when they had control of the game (france until minute 80, netherlands until minute 80, croatia whole game) it was really a marvel to look at. they utterly suffocated the opponent, were so so eager to intercept balls, pressed and ran after balls like madmen. all while still being so so so technically confident and gifted on offense. this team is the PERFECT combination of mastering the craft of football PLUS resoluteness and sheer WILL to fight for every inch of the pitch. you rarely see the both combined especially in national teams. the only thing that almost cost them big time was the sudden loss of concentration at the end of already controlled games. other than that this is the best performance i have seen on any level when it comes to leaving everything on the pitch.

@christiantarnoski1231 Жыл бұрын
The greatest issue was the loss of Lo Celso before the World Cup, as he made the entire lineup work: Lautaro Martinez, Paredes, De Paul, all of them suffered from his loss as they worked extremly well wich each other. Lautaro was a special case: while he was the top scorer in the Scaloni cycle, without Lo Celso and the defeat against Saudi Arabia he lost his position in the starting lineup, replaced by Julian Alvarez. Argentina had to, almost literally, create an entire new playstyle for itself during the world cup by giving a chance to new players: Enzo Fernandez and Alexis MacAlister ended up beign revelations; meanwhile, Julian Alvarez showed why Guardiola was so desperate to have him.

Its quite simple really. Scaloni put out a team revolving around playing for each other. All previous managers since post 2006 (Arguably one of Argentinas best teams) opted for their "favorites" or simply just attackers/Messi to win the game. Scaloni actually picked an objective, well balanced team in which Messi was involved. I've said it for years. No matter how good an individual is, he cannot beat a team game. Messi's shortcomings for the National side has always been the failure of the Manager to provide the platform.

"Messi's shortcomings for the National side has always been the failure of the Manager to provide the platform." - I mean, Argentina played in 2 World Cup finals and 3 Copa America finals with Messi, winning 2 of them. If Higuain, Messi, or Palacios score their respective chances in the 2014 WC final, or Argentina have good luck or take better penalty kicks in the 2015 and 2016 Copa America penalty shootouts, then I don't think you would be saying that. Argentina were literally 2 penalty shootouts and a Higuain, Messi, or Palacios missed goalscoring chance from having 2 World Cups and 3 Copa Americas.
@arvindkugan9667 Жыл бұрын
Nah Argentina played 2016 Copa america really well and messi was God level that tournament. 2022 WC was still dependent on messi (not compared to previous tournaments )and one bad performance from him would've ended Argentina's dreams. In Argentina Scaloni had to win people's trust in his process one game at a time. The move to make him head coach was critizised and doubted by basically every single journalist in the country. In the end, his lack of experience is what made him a great coach for the national team. Before him, Argentina would hire some really experienced coach with lots of years and titles on the club level under his belt. And then the National Team didn't quite adapt completely to whatever system that guy was trying to implement, and sometimes there were even clashes with the coach and some players and it would result in really great players not being capped for the National Team because the coach didn't want them around, or the player refusing to play under that coach because they didn't want to be around them either. Scaloni had no ego, no previous established style of play. He adapted himself to the players instead of asking the players to adapt to him. And it worked perfectly as we all saw.

The thing is that historically Argentinean teams have been selected by merely writing down the names of the 22 best players, politics, and whoever the coach is buddies with (and the coaches historically took the spotlight). There’s been historic corruption in the system. This was the first time something different was tried and an approach more akin to a U.S. national team selection process (for any sport): there were actual tryouts. Scaloni’s approach wasn’t to find the best individual players but rather the best team players, and even chemistry was considered. That’s why there was so much youth on this team- because they were more eager to play as a team and mold to what was needed of them. And why also there was no internal drama: Scaloni didn’t want the spotlight, Messi was the captain, and nobody in the group had an ego, the latter a staple of too many past Argentinean players. This is a long way to say that though there were some mental breakdowns or errors, the members of this team were the best for the job (save for three who dropped before the tournament due to injuries or health issues). Unorthodox for Argentina but clearly effective. And for the first time, and as evidenced by his play and attitude, Messi was happy in the system. In too many national teams before egos and poor tactics meant he wasn’t being used properly, and clearly this time he was.

