The Queen of Soul collaborated with Luther Vandross on this fun, soulful and jazzy number. Smooth as silk. RIP Queen of Soul. The incomparable Miss Aretha Franklin.

Marcus Miller, bassist and co-writer of this tune, on how it came to be written for Aretha: [Marcus Miller] - Luther called me and asked me to come up with some tracks, and up until that point I hadn’t done much R&B songwriting. I played on a lot of R&B records, but I was more into jazz and jazz fusion. So I told Luther, “I’m more of a fusion guy, man.” And he said to me, “Shut up, man. Quit throwing labels at me, you know what I need!” I sent him a cassette tape of the track that would become “Jump To It,” and he wrote it for Aretha. Then he called me and said, “Hey man, you know that Porsche you wanted that we joke about? Order it.” I asked him why and he goes, “I just wrote the first verse for this song for Aretha using the track you sent me, and it’s going to be a smash.” Then he calls me right back and says, “Make it blue with a brown interior, I just wrote the second verse.” He kept calling me every 20 minutes as he was writing the lyrics and the melody to “Jump To It.”

Ok, I was 7 years old and I remember my mom played this song alot when this was released, also songs like, STONE LOVE by Kashif, MS GOT-THE-BODY by ConFunShun & FALL IN LOVE WITH ME by Earth, Wind & Fire. I'm 47 years old, I grew up with good music and the new sounds of hip-hop, I used to sing-a-long the Between the Sheets album and the Thriller album, I was SOOO young.... oh yeah.... every Saturday afternoon, Soul Train (new episodes). Can't forget Zapp, the 80s R&B,Funk, Soul even Pop was fire the, now music is all about the 🚽 (who can get the most flushest?) Oh-my-goodness, I'ved witness the links to how we got here in today's music. ☹️

Out of Aretha's 80s catalogue I feel the Luther produced albums Jump To It and Get It Right are overlooked as opposed to Who's Zooming Who and the 1986 self titled albums.

Perhaps not 'overlooked', but did not have the same cross-over Pop appeal that the Narada Walden produced ones had. I enjoy them both as great examples of 80s R&B (with a fusion jazzy flavour here and there). These albums also spotlight Aretha's lower register quite nicely. And then there's the Luther/Marcus/Nat Adderley Jnr. touch.
