The Palästinalied ("Palestine Song", also known as Kreuzlied "Song of the Cross") is a song written in the early 13th century by Walther von der Vogelweide, the most celebrated lyric poet of Middle High German literature. It is one of the few songs by Walther for which a melody has survived.
The first line is Middle High German, the second modern German and on the bottom the English translation as always.

I actually like how this song isn't really that much like what you would consider a typical "Deus Vult" song. It's almost entirely about the Crusader's awe and humility in the presence of the Holy Land, the place where Christ walked the Earth, rather than being about battle or conquest. That makes sense, because talking about battle and conquest requires you to talk about yourself a lot, whereas the writer of this hymn/song realized how insignificant he was compared to God.

Pferd Schild They said *typical*, not actual, "Deus Vult" song. The typical Deus Vult song heard nowadays is like the bombastic "In the name of God" the memers like to abuse every time a sentence related to anything Crusader or anti-Saracen/Muslim is uttered. The actual Deus Vult songs are songs like this. although I do have to agree with you on how cancerous the meme culture was

Palästinalied is probably the most popular crusader-song in the modern day. I didn't use to understand the reason, (I always loved it, don't get me wrong) but now after hearing this version, I think I get it. Is this the sound of a bloodthirsty conqueror? No, it's the hymn of a man who has experienced the most important thing in his life. I understand how this is so excellently portrayed thanks to this version. The singer starts by simply speaking in a mesmerized fashion. He is overwhelmed. When his emotion grows to much for speaking, he begins to chant. Then, imagine the grace of his Saviour, he can no longer contain himself. He sings. What does this man sing? A confession of faith. This is what he needed in his life, to see the Holy Land. For him, it affirms his faith, instilled at a young age. Perhaps he never really had a very strong faith, but this sight changes all that. Just by being here, he understands. The awe consumes him. Then, with his emotions at a height, he sings again. This time, it's what we expect more from a crusader song; you can hear the "God wills it!" (Deus vult, there, I said it) in his voice. Now, his mind is on conquest, but still not one of greed and villainy that most thik of. For this man, it is truly a Holy War. Most singers don't perform these last two verses, likely because they don't want to seem like they support a physical holy war, but these verses put that "holy war" into context. That is why this man is here, even if his being here is the most important thing to him. The Crusades were not a glorious fight; war never is. There were also mercenaries fighting fir wealth and prestige, just like any conflict true, some men are just bloodthirsty. I also don't agree with all of the sentiments of the crusades, but those were the views at the time, and these people weren't evil for having them. This is why I think Palästinalied is so beloved; it isn't about the Crusades at all, unlike many other crusader-songs; it's about the mindset of a crusader and the story of a man whose faith is re-newed by the sight of a place he has long heard of but never seen. Now he lives worthy. Many can relate to this, whatever their life-changing moment was, it surely felt similar to this. This song certainly gave me a similar moment, experiencing this man's pure, raw emotion. Songs like these give us a view of people from an oft-studied point in history and show that maybe, the aren't so foreign and different from us after all?

Croatian catholic here I agree with you this song really is a story of a man who experienced a most important thing in his life. Is not your typical "deus vult" type of song that teenagers listen because they pretend to be some kind of crusaders. Is not about war and conquest. Is really unique compared to other songs. Sorry if said something wrong my english is not very good. Also this is the best comment about this song ever! Greetings from an Egyptian kid. Germans are the nobles of Europe, and I think I may have been a German in a former life, as I love this country for a reason beyond my grasp. I wish one day the world would stop fighting and we would come together in one peaceful vessel of faith in our loving father above the canopy. Marvellous song about the holy land. @Muffinator Almost all European languages with the exception of a very few can be traced back to the same root. One exception is Basque, it is believed that this might be one of the last remaining traces of a language spoken of the let’s say pre European natives. Which makes perfectly sense as living in the mountains is a way to isolate. Europe was basically colonized following the rout from North Africa passing by the Middle East to the Caucasus and/or Bosphorus. They also spread to Asia, India specifically thus the name of this (wider) language family Indo-European.

Und Rome in the East, vom gleichen Autor. Gegenseitige Anschuldigungen bringen rein gar nichts. Denn der Feind der Menschheit, seien dies Muslime oder Christen oder andere Menschen, ist der gleiche.

This song reminds me of an event I experienced 6 years ago: My buddy and I went with other friends to the Medieval Festival in Bückeburg, Germany. We all dressed up, me as a mage and my buddy as a crusader. I should perhaps mention here that my buddy is very historically knowledgeable, he loves European history and is an absolute expert in it too, so his armor was historically accurate and absolutely authentically replicated from metal, as was his sword.... Anyway, we were at the festival that day and we all had a good time together, drinking a lot and having fun. It was around midnight when, dead drunk, we staggered into town in our costumes to look for a cab to take us home. Looking for it, we passed a shisha bar that played loud Arabic music. My buddy stopped in front of it and just looked into this bar for about 10 minutes without saying a word, when I asked him to come with me for the hundredth time, he said to me "I'll be right back..." then he closed his helmet flap and entered Shisha bar. Inside the Arab youths laughed at him until he drew his sword and yelled "DEUS VULT" at the top of his voice and smashed the pipes and kicked the tables away... I only remember running into the bar to stop him, then I woke up in the hospital with broken ribs and a sprained neck. My buddy got his nose and both wrists broken... probably his own fault for the latter. I haven't drunk mead since then.

@ChrisK312 that's just notes though, the presentation and Instrumentality is a very modern style. We have treatises detailing how song such as thia would've been performed in period, and it'd be quite a bit different.

It sounds quite beautiful and better than most versions of this song around, HOWEVER it doesn't sound medieval. The instruments, theoretical framework and techniques are more similar to what would've been practiced in the early modern period onwards. A more medieval presentation would've incorporated a lot more melody ornamentations, melismatic singing and (and this is very important) little to no harmony.

Friends, when I listened to this and read the text, I burst into tears. I'm almost 20 years old now. And because of this version of the song, I myself, being a natural atheist, believed in God. And I'm not kidding now. The text is too powerful to ignore, and the way the entire Christian world began to move away from these primordial covenants simply breaks my heart, so much that I don’t want to live. I hope many people have already begun to understand that happiness is not in money... I may have moved a little away from the meaning of this song, but it gives me the feeling that everything that is described in the Bible was so... And I want to cry, I want to cry like that how the Devil ultimately corrupted humanity, giving instead of meaning to live correctly, to live for one’s own good, which has long been perverted. Therefore, I will believe in God, the real one not portrayed by the feeding church, but the one who is written in the Bible.