Excellent analysis! My thoughts on Argentina world cup victory include: 1. The importance of tactical flexibility by Scaloni. 5-3-2 versus the Dutch to stifle thw width of wingbacks of Dumfries and Blind. Overload the middle 3 CBs for Gakpo, Depay and Bergwijn. Croatia Scaloni focused on having 4 midfield vs Modric, Kovacic and Brozovic. 4-3-3 versus France to press each midfielder and allow the width from Di Maria to attack the left flank. 2. Stability in the Spine of the team Emi Martinez, Otamendi, Romero, De Paul, Enzo, Macallister. Enzo in particular was outstanding stabilising force and tackling and passing and should be in the team of the tournament. Macallister was another revelation filling in for Lo Celso he was mecurial on the ball and scored also. 3 High Pressing from Julian Alvarez was essential to turnovers i.e goal versus Australia 4 Team mindset of commitment, dedication and absolute faith in the common goal and team purpose. Even when losing leads vs Dutch and France the resolve to continue fighting for the win and not fold under pressure, infighting or blaming was outstanding. 5 The brilliance of Messi, floating into half spaces, switching of flanks, incisive final passes for the Molina goal, flick on to Alvarez in the counter attack goal and dribbling mastery against top young defender Gvardiol. Clinical with penalties even under immense pressure. Maturity and vocal leadership whereas previous WCs he may shy away or drop his head in frustration. Also to consider that Scaloni played this whole world cup with different tactics. 4-2-4. 4-5-1 with a diamond in the middle, 4-1-2-1-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2. I guess Deschamps didnt have a clue as to what formation they'd start with. Good trick of Scaloni telling the press he was trying a back 3/ back 5, for the whole week and then coming out with a 4-3-3 zonal man oriented with Di Maria in the left. Deschamps had to fix the whole thing while the match was going on. *vamos argentina*

@@florese848 That's true. But De Paulo and Alvarez hadn't really been making mistakes until they got really tired and as a result Argentina were really ropey and leggy in the last 15-20 minutes of the second half. Scaloni is a genius, and Argentina's performance during a good 70-75 minutes was crushing, thanks to truly deep understanding of France's weaknesses and Argentina's strengths. But in the final minutes of regular time he screwed up by missing the timing on the substitutions. There were several players that needed to be subbed out at about minute 75. You could visibly tell the team was running out of steam, especially in the midfield. That resulted in two major mistakes in defense that allowed the french to tie the game within 2 minutes.
@nicolaszan1845 Жыл бұрын
I like to think that the missed timing is due to Scaloni's inexperience as a coach, and will get better with age as he plays more and more matches with Argentina. Given many of the young players the country has (Alvarez, Fernández, Macallister, Garnacho, etc.) they have a bright future ahead if helmed by Scaloni.

Here are the words of an Argentine, the content you make is fantastic. Argentina has definitely built a solid team that knows what it wants and has a lot of ambition to win. His philosophy, which Scaloni has said many times, is to go step by step and not anticipate events, that's how we ended up in the final "without knowing it." The work and wear and tear that the Argentine players do is worth admiring, they play for the shirt and with their hearts. Beyond the players, who have done an incredible job, most of the credit goes to Scaloni and his coaching staff, from setting up the team to the smallest tactical decisions, they have succeeded in almost everything. Thank you for capturing Argentine work in your content, this is worth gold.

Scaloni have Aimar & Walter Samuel on his side. Not to mention field assistant, Roberto Ayala. All of them came from the wing of one of the best youth soccer coaches in the world, José Pekerman, who made Messi's debut. At that time (2006) Ayala & Samuel were playing for the first team. Pekerman was 3 times Champion and 1 sub champion in JJOO U20. He made the debut of legends such as tevez, agüero, di maria, etc. What I mean is that there is a lot of soccer in their heads, they are tactically studious and recognize which players are top undervalued (Mcallister, Enzo Fernandez, Molina).

