Aren't basket interference and goaltending the same thing? Well, let's talk it out.

This is another Rule Review segment covering plays involving basket interference or goaltending situations. This video is dedicated to educating basketball officials on the proper way to look at basket interference and goaltending plays, including the four attributes that MUST be present to qualify as goaltending. Watching actual videos of basket interference and goaltending plays helps officials learn faster and retain rule information better. We can all learn together by continually discussing the rules as they are written pertaining to basket interference and goaltending restrictions and reinforce those rules by applying them to actual high school basketball videos.
In this segment of Rule Review, the three basket interference and one goaltending video clips we reference are all high school games and involve different aspects to improving your ability to successfully recognize if a play indeed had an illegal act that should be rules as basket interference or goaltending.
Video #1
- After a missed shot, a ball is tipped in by a teammate however, since the ball was still within the cylinder when it was touched, it becomes basket interference. It is noted that only 1% of the ball needs to be within the cylinder to qualify for this basket interference restriction.
Video #2
- Another missed shot and another tip back but this time the official incorrectly calls a basket interference violation. The reason this play is not a basket interference violation is because the ball is below the ring, which is the reference point for the base of they cylinder, and therefore cannot be considered "within the cylinder."
Video #3
- A layup is attempted and blocked by the defender, but the officials missed the defender reaching through the basket to get to the ball. So, even though the ball is not within the cylinder, it is still basket interference since a player may not reach through the basket from below and touch the ball.
Video #4
- Another blocked shot on this play keeping the home team from scoring. But when evaluated on the four factors that qualify a goaltend it proves to actually be a goaltend. The four factors are, 1) It must be a try for a goal. 2) The ball must be on its downward flight. 3) The ball must be entirely above the ring. 4) It must have a legitimate chance of entering the basket.
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but true education and learning can more effectively be attained when each video is annotated with diagrams and shading to point out key teaching points. Taking away and remembering specifics on a rule such as basket interference and goaltending is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and the Rule Review segment, creates videos that don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.

Really well done explanation. Most people assume you can’t alter a layup once it hits the backboard, but the hinge is if it is on the way down or up, no backboard contact. UNLESS it’s the NBA. If the NBA, you can’t touch the ball once it touches the backboard, hence why Lebron’s defensive stop in the Finals pinning Igoudala’s layup was so dang impressive

It would be helpful if you also mentioned that the ball touching the backboard first does not apply for goaltending in NFHS like it does in NBA and NCAA, if the ball is still in upward flight. Many coaches and players incorrectly interpret this rule. Good video!

Is it considered basket interference when a defensive player accidentally slaps the backboard on a during a shot? Does the ball have to be within the basket rim? I’m trying to understand the rule thanks!

Slapping the backboard accidentally is not basket interference. You may find many that will call it that way but, by rule, if the official does not rule the slap to be intentional, than it is to be ignored. Thanks for watching.

Just an honest question. Why is the rule applied to both teams? I can understand that goal tending can be called on the defensive team because the act may saboutage the scorinh chance of the offensive but why would it be applied to the offensive team as well when the goal of the offensive team is to make a basket? Is it because it is already considered a lose ball when the ball was released?

You wouldn't see goaltending by an offensive player, but you could see basket interference. Why? Because if you allow the offense to touch the ball while it is on or above the basket, and not the defense, wouldn't that give them an unfair advantage?

What if your teammate was tap your shoot like in first video is there any score?

Any contact on the ball within the imaginary cylinder is considered basket interference, regardless of a tap or try. If it's from a teammate of the offensive team, no basket and ball goes to defense. If it's a defender touching it, score two points and ball goes to defense. Make sense?

If the ball is on “touching” this ring, and any part of the basket it touches (ring, flange, net) it should be ruled as basket interference. If the ball is above the basket, not touching, touching the ring, or any part of the basket is not basket interference.

For a shot to be goaltending, it has to be "entirely above the basket ring"? That's absurd. If it's on its downward trajectory, going toward the basket, but not yet above the cylinder, you can legally block it? Uh...something's wrong with this picture.

That is correct. If the ball is on a downward trajectory and is below the ring, it is physically impossible for it to change direction and back up and into the basket
