I'm of Pontian descent and I regret never taking my dancing lessons seriously (my aunt is the president of this organization!). However, I always think that my love of repetitive, bass-y dance music must be some genetic hold-over from the music my ancestors danced to. SUCH good music!

You've worked this out by watching KZbin have you? How on earth did you manage that? Certainly the Laz (a 'Georgian'-speaking people NOT a 'Turkish'-speaking folk) and the Pontian Greeks shared music, dance and costume but the antecedents of all of these are still very much open to debate. This Black Sea culture long pred=cede the arrival to the region of any 'Turkish'-speaking folk.

'Skylos' is the modern word for dog derived from the ancient 'skylax' meaning 'puppy'. The old word for dog is 'Kyon'. Kynokephaloi definitely means 'doghead' and probably harks back to the fantasies that on the fringes of the world lived some very exotic creatures including persons with part features of animals. The exotic appearance of the first Turks may have seemed to the Greeks a migration of some these people. BTW China was essentially unknown to the Europeans at the time.

Thanks for the history lessons, Geo. So much to learn on youtube! Did you get all your irritation towards me out of your system? You know, if the Greeks hadn't invaded Turkey around 1922, the Pontian Greeks might still be in Pontus? ( lets not you & i have a war, eh? My grandmother and mother barely escaped from Smyrna/Izmir during that war--by pretending they were Italian!) Should I hate the Turks? What possible good could that do? What good is coming out of continuing past wars?

Isn't skylos the Greek word for dog, Kyna the Greek word for China? So kynokefali would mean Chinese-headed. The original Turks entering Anatolia probably appeared to be Chinese to the Greeks, most of whom had little or no contact with East Asians. No? BTW, the name Anatolia derives from the Greek word Anatoli, meaning "the East". Yes? Cheers to all!

The word horon was used by Homer 2 and a half thousand years ago and it has a greek authentic meaning.The greeks make the bigest mistake by calling all muslims Turks.People that live in Karadenis except for some exceptions have nothing to do with the Turks(from Mongolia)

when i said extended lands i mean GREECE the lands my grandfathers ruled for 363 years it doesnt matter if you owned it for ten thousands years or ten years some one will come and take it just like all other empires and countries . who ever is strong owns. whats important is not to harm the innocent people which was is the main rule of war in islam and the ottoman empire also not to harm the environment and animals. un like the crusaders who slaughtered thousands of innocent people

I think Turks will need to show some 'respect and affection' to the Greeks of the Pontus whom they ejected some 90 years ago and who were - at the very least in major part - originators of this style of music/dance. This, instead of claiming that Pontian music/dance 'belongs' to them! How lovely ... take the land; deport its people, claim its ancient culture ...
@triantis35

Like I said before HORON is a greek word with greek authentic meaning that was used by Homer and other ancient greek writers and historians.What extended lands are YOU talking about the ones that have been greek for 10 thousand years??? the lands of the gods of Olymbos...get you facts straight.Diyene I think comes from the word Digene 2 birthplaces 2 cultures 2 families etc etc.By the way not all muslims in Tourkia are Turks

Being proud of what YOU think is your nationality is not bad.Bad is when you close your eyes to the truth.Genitsari were kids that were taken from their family and became later the worst enemies of those that were not homoginised or muslim.How many greek kids were in that ,are there stats??? Nooo My point is that the people in turkia arent all Turks... and maybe not you also.Your state of mind is another thema.

oso your saying the greek and turkish race mixed and blended in a way that you dont really know if you are greek or turkish ? in turkey the law says regardless of your ethnic origin or language if you live in the Republic you are TURKISH like it or hate it and the only offical language is TURKISH even if i have greek blood in me ( which i doubt ) i am a proud nationalist turk and i am thankful to God that he created me as a Turk Muslim

PS- my comment just now was a response to GeoBBB123's comment a week ago. BTW, Greeks,Turks and many other ethnic groups are not "races" but mixtures of various races and subraces, eg, "nordic", "semitic","dravidian", etc., no? So what? We're ALL God's children, Who loves us all equally,No? Attributing favoritism to God is just projecting human egotism, surely not Divine! Cheers!

I mean no offense to anyone, but from what I've seen on youtube, Pontian Greek dancing and dress is borrowed from the Laz, or Karadeniz people. I wonder if the Greeks realize this and pay some respect and affection to the Turkish-speaking folks who may have originated this style. BTW, also looks similar to Georgian? Laz, though the Georgians seem to truly be professionally (ballet) trained and are therefore far better dancers. Cheers to all!

They are Turks in the area because the word turk in greek meantnot a christian.The greeks themselves name them Turks.They are as turks as I am American.Just because they are muslims doesnt mean they are Turks.Turks are the ones that migrated from Mongolia.howmany Monguls do you see in Karadenis?Enjoy our (yours and ours)dances and forget whose they are.They are oursyours too.If you love ths music and dances we love you brother.By the way my grandfather left 2 brothers behind.where are they(wink)

Sipahi ... essentially Greeks use the term 'Mongols' as a form of abuse to denote people foreign Asiatics like the Turks who came to invade lands from the general Mongolia region that were not theirs. The Byzantine Greeks called the first such invading Turks they encountered 'Kynokefali' ie 'Dog-heads' in describing their alien and exotic characteristics. If, as a Turk, you do not look 'Asian' - like many of your people still do - you need to ask yourself the obvious question: Why?

i really dont agree the majority of turks have white skin color and dont look like asians the people that have the more darker skin color are the kurds and many people cant tell the different between theese people

@sipahi61 The Ottomans killed much more people than the Crusaders did during their conquests.The rest of them were enslaved and sold to eastern markets.Far worse than some Western Christian states....However many westerners were equally barbaric to the Ottomans i must admit.Innocent christian peasants did lose their lives because of their resistance against the allien in Europe Ottomans with the Middle Eastern Perso-Arabic culture.