When the clock hit 60 minutes you could notice Alvarez, Di Maria and De Paul couldn't keep pressing like before and rightfully so, Alvarez and De Paul run like madmen all World Cup long and Di Maria was coming from an injury and he is far past his youth so they both were exhausted. The problem with Acuña subbing for Di Maria is that if he gets the ball, France isn't scared and if France isn't scared they won't bother to waste men covering the left side because 1 single player on that side of the field is enough to neutralize any offensive coming from Acuña's feet and if France only covers the argentinian right side suddenly Argentina has only 2 threats offensively, but Messi doesn't have the space necessary to open a play and Alvarez will be doubled so France gain confidence and momentum. While watching I was praying for Alvarez-Di Maria-De Paul to be subbed for Lautaro-Dybala-Paredes, because defensively a fresh Paredes will be more of a problem than a tired De Paul while not changing much offensively, he just needed to act as a middle man between the defense and Messi/Enzo Fernandez, on the other hand ofc Lautaro didn't have a good WC run but he was fresh enough to press high on every possession, which was what Argentina desperately needed and Dybala almost never played before and isn't naturally a LW but was the only player on the bench which could compete with Di Maria as an attacking threat (maybe a case could be made for el Papu Gomez). Ofc this is just my humble opinion and could have meant Argentina losing 4-2, after all I'm sure there's a reason I'm not a manager for a WC finalist, but these are my 2 cents on the subject.

France never seem to have a game plan, they just allow the other team to do what they want, and usually manage to win with counterattacks.
@mykhailoskachkov5946 Жыл бұрын
If you re-watch the 2018 game you would see that France only had one good positional attack in a whole game. All the danger they provided was from counter attacks. Basically this is how Deschamps always play. He just relies on his squad as they are the strongest team (on a paper). The same way they won the 2018 wc - all 11 players are sitting in defence and do counter attacks. The absolutely same way they played in this wc as well. I wonder why people praise Deschamps, he is very poor coach and tactician. This time in the final he played exactly the same way as in 2018 1/8. Basically this is the way he always plays! It is like "we will win because we just have better players" approach. Scaloni instead did his homework and completely outplayed Deschamps. Argentina had limited resources and several unfit players so they eventually went to the risk time. But for resources they had they played fantastic game. Mark my words - France will never win a tournament anymore under Deschamps. Everyone now have read him and know how to play against them. On this WC England and Morocco also did well against France. I expect on nearest Euro France to become a biggest flop if Didier stays.
@eodis1644 Жыл бұрын
France just shines because of a few individuals. If you look back at England - France and France - Morroco the team was almost never in control of the game, these could have easily been losses. As opposed to 2018 where they had a similar playstyle but a much better control. It's not new and it started at the Euro. This is due to various factors, a lot of injured/absent players, internal conflicts (for instance Benzema was sent home for shady reasons, he could have played after group stage) and Deschamps has been completely lost imo the last few years. He has a very questionnable player pick especially for subs and sides where he tends to use central backs. This is why a lot of people are advocating for a change and Zidane, sadly the french federation will probably extend his contract because he reached the final.

Nobody plays for themselves, they all play for and with each other. Having so many young players has showed a lot of benefits for the team both inside and outside the games. There's no egos (which is something we've always really struggled to control), nobody has their own rigid structural way of playing their position so everyone is way more flexible when they need to, and this even goes to the coaching staff. Listening to Scaloni since their second game as a coach talk about long term process and be willing to lose at the time (he tied, but whatever) in order to win later, being able to refresh the roster of veteran players we kept trying and failing with, has been a pleasure for most of us. I'm no analyst whatsoever but here's what i think of this mad match. Many have already said it's the greatest football match and i feel the same for it. The similarity is both Mbappe and Messi doesn't do much for defending yet they are the key player for each team. Almost every attacking play is through them. France were shocked for the first half and half of the 2nd half. They didn't really play a team game. They relied on few pacey technical players and it almost worked. But Argentina played a World Cup final as a team from the first minute. Dibu showed why he right now is one of the best goalkeepers, especially in penalties. The defense and midfield were tight, leaving not much room for France. Lloris should've been subbed for the pens. Im glad it happened the way it did. Finally Football gives it's Messiah his well deserved gift. A perfect way to end a glorious GOAT career. He was The Undisputed GOAT for a decade to me. This was just a sweet fairytale ending. At 35 years old, he's still one of the best to kick a ball. Insane levels only achievable by someone like him. And we will never ever see someone like him on and off the pitch again. Still riding the high of this win. Seeing him be so happy completes me. Strange? Not really if you're me. He has given me so much happiness for 15 years. This time, it's for him to enioy it. Gracias Leo.

