Do you compose in layers? Have you noticed this technique in photos before? Can you see yourself using it the next time you’re out shooting?

Layering is definitely one thing that can your photography into the next level. It was a game-changer for me when I started noticing it.

I cannot say it enough. Mitchell again provides a great service to photographers of all levels. This 15min video has more info, is more relevant to learning photography than most of the garbage out there combined. Well done and straight to the point. This is truly refreshing to watch and listen to, unlike the usual "check out my gear" or "this camera/lens vs this camera/lens" garbage. Fantastic content Mitchell. You deserve 20x the subscriptions. Oh, and your photos speak for themselves!

I think looking at great painting portraits is helpful too. You know, those wonderful lifelike portraits that were painted hundreds of years ago. It's always amazing to see what those skilled portrait artists could do back then. They often had great lighting and a great 'composition'.

Yeah, it's extra work, but it makes the video waaaay nicer. Cause human brain subconsciously makes the connection between the image and the sound, and it feels for the viewer like they are actually there. Love it. 👌

Hey Mitchell... This is another wonderful tutorial. I know it must be confusing seeing other, less thoughtful, "gear review" type videos registering such high viewing numbers. But I just wanted to say that I have watched a lot of youtube photography stuff... and I mean a lot... and you are, far and away, the best photographer and instructor I've come across. It is not even close. I'm not talking about my personal favourite. There are many youtube photo personalities that I enjoy tuning in to hear. But, in purely objective terms (as in, pedagogical content and photographic output) your uploads are in a league of their own. I know the aim of the game is ultimately hits and clicks... but sometimes high quality output just isn't made for mass clicks. Your videos take time to make but, for that same reason, they demand more time, attention and concentration from the viewer. Not everyone is really into that. Nonetheless, those youtube viewers who have followed your work on here (and, in real world teaching terms, they are actually very high numbers) have benefited far more from watching even one of your videos, than from watching hundreds of others. Anyway, I just wanted to express my own gratitude for all you've put up on your channel for free over the last long while. I hope you find the time to keep posting for many more years to come. Merry Christmas... and I look forward to seeing what exotic places you find yourself in in the New Year.

Thanks for the detailed video on layering! I’ve always generally done this as a photographer just because I like the sense of foreground elements to enhance a background, but I haven’t really seen other photographers/videos specifically on layering in composition. Something that I do think makes up an important part of a visual composition that’s interesting to look for in a story.

Thanks a lot Mitchell for another great video. I believe composing with layers is absolutely key to great storytelling. I'm going through a period of minimalistic street photography right now, as I more and more lean on removing elements from my photos rather than adding them. I think this need of decluttering might have to do with living in chaotic London, but it is what it is. What I notice is that while this leads to technically good photos and well-selling fine art, often these photos do not represent the full picture and lack depth. As inspired as I always am by your videos, I'm going to try to go back to include a bit more in the scene, to present all the characters that make a good story. The great thing about going through these phases and styles (travel, landscape, street, black and white, minimalism, storytelling, ...) is that they are all immensely valuable lessons and make me a better photographer day after day. Thanks mate!
@tubemapper4 жыл бұрын
I Agree. I'm in London too so I'm often trying to declutter. But I will purposely play with layers now if the opportunity presents itself
