I am in the beginning phase of building a mesh network here in Hawaii. I just installed sector antennas up on my roof today, and later in the week we will be installing a dish antenna on another hams roof about 10 miles away pointing to my sector antennas to link them together. Instead of going with AREDN we are building our system from scratch so we have more flexibility with it. I still have a lot to learn about ham radio mesh systems to get all of this set up and start linking other hams around the island into the system.

So do you have a solar panel/charger/batteries for every building/node? For instance you said every out building has a phone, but how do you power the phone and the node. As for panels, chargers, and batteries do you make any suggestions? I'm going to get up most of what you have up at our homestead in North Idaho, I want to get some Iron Edison batteries, but will probably only be able to afford on 12 v 100 ah Iron Edison battery (about $1,000 each, not including the electrolyte powder and distilled water). I will most likely also buy a few LifEPO batteries, charger, and Panasonic panels to fill the gap, all that would probably cost as much as a single Iron Edison, of course the Iron Edison batteries basically last forever without memory issues. But I wanted to see what you have found.Thanks for sharing your setup, it helps, I have other priorities currently like finishing out building our food supply which I neglected for more interesting things like radio and firearms.

My out-buildings can be powered from my main off-grid solar power systems (I also have commercial power).

I hope you don't get big wind storms there, that rain catchment system doesn't appear to be on concrete footings of any sort, rot will be the least of your worries if any wind over 50mph comes through. That's a LOT of surface area to catch the wind.

Solar and wind have been working for me for 6-7 years. I run a 220w solar, 400w turbine, feeding 6, group 31 DC batteries. 5-6 hours a day I run 2 HF bases, 2 mobiles, and 24/7 backup for security system until the 12k generator starts.

What turbine do you have? I have been looking at them but they don't seem to have good reviews.

@@Commsprepper It been s long I forgot, its still up and running. I bought it at West Marine, I thought if it can handle the saltwater environment it should last a while. It's only 400w but been holding a charge on my system, in the winter months and stormy low light days and night it helps. At first, I had it on a 40ft tower but found it works better for me/my area/yard 5 ft off my shop roof that is only 12 ft high making it 17ft from the ground and it kicks butt.
@buzzsah5 жыл бұрын
I saw a few bad reviews on others but most were " I have it 40 ft high and it never turns fast" It not always hight, its location.

Another question, what website was that with all the links to your cameras and all that. Also, can strangers access that? I ask because I would like to do the same, but I don't want it public, which is one reason I've stayed away from ARDEN.
@Commsprepper5 жыл бұрын
arednmesh dot org. Your AREDN nodes are not/not private and are open to all Amateur radio operators (that's the nature of the Amateur radio service).
@Devin82m5 жыл бұрын
OK, yeah, that's what I thought being a ham myself. So why bother? I mean you can setup a standard WiFi mesh network using line of site directional antennas at the same frequencies and it will be private. Not to mention there are mesh network projects out there with firmware for radios. I would rather setup something more private, but similar to your design.
@daa34174 жыл бұрын
Devin82m Your solution requires the internet to remotely access the ‘retreat’, ARDEN works independently of the internet if need be. So no mater the condition of internet service at the retreat or locally where he is, those services can still be used. When you think about it all the actual control functions are behind a password and all someone could do is see some readings not a huge security risk. On the issue of security what most people do is NOT security, just hop on shodan and try stuff with the default credentials it’s SCARY how often people simply do not change these things, the setup shown in this video is much more secure than that...