Your analysis was great. There's no doubt on Messi, Di Maria, Scaloni and Martinez. But other things happen besides what we could see in the pitch. Let's start with the team. They were super close, they were like BFF. An other important factor I think it was that they had for the first time all their ppl and journalists talking about how good they were. If you see an Argentine narrator, every mistake they made, they said: things can happen. No one was questioning them back home. They had a big support from their country and actually all around the world. At this point it's fair to say that all around the world ppl was cheering to Argentina, every person wanted Messi to win the cup. They had an extremely hard conviction, the team players wanted to win the cup not for themselves, but for Messi and their country. My point is, no matter how good players you have on a team. The unity between them, the conviction, the willing and the extremely big support they got were a big deal to this team. In past world cups they had better players along with Messi, but they didn't have all the other stuff. A shut out to everyone who supported Argentina. This was one of my happiest day in my life. Loco, somos campeones! And yes, of course I'm from Argentina, and this team gave us so much happiness. Tbh we are still happy and no one is thinking about our politics, social and economic problems. Let me tell you, I partied like 12 hours non stop. Thank you so much for the support we had even from countries that usually are our fotbol nemesis. And again... somos campeones!!!!! Lio es campeón! Y obvio: que miras bobo. Anda pa'lla. So f proud of my team. They did not only bring us happiness, but unity, things that we are not used to.

My friend is a big Messi fan and when the WC started he asked me what team I'm cheering for (our own nation Sweden didn't make it). So I said Argentina and he was like "Yeah, wouldn't it be nice for Messi to win". And I told him: "Yes, but the main reason I'm cheering for them is because of Di Maria". My friend was like ugh, why would you even like Di Maria? I told him because I think he was amazing in the last WC and that he is super underrated and overhated, when he's not only a great baller but also shows a lot of passion and heart for the game. After the group stage my friend was like, you know what? I guess Di Maria isn't as bad a I thought. And after the final he was like "OMFG I LOVE DI MARIA!". I honestly don't know why he's had a bit of a bad rep, or how he play in the club football, but I just wanted to say thank you for putting some light on him because he's truly been amazing for the Argentinian national team.
@tomatoisnotafruit5670 Жыл бұрын
reason he had a bad rep is because he (and Aguero) where always getting injured and where not there to help Argentina win, but this time Di Maria came through!

The problem with Di Maria is with consistency, but when he's on his game he's almost unplayable. Like the CL Final I'm 2014 he was absolutely amazing.

The work with the Swiss precision of Scaloni, the defiant attitude of Pitbull Dibu, the mystique of Lionel, the impenetrable barrier of Romero/Martinez and Otamendi, the tireless drive of Alvarez, the dribbling of Angelito and the fidelity and values represented by the entire team. team for Messi, the national team and the country, that was what moved me most about the World Cup. More than having won, I obviously knew that it was the maximum consecration, the cherry on top, but what I valued the most was the human development of the entire team staff. Di Maria already came with an injury from previous matches, Scaloni took him out because he was exhausted from the wear and tear he did. Just as Angelito and the rest of the team demonstrated, they were willing to give their lives to see Messi raise the cup.

What a freaking amazing job the Scaloneta did. I am so proud of the brilliant planning and playing from Argentina.

What an amazing analysis. First time watching your channel. I agree 100%, Di María's change was a bit hasty and really changed the way Argentina played. It should be taken into consideration that he was recovering from an injury and maybe Scaloni saw him not being able to finish the game. What a World Cup. Best one ever so far.

I believe it was partially Di Maria signaling Scaloni when he was at his limit. Obviously they would have wanted him playing the whole game but he had physical limitations.
@hansvonmannschaft9062 Жыл бұрын
Di Maria was hurt, he had physical problems and was recovering, he still went out as a surprise move from Scaloni. It would've been great if he could've played longer, he just couldn't, and that's when, as the previous poster said, he signalled he just couldn't do it anymore. The problem was that he got replaced by Acuña instead of Lisandro.

I literally had flashbacks to the 2014 final where they prematurely substituted Lavezzi.

Scaloni misunderstood a signal from Di María as asking to be subbed, when he was actually telling him he felt fine. A major screw up by Scaloni.

Argentina were great defensively whole tournament except the long balls. Due to their defenders being quite short both the Netherlands and France exploited that weakness with taller players. That's why even some average forwards like Weghorst and Kolo Muani could change the flow of the game. Apart from that Scaloni had answers to everything anyone threw at him.

