Cutting up a long pipe into many equal pen bodies with perfect threading may sound easy...or not. But it doesn't matter, because in THIS episode John and Angelo give us some insight into what to do in order to balance your threads, and have two threaded parts come together, nice. and. flush. We're also REALLY excited because this is the second last part before pens are ready for production!!!

Typically in manufacturing if you want a nice concentric threaded fit up you use a counter bore on your female thread side and a matching raised shoulder at the end of the thread to smoothly go into the counterbore. This maintains concentricity while letting threads do what they do which is pull things together, not provide alignment.

I work for a fire fighting equipment manufacturer, so I'm very familiar with Higbee threads. We use live tooling to cut our Higbees. You don't have to, it's just easier to program and very consistent. The standard for depth is 1-1/4 threads from the end of the part so that the 2 parts mate in what is essentially a counterbore before the threads meet. Ideally, there would be a Higbee on both male and female threads. If you want a Higbee on the back side of the thread as well, you could use a woodruff/t-slot cutter for the op if you can find one small enough.

For internal threads, to be hardcore about it (and sometimes it is a customer requirement) you should also pin gage the minor diameter to make sure it is in specification. A go/no-go will tell you a thread is fine but the minor diameter may be too large, which obviously means the thread engagement is out of spec low and the thread will fail.

There is also a feature called a Higbee notch on threaded fire hose as well. It is a notch on one of the 3 spanner lugs that indicates to the firefighter quickly where the start of the thread is. So you grab the male and female couplings, line up the Higbee notch on each and they will start to thread together immediately.

If you put a nice chamfer on the front and back of the thread and a good relief on the back you can avoid a lot of the burr. Also, if you run the thread cycle, rerun the finish turn, then rerun a full depth thread pass, it will break off those burrs and leave a beautiful finish. A but more time intensive but it seems like 30 more seconds per part wouldn't be too big a deal for you guys. Nice pens though!

Because your lathe has milling you could do your blunt start with a milling tool. Its easier to setup than a grooving tool and you can do it front and back. Some kind of small carbide woodruff type of cutter would do it just fine. In fact with a small enough one you could do the ID thread.

I am late to the party just catching up on the Saga story. Having just received Saga #4406 my appreciation towards your efforts on this project continue to grow knowing how OCD and drive you and your team is on machining the absolutely best designs is mind blowing! Thanks so much for for opening the doors to your world and sharing your take on machining these bad boys! We are huge fans of your efforts. I will enjoy this writing instrument a true instrument and tool of the finest quality for daily use! Once again we can get our hans on find craftsmanship that you will never get from overseas jobs shops, just not going to happen. As much as I hate to say the Rolex of Titanium pens its something that can be stated as most instantly understand the fine details and tolerances the Rolex brand carries. Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter

Great to see more videos being uploaded. I would love to see a series for one of your knives or your pen showing the entire process from start to finish (Following the whole process of one product). Awesome stuff!

tolerances do not change while making parts... tolerance is the allowable deviation from nominal.

Galling and fretting is the biggest thing we fight in our shop. We make lots of drill rod so we have threads holding 50,000 threads being taking apart and put back together hundreds of times. Plus there always dirty and abused. Lots of our stuff gets a higbee thread, nice to hear someone call it that again lol everyone up here calls it clipping.

Why you're not finishing the second side after cutoff? You could still take the finished part out by hand. Or was this your plan in the future? Really liking the vids! 👌🏻👍🏻🙂

I just recently purchased a mori seiki sl150 which was manufactured in 1996. It is dual spindle and the previous owner used it to make pens. At this point in time I really don’t know what I will do with it.

I fully expect those 50 or 150 pens worth of parts to be scrapped. Knowing John, he'll start to do the second op, or start to assembly the pens, and he won't like something about them and he'll scrap the parts. Tell me I'm wrong. LOL. I obviously don't want that to happen, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did happen. Haha.

Or you can send the tubes for centerless grinding, they can control the surface finish a lot better, hopefully gets rid of knicks/dings on the OD, so you're not scrapping titanium....

It should, but the problem would be the thin wall tubing. Thread rollers apply a lot of pressure, and the tubing wouldn't hold up to it
