The ref was very well balanced throughout the whole match. The foul on Di Maria WAS a penalty. It doesn't matter if it was a hard or soft foul, it was a foul. There are several things that go into determining whether a foul is a foul (and with the consideration of a perfect world).

Pedro Pinzon.

I think the referree did an outstanding job in this match. Di Maria penalty was a soft foul but a foul nonetheless. He gets clipped from behind by Dembele. First penalty on France was also the correct decision as the french player was through on goal and the argentine defender brings him down deliberately. The handball penalty was clear as well as his arm was not stuck to his body and had he not blocked it, the ball would have went past him and possibly could've been a goal. The Thuram penalty is a little harder to determine but once again the referee made the right call. As Thuram approached the defender and saw that he had extended his leg out he saw a golden opportunity to try and get a penalty but the defender with quick reactions pulled his leg back just in time to avoid tripping Thuram but Thuram had already commited himself to get the foul so he dives in an effort to get the foul called but good job on the referree for seeing it.

This ref was way better than some of the prior refs. The first penalty, for Argentina, was the softest of fouls and dubious. He also stopped a fast French counter attack towards the end of the match to give a yellow card to an Argentinian player for a foul. Should have given advantage instead and done the booking later. Other than that, he was way better than the refs in England-France, Argentina-Holland, the ref who killed Croatia in the semi final etc.
@PaulSpacey

good comment. First penalty was definitely soft but still a foul based on the contact and position Dembele was in (behind Di Maria). This video is wrong about the first penalty given to Di Maria. If you compare to the Thuram foul, it is an equivalent situation in which Enzo removes his leg, but Dembele's foot was fully planted on the ground before it made contact with Di Maria's foot, therefore it was also not a penalty b/c there was nothing Dembele could've done to move his foot while running, so the foul was not intentional. It was just an accidental contact that happened as a result of the play/defensive effort. How is it Dembele's fault that Di Maria's foot gets caught by his foot when it's not even moving at the point? That's just part the game. You're running next to or behind someone to keep up, and their foot hits your leg as you're running. That's not a foul. It would've been a foul if Dembele tried to intercept the ball as Di Maria's dribbling, failed, and instead clipped Di Maria in the process. That would've been a foul. Thuram was not a foul, but neither was Di Maria's. Sorry. Some people who say that this World cup favored Messi are not completely wrong. There was a clear bias toward Argentina.
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey 10 ай бұрын
The BIG differing factor between both incidents is that Dembele was BEHIND Di Maria. It was impossible for him to get to the ball without touching/fouling Di Maria. He was careless and foolish in his actions. This is not debatable. Contact is part of the game, having played for 20 years I agree on that BUT if you make contact from behind without touching the ball, you are at high risk of giving a foul away, even if your touch on the opponent is minimal.

No, we don't agree. There is a rule about "exploiting a slight contact to earn a foul/PK" and it is punishable with a yellow. DiMaria's PK had only a single point of contact and it was very slight. The Argentinian took advantage of it. He should have been booked. Also, all the French players raise their hands to say the opponent is flopping. What the actual fuck did you see? They were making the "go fuck yourself and get up!" motion! And there is also the fact that Argentina's goalkeeper left the goal-line to make a save in the PK shootout and the referee didn't order a repeat and didn't book the keeper!

0:32 Whether or not French players raised their hands doesn't matter; ultimately the play itself has to be examined standalone. It is foolish for the referee to assume that just because they raise their hands it implies guilt of a fault being done; also the referee could also conclude that because they raise their hands that means that it is not a foul, because four or five people agree with each other. Di Maria's penalty was not a penalty. He cheated, he dived, he acted. The penalty of France was more convincing but still the French player acted too a bit. Probably not a penalty too.

Otamendi should be given a red card for his tackle, period, it was a clear contact and from behind where there was no one between goal keeper and striker, clearly obstructing goal. Other decisions could have been different if VAR was involved instead of Referee making an instant decision, even VAR confirmed they wouldn't have given a penalty for Di Maria's dive if they would have been referred without referee giving the penalty. They need clear evidence to over turn Referee's decision which wasn't there but they didn't have a clear evidence of any contact as well. Messi was clearly offside and faking the play which should be considered as it confuses defenders. Even the image clearly shows the finger was offside for the last pass but now officials are not using finger and arm as offside when it was used for each and every offside decision in this world cup. Thuram dive, you can argue it wasn't a foul, which it was IMHO, but Referee pulled out the yellow card as fast as possible to avoid any VAR intervention. Anyway, happy that Messi won but would have been happier if this world cup was `Fair Play` and the fair team would have won the world cup. Feels like this world cup was written Messi all over even before the knock out stage started. Argentina started their last 3 match with 1-0 lead before coming out of dressing room. PS: It's really strange that FIFA has 10K Camera's & sensors inside the ball to check if Ronaldo's hair touched the ball or not, but they don't have much Camera angles to check an obvious Dembele and Thuram's foul.

