@@morrisanderson3180 Agreed 100%...plus Simeone's original foul upon Beckham that led to the retaliation was a massive whack FROM BEHIND, FFS!! Yeah, a real hardman, that Simeone & hardly the "star of this victory", as the original moron above described him so ridiculously! Yeah, he suckered a petulant & naive young lad into doing something stupid & rash & that had him sent off...but if that qualifies someone as the "star of this victory", then a certain someone knows NOTHING about football, class or sportsmanship...utterly pathetic, IMO. And I'm an Aussie Arsenal FC nut who was working at a pub in W2 London (left my GF of 8 years to spend 6 months in the UK in '98, to finally a) watch Arsenal play at Highbury - & when we were trailing United by 13 points in the EPL on the day that I arrived in March, then we won the 'Double', going top of the table after we defeated Wimbledon 5-0 in my first game at beautiful old Fortress Highbury & b) see New Order play live at Reading, 2 days prior to my flight home!) when this game was actually playing...so I've certainly no allegiance to England, nor bias in favour of Beckham, when my Gunners had just beaten him & Fergie's other United lads to win the EPL/FA Cup 'Double' during the 97/98 season...but the vitriol that Becks copped from both the media & the mindless meatheads was utterly disgusting

Of course Beckham is a very nice guy and a gentleman. I also know how painful that defeat was. But it is clear that it was Beckham who ruined that game and stopped England in the last 16 of that tournament.

The first half was scintillating. It was pity that the balance was broken with that red card. I still find it a bit too harsh.

I don't know why Beckham acts like a victim. He broke the team's concentration in the camp and ruined the game with his lack of discipline in the important game. He always blames Glenn Hoddle, who was a young and promising manager, but lost much of his career because of this defeat. Beckham made Hoddle look like a petty person. The real victim was Hoddle.

Жаль, что тот матч англичане незаслуженно проиграли. Судья был не прав не засчитав 3 гол англичан и не назначив пенальти в ворота аргентинцев за игру рукой. Хотя о чем говорить "руку марадоны" никто и никогда не забудет. Кстати тогда тоже пострадали англичане.

Please watch the full match before asserting that the British "undeservedly" lost the match. Fine if you're an English fan, but you judge like if you were neutral and you are not. I was there that day, watched the full match and I can tell you the Referee was pushing back the Argentine team during the whole match, especially after he had to show red card to David Beckham. He felt that somehow, because it is "England", a European team.. he had to somehow make it up, as if Argentina wouldn't deserve to win a match. And if you were really neutral, you would understand what I am talking about ..

Eh? Beckham literally deliberately kicked him off the ball in front of the referee. Under the rules that's a red card no question.

@@andrewomahony9260 So if you kick a player off the ball when it's not in play but apparently are not trying to injure him it's fine? Read the rules. Aiming to "injure" someone isn't relevant. If you deliberately kick it try to kick an opponent - particularly here when play wasn't in action - it's a red card as it's violent conduct. The rules state you don't even need to make contact. The fact you call the game "soccer" suggests you're American in which case I'm not surprised you don't know the rules. No one at the time objected, including beckham. All the commentators, beckham and his team mates all said it was a stupid thing to do. He lost his temper, he lashed out, it was a deliberate attempt to kick an opponent and the rules are clear. He also did it under the referee's nose which was particularly stupid.