Great video! It was indeed a masterplan by Scaloni, beautifully executed by La Seleccion. Argentina did almos exactly yhe same play against Brazil in the final of the Southamerican championship!

What's amazing about this channel is not many people in the world can understand the tactical and positional side of the game. It's quite intelligent and in depth. The average football fan is clueless as to the impact coaches have on the team strategy.

As a Messi fan, even though i would say they were a wee bit lucky in this world cup, this team is really a major step up compared to 2018 and even 2014 ones. Like many Argentina players said, they really were serious about 'doing everything for Messi to win', even it means playing rough and throwing your body in the mix. I think it rubbed on Messi as well, it has been a while since he pressed and play with that intensity. I think Europeans are rightly humbled in this world cup. Mbappe could say (Western) Europeans are the frontrunner of the sport, but the one that won the tournament was a true South-American team, one that is gritty and experts of the 'darkside' of the sport. If Emi Martinez played clean and Tchouameni scored that pen, well, who know what would happen, right?

Scaloni has shown that he is very good organizer and motivator. The team really rallied around him and Messi. But it was not enough to win the world cup. He needed to make tactical improvements too. And so he did. He was very impressive.

Great analysys. My two argentine peso cents: aside from the usual skills, this generation of players are used to pressing like hounds, from the centreforward to the goalkeeper (even in Argentina's league this is becoming usual, with the most notable example being Gallardo's River Plate, where Enzo, Julián, Montiel and others came from). Scaloni's weakness has been substitutions. Game plan goes smooth until the second half's 25 or so... it happened during the Copa América and also the WC.

I’d say fitness is the real reason as to why they almost gave up a 2-0 lead 3 times. Imma be honest, they have some young players that can play all game, but their most important players (Messi, Di Maria) are old, for Messi’s case as well, he played every minute of the tournament, I don’t know many 35 year old players besides some of those insane fitness freaks who have always played most of their games doing that at 35. Argentinas tactics clearly were a step above other managers, but his teams would always run out of gas in the last 10 minutes of the 90. But it also managed to show how much grit and how strong the mentality of the players are. Imagine letting two goals in less than 2 minutes, in the World Cup final. Imagine scoring the in extra time, and then losing that lead in the last 4 minutes of extra time, and then in the 123rd minute France get a clear chance that players score 8/10 times. Seriously not only were the tactics brilliant, but the mental fortitude was better than everyone else’s. Argentina had a very tough road to the World Cup final, by almost being eliminated in the second group game, almost losing 2 times in the last 10 minutes of the game after leading 2-0. Personally I had to turn off the stream after those two successive goals, I legitimately thought that the Messi World Cup dream was over, I couldn’t take the heartbreak of Messi being 2-0 up and Argentina dominating the game. But of course Argentina have two wild factors that France do not. Messi, and Martinez. Messi learning from his previous penalty mistakes (literally right at this moment I think he is the best penalty taker in the world) Martinez, the mind game god, he really fucked with the heads of the French players in the end. Also does anyone know why Coman took a pen in the World Cup final? I feel like I’m recent memory he has been the biggest choke in penalties. Like I feel like I remember seeing him miss an important pen in the euros or something. I 100% believe if this was 2018 Messi and Di Maria with the same set of these players, basically just Di Maria and Messi being younger, it would’ve been about 5-0, or 6-0 against France. Do you remember only 2 years ago in the PSG vs. Bayern CL final? Di Maria was bossing the whole game. Messi in 2018, was The old Messi and contemporary Messi almost at his peaks. He had lost a little bit a of speed, but 2018 Messi could still dribble past players easily and still run at defensive leaving player in the dust, he also was only slightly worse of a play maker than he is now, but that’s literally just 4 years of experience passing. Or imagine a 2015 Messi and 2014 Di Maria who played for Madrid with this Argentina team. It probably would’ve been 5-0 even 7-0 against these teams if they stayed fit with just those two being younger, more fit, and faster. Argentina deserved to win this more than any other team, and they showed it.

That's what makes the win even more impressive, that the best players are close to their retirement and still playing at the highest level possible.

As you said. It's impressive how Messi CAN play during the 90 minutes, and also, against France, he played all that extra time. Omg. He must have been so tired, but his stamina is unbeliveable and his driven force.