I find it funny no one seem to realise that dembele planted his foot already and it worked fine until Di Maria kicked dembeles leg. Dembele can absolutely be there and if his leg was going into Di Maria then that is a whole different situation. Leg was not hitting Di Maria on the way to being put on the ground. Di Maria causes the contact. Also you just assume the defenders raise their hands because they think it’s a penalty which is ridiculous. Obviously if someone goes down in the box during a WC final you want to influence the ref of decisions no matter if it’s a pen or not. Same thing they do to win some throw ins. The referee stopped the advantage play of Coman when Acuna did a double foul by bringing down the player and then kicking the ball away. McAllister literally handballed a Thuram header. Bravo...on this very biased video. 💀

Excellent video I could understand people believing there was preference for Messi (and by the same logic also for France) getting to finals but the idea of a "rigged" cup is just conspiracy crazies doing a number on us No one with at least some understanding of the complexities of an event like the WC (or a 22 people sport like football) could even fathom such outlandish idea. Even less if you considered it was somehow all risked by two French pens and a penalty shootout. The attitude of people with this mindset is mental and only gives away two things: 1. They don't understand football nor event organization 2. They're bizarrely biased against Argentina Also, don't people find it weird that FIFA didn't gave the cup as early as 2014 to Messi? But sure, they care so much for him and for his career to fix a 3-3 game, but not a 1-0 one Wtf is wrong with these people

I feel like what some people fail to realize was that the Montiel penalty SHOULDN'T have been given. Yes, he stuck his arm out, but if you watch the corner beforehand, you can clearly see that Upamecano sticks his hand up and the ball falls to Mbappe afterwards. By that logic the play should have been blown dead, Upamecano should have gotten a yellow card, and Argentina awarded a free kick

This game was extremely fair, ref called "questionable" penalties for both Argentina and France, but for current FIFA and VAR rules there was just enough contact to be a fair penalty. France wanted Messi's goal for 3-2 canceled, why? Cause 2 of the French players were on the pitch while Argentina was about to score, they didnt help Argentina score so why would goal be disallowed? If it were Argentine players maybe its okay to cancel the goal but... What if those 2 French players came into pitch intentionally so the refs stop the game and Argentina lose their chance for goal? Im 99% sure French players knew rules about that and they did it intentionally hoping that refs would stop the attack (or cancel the goal)...

Short answer : Yes, it could have been.
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
If the ref had awarded a red card, it likely wouldn’t be overturned by VAR but in that situation a red is not warranted. If the defender attempts to play the ball (which Otamendi does with his leg even though it’s a foul), the referee shouldn’t send him off in accordance with the laws and guidance. It changed a year or so ago to remove the double punishment of penalty and red card if a defender is trying to play the ball.

Di Maria created the contact first with his left foot going forward and hitting Demueles leg. Then he started falling downward immediately and smaller contact was made as he was already falling down. Simulation and yellow card if VAR is used. Whats the point of VAR is they aren’t going to use it. Oh yeah they didn’t use it on any of Argentinas penalties. And yes I’m a certified ref. FIFA corruption at its finest.
@PaulSpacey
@PaulSpacey Жыл бұрын
Doesn’t matter if you’re a certified ref; this game is all about opinions, you know that. VAR will only intervene if ref has made a clear and obvious error; in this case they determined he hadn’t made an error. Soft penalty, minimal contact but it’s still a foul IMO.

@@PaulSpacey if you can’t tell who created the contact it need to go to VAR. A very good analysis on why people should accept FIFA awarding Argentina a free Mickey Mouse World Cup. It’s funny Messi ended up at PSG before the World Cup at Qatar. Easy way to script a World Cup buddy. Their entire emphasis on play was not to deceive the ref. Argentina, Portugal, France, and even Brazil all they did was try to create simulated fouls in the box while playing the game. The point of VAR was to stop that. They didn’t even use it. They used it for every single goal scored by Argentina in their first game and then decided not use again. Specially for penalties.
