Thank you for uploading this. I remember when it aired in November, 1980, shortly after her first Arista Album ("Aretha") and a few months after the Blues Brothers movie.

I train myself to sing by listening to Aretha. Her family is from the same land in Mississippi my family is from. I have to stop myself from thinking I have her voice bc it shares so many similarities. We also both lived in Memphis which def has its own sound . NVL I thank you for posting this. You’ve given me a week worth of practice material 🙏🏾❤️ lol

I love her so much class and style i was thinking about how blues was mixed with gospel she simply put the words together because that's the first thing i heard when i the blues except the lyrics are more depressing in my life as being a person who sings gospel music the other side is a bluessy experience lol i love this lady frfr

Aretha had such a beautiful speaking voice. Such an interesting and intelligent woman. This show was a bit scripted but she tells no lies. Aretha was always authentic to her own truth and beliefs. When speaking AND singing.

Didn’t big mama Thornton sing with her on this program?
@musicloveranthony4 ай бұрын
Yes she did
@sashineb.21144 ай бұрын
Yes, and it may have been Big Mama's last performance, as she died a short while after due to illness. She didn't look too well when she was singing, sad to say.

Wondering whats american indians are saying about culutural appropriation here
@sibun71534 ай бұрын
I think it is a Bandeaus. An homage to 20s fashion.

Please google “Speakesy” or “Gatsby” fashion.
@nycp19694 ай бұрын
This is not an American Indian fashion. It’s a 1920s flapper look. This was during a period when Aretha was influenced by Diana Ross’s visual and performance style. Diana often wore costumes that referenced past styles, sometimes subtly, other times explicitly.
@sibun71534 ай бұрын
@@nycp1969 Or....now hear me out...maybe it was because she was doing a blues song from that era. Trouble In Mind was written in the 20s.
@nycp19694 ай бұрын
@@sibun7153Right. And Diana did a lot of period costumery back then. Aretha went through a period when she did a very Diana style glamour. I’ve read references to this by music journalists. Nothing on Aretha to notice another artist’s influence. Diana certainly admired and was influenced by Aretha too.

I have never seen this much passion in a singer. Aretha is the most persuasive singer I have ever heard, and to me, that sense of confidence but not too close to Aretha only Chaka and Teena Marie had
