I watched all aredn videos. They are really helpful for installation . Commsprepper is the only one which guide me AREDN briefly .

Hi I dont get why you need to flash new firmware, you can do all that in default firmware? Please explain.
@cluberic3 жыл бұрын
With a directional antenna, what kinda of range can you get? Also can network data transmitted over AREDN be encrypted?

That is pretty slick. Be cool to hook an IP Doorbell cam / intercom at remote entry gates. Thanks for sharing !

Thanks, Hank. As discussed before, I have 2 of the M2s. If I put the AREDN firmware on them, is it possible to re-load the factory Ubiquity firmware at a later date? I am like you where using these units, I can essentially talk to myself. No other Hams within 15 miles, none of them are line of site and none of them understand MESH. Great info, but I would hate to brick two perfectly good radios. N7ARO
@Commsprepper6 жыл бұрын
I don't think you can go back after loading AREDN. I'm afraid to try - could brick my working units.
@DdraigX6 жыл бұрын
You should be able to re-flash them without having an "issue™."
@SignalsEverywhere6 жыл бұрын
it's doable even if you have to do it over serial but I've not tried it and you do risk a brick. If i were to reload one I'd do it over serial/TFTP. If you look up how it is done for OpenWRT it should be the same process.

I've watched about a half dozen videos like this. Can you tell me what you did in this video or the one with the VOIP phones that you couldn't have done with the stock firmware? I think it's super cool that you can turn a consumer product, off the shelf device into something that requires a license to operate but I just can't see any good purpose for doing so yet.
@Commsprepper4 жыл бұрын
dedicated radio band (no competition with the gazillion consumer products) and more power. Licensed Amateur operations permit greater power and external/high-gain antennas. There are more options but this are two good reasons.
@rehoboth_farm4 жыл бұрын
@@Commsprepper Ubiquity has devices that out of the box have a range of 300km that have external antennas. You are operating on essentially the same 2.4ghz band as ordinary WiFi as far as I can tell, not that it would matter. I can't see any obvious need for what you are doing other than 'just cuz'. There is no reason that you can't take a pair of M2's right out of the box and hook them up to VOIP phones. You can also use the same devices to view security cams right out of the box. I doubt that anything other than the obscurity factor would make your system more secure than stock firmware. Furthermore there is NOTHING preventing me from sending encrypted communications over standard wifi where it would be illegal if it is now 'a ham radio'. There are also a half dozen other firmware packages for these devices that don't require a ham license. People do everything you are talking about and more every day without needing a ham license with this same sort of hardware. It just seems like the kind of recumbent bicycle riding contrarianism that in the past has driven me to demand that my electric razor runs Linux. If you like doing things this way then good for you and I'm happy for you. Shine on you crazy diamond.

If you can make it a touch smaller and more portable you could make a battery operated field phone to run around with on property.
@Commsprepper6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Look at my video from two weeks ago - in that video I use two VoIP phones to make wireless field phones with these units.

For security purposes, is this security camera viewable to the public over public ham radio bands?
@Commsprepper5 жыл бұрын
Only if they are connected your mesh and provide the camera's password.

@@Commsprepper that would be great if you could provide a more in-depth video on how to keep stuff like this secure from public viewing.

Is this different than Broadband-Hamnet?
@Commsprepper5 жыл бұрын
Yes but similar. I may be wrong but I believe broadband-hamnet is limited to the wifi channels that are shared with Amateur radio, where AREDN covers all the spectrum assigned to the Amateur radio service.
@stevey5006 жыл бұрын
I'm not 1000% certain of the purpose of the alternate OS. What makes this amateur radio vs regular unlicensed 5 or 2.4 ghz?
@Commsprepper6 жыл бұрын
It gives you access to spectrum below the wifi channels (no interference from them) and allows for more power.

Is this legal to do? I thought we couldn’t transmit anything encrypted over the Han bands? Isn’t WiFi typically encrypted? Thanks. KM4LBW
@Commsprepper6 жыл бұрын
The AREDN firmware is strictly Amateur radio and does not encrypt traffic. The traditional WIFI encryption capabilities that ship with the unit are wiped out with the factory OS when you replace it with the AREDN firmware. Nothing is encrypted. Checkout the AREDN website for specifics.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I am not an expert on this stuff - I just started playing with it two weeks ago. However, it's very cool stuff and MESH radio networks seem to be growing. The AREDN website has a map showing where all the nodes are - there are allot.

@@Commsprepper When it applies to security cameras would you not want this to be encrypted?
@Commsprepper6 жыл бұрын
The FCC is very clear - no encryption is permitted in the Amateur Radio Service. I know there have been past efforts to allow encryption for Amateur operators when they are supporting government and medical first responders but it was not approved.
