One thing I wish you would do, is test the PAR levels OUTSIDE the tank, to get an idea of how much light spill there is. Every time you raise the lights for new measurements you have to be getting more and more light that ends up outside the tank, which if you have a canopy over your tank isn't a big deal, but if it's open topped it can be a very big deal.

Hey, getting into reefing. I’ve an ai hydra 26hd that I got second hand over a 60 gallon cube. What settings would I need for a soft coral/ mixed reef? I also have a dilemma with regards to height. My light is only 6 inches over the water due to the canopy. Is there any way of diffusing the light for a more even spread or should I just be building a new canopy? Thanks

Generally speaking, a reduction in PAR is less harsh on coral vs an increase in PAR. As long as you're still providing PAR levels in the necessary ranges for the specific coral types you're keeping, you'll be just fine reducing the overall intensity slightly.

My problem is my lights are in a canopy so I can only up 6-8 inches. I have 100% on blues & Uv, 6 on green & blue, 45 on whites. I think I'm frying my coral. One if my lps changed from red, green and yellow to green. Pc rainbow is turning green. What are your recommended settings for 3 hydras. 2 t5 blue in a canopy. The t5s only stay on 5 hours.
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, without measuring the PAR to make informed adjustments the best thing you can do if you feel like you're lights are too bright is to reduce them about 20%-30% and see if that improves. The best practice overall would be to borrow/rent a PAR meter and then make your adjustments so that most of your tank at points in the top/middle/bottom are somewhere around 75-150. It doesn't have to be perfect and PAR meters are super easy to use, but knowing for sure what PAR you have in your tank will pay for itself in your corals surviving rather than losing even more. :)

I just miss one thing.. I have a 60g almost cube, but near enough. I have 2 Hydra 26 HD's and spacing them that much as over that 4 footer is no option as half the lights will be outside the tank.. So Since you mentioned using more than one over a 60 for sps, a recomendation for spacing would certainly be welcome. What comes to my mind is using the spacing from 4 lights over the 4 footer , is that in the right direction.. Anyway it seems mounted the kind of really wrong now, with a height of only 8,5 inces and I did have a feeling that was a bit to low. Also I have them spaced by only 12,5 in the midle ending up 7,5 from the edge , measured from the midle of the lights, which is mounted the normal way so the pucks are placed in a row.. Any kind of thoughts on that are welcone.

You'll likely find a decent amount of light spill if you mount the light that high over an 18" tank, but if you can live with it, it'll provide your tank with great spread. Of course, if you use a par meter, you can lower the light and intensity both to meet your tank's specific needs. Just keep hat inevitable hot spot in mind (which is why we recommend using a par meter).

@Randy R. How did you come up with the spectrum you ended up with? Is it just for par output? How does it compare to the AB+ spectrum? And last which spectrum would you use over your tank!
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
When there is no direct advice from the manufacturers on what settings to use we default to making our own based on maximizing the blues/uv/violet for coral metabolic function...adding in some whites until the tank looks good...then a bit of red and green sparingly. To some degree the AB+ is similar to this approach, we've just made it universal for nearly all LEDs that have adjustable color channels. Keep your eyes out for some more in-depth videos from Ryan and I about finding that optimal spectrum mix, coming soon!

How would you adjust the levels for a mixed tank?
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
You could probably increase our recommended spectrum ratio equally across all channels to bump up the PAR in the upper portions of your tank. I would imagine that +20-30% for each channel would start to get you in those higher PAR numbers near the top of the tank. The goal here would be to create higher PAR zones near the top with pockets of lower PAR zones underneath and throughout the middle and lower parts of the tank...then strategically place your corals so the SPS is mounted up in those higher PAR zones, while the medium to lower PAR corals are in the rest of the tank. :)

I think you should do a video explaining how you all come to all of these conclusions so some of us with say a 32 G biocube can rent the par meter and setup our tanks properly. Same with a massive tank. Etc... there has to be some form of algorithm you use so we can all calculate the correct placement.
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
I think the answer lies in choosing a goal for your tank. The target PAR numbers for coral types like LPS or SPS remain the same whether you are lighting a 20gal tank or 2,000gal tank. The key is to choose what tank type suits you best and then use the PAR meter to adjust your lights accordingly.

Using our updated approach to choosing a spectrum ratio, this is what we landed on. This newer spectrum provides a bit more PAR, but remains fairly close to those who have mimicked the "AB+" settings. I wouldn't imagine that one is going to be dramatically better/worse than the other and it's very important to verify any settings with a PAR meter to be sure you have it right.

The other ab+ settings that you recommended was much higher with the uv violet and blue. I think the uv was set at 118 and violet at 115 with blues about 80. @BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, this light isn't going to be able to provide quite enough spread over a 36" wide tank. I'd suggest two of the smaller AI Primes instead of the Hydra 26 or 32 so that you can space the two pucks out a little more evenly.

Shouldn't be an issue. Just make sure to test par to make sure that lowering that channel doesn't take you out of your goal range for par.

@BRStv
@BRStv 3 жыл бұрын
The AI Prime might actually be a better choice for a 40B. Two Primes for a softie/LPS tank or three Primes for an SPS tank. If you're set on the Hydra 26, two of them will be the best option for full coverage. www.bulkreefsupply.com/prime-16-hd-led-reef-light-black-body-aqua-illumination.html

@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
For Mixed Reefs a good target is to have those higher PAR areas in the upper portions of the tank where SPS are typically placed and lower PAR in the middle and bottom for the LPS and Softies. Think of it as splitting the difference between the LPS PAR goals we aim for and the SPS PAR goals.

We didn't create one for these settings, but they should be very easy to replicate by making your settings (verified with a PAR meter) and choosing a photoperiod that works best for you and your tank. We typically use a 9hr full lighting period with a 30min ramp up and ramp down time.

Won’t that high UV burn the corals ?? Way way way to high
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
In general lighting manufacturers use a "near-UV" LED that registers around the 380 to 400 nanometer range and call the channel "UV". I personally take this at face value because the percentage of the slider is not a direct representation of the intensity in that given spectrum range. For instance, a LED module may only have 2-3 "UV" LEDs out of the entire 26/32/52/64 or more LEDs that make up the light; 100% of those two LEDs are going to be far less "intensity" than 10-20 LEDs in another spectrum range.

I cant believe it needs to be 16 inches high!! That freaking sucks and is probably a deal breaker. I have been trying to decide for weeks which lights to get and I thought maybe I iwll go with bang for the buck for the type of light I can upgrade by adding more! I dont like the look of it being so high and would it still need to be that high on a 48 inch long but using 3 or 4 and only being 18 inches wide instead of 24. I i wsh you guys did more than 24 inch wide. Thats not real common either! If you are going 48 inches seems like 75 gallon or 9o are more popular and I would never just put 2 on a tank that big. It would look ridiculous! One day soon I promise I will quit asking you guys s om any questions about lights..sorry! Most men would have figured it out in in a few hours probably! haha Radions are starting to top my list! lol I wanted to save a few hundred!
