruments.

@BradAllenDrumsKansasCity I have a day job, and worked for most of my career in central Ca, close too Bentley's Drum Shop. I've purchased 2 kits from Dana over the years, a Ludwig USA and Gretsch USA. Got to see many clinics there as well by some of my favorite drummers. I'm in NV now, and my current kit, the Ludwig NeuSonic, I purchased from Sweetwater. I had never seen the butterscotch in person, but was very impressed with the pics,and even more so when they arrived (I picked them up at the local Fed X store). I'm going to retire in the nashville area, start studying again and playing with other musicians, and I'm sure purchase some kits from Forks. Most of the guitar centers don't have the inventory or caliber of kits that a good drum shop has !
