Thanks for this! This takes me back to my childhood. It is sad that there are generations that will never know the Queen as those of us who experienced her greatness in its purity. Richard Tee on the organ, and Pancho Morales on the conga; some of the greatest musicians of a by gone era. I watched this 7 times. I remembered this. Thanks, for such a great memory.

She made this appearance on Room 222 on the same trip to LA/Hollywood in which she made the recording of her "best selling" gospel album, which is now a movie in "limited theaters" now, it was supposed to be made into a movie back then, but apparently there were "technical difficulties" involved. It was worth the wait though...Aretha appeared so "authentic" and "genuine" in the recording/movie.

@dartord I believe that's Richard Tee on the organ, Bernard Purdie playing the bongos and probably Cornell Dupree on guitar and Chuck Rainey on bass. These were the guys playing on her records in the early seventies including Amazing Grace and Young, Gifted and Black. They might have been in LA recording Amazing when they taped this. This is Aretha at the top of her game!

@TheQueenAretha Whitney was not better than her mother. And Whitney's mother was just about good enough to sing backing for Aretha. Anyway, I have an interview clip in which Whitney states Aretha's the best. And my guess is that was even before she got her habit. Whoever thinks Whitney's any better than Aretha does not know history and/or has a serious hearing impediment.

I'm an Aretha fan as well. I don't classify singers better than the others. I just simply say that their singing styles are different. Remember it's the Lord who creates and gives us our gifts. God himself likes variety whether we're in agreement or not. It is the Lord whose to be praised no matter whose singing the songs. Amen!

I don't understand this flame war about subjective views. These things cannot be determined categorically. For example, mere musical skill does not necessarily make a good singer - Mariah Carey, for example? I don't believe a word she sings, which, to me, anyway, makes her FOR ME not a good singer.
