I feel that the way it was sung does an injustice to such a beautiful song of the infantry. It must be sung with cheer and despair. With the cold hearted realization you’re off to war and may never see your love again. So the time in which it’s sung just doesn’t sit right with me but that’s just my opinion

I agree. I do sometimes catch myself singing it a much more upbeat way; fatalistically determined as you say. I suppose I have a soft spot for sentimentality and wanted to add a melancholy tinge to it. Thanks for listening regardless and giving feedback. ^^
