Ari Vatanen's 1988 Peugeot 405 T16 GR "Pikes Peak" - The Legend at 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed

How wonderful to finally see the Peugeot 405 T16 GR "Pikes Peak", with which the driver Ari Vatanen won the edition of the American hill climb in 1988. This car is a true legend because the Finnish driver reached the amazing record time of 10:47:77. Car with high-level technical features such as 4-wheel drive and steering and a carbon-Kevlar version of the 405 bodywork. The purpose-built chassis is made of sheet steel and steel tubes. The engine is positioned very low in front of the right rear wheel, with the turbocharger on the opposite side. Despite its 1905 cc (116.25 in³), the XU 9T Inline-4 engine can deliver 600 bhp (447.4 kW) at 7,000 rpm and a massive torque of 735 Nm at 4,500 rpm. A 6-speed manual gearbox with a carbon clutch takes care of moving it. Thanks to a weight of only 880 kg (1940 lbs) in the right hands of the Finnish driver, it proved to be a winning weapon, consecrating the Vatanen-Peugeot 405 T16 duo to legends. Che meraviglia aver visto finalmente la Peugeot 405 T16 GR "Pikes Peak" con cui il pilota Ari Vatanen ha vinto l'edizione della corsa in salita Americana nel 1988. Questa vettura è una vera leggenda perchè il pilota finlandese alla guida all'epoca realizzò lo strepitoso tempo record di 10:47:77. Vettura con caratteristiche tecniche di alto livello come la 4 ruote motrici e sterzanti ed una versione in carbonio-kevlar della carrozzeria della 405. Il telaio appositamente costruito è realizzato in lamiera e tubi d'acciaio. Il motore è posizionato molto in basso davanti alla ruota posteriore destra con il turbocompressore sul lato opposto. Nonostante i suoi 1905 cc (116.25 in³) il propulsore XU 9T Inline-4 è in grado di erogare 600 bhp (447.4 kw) a 7.000 giri/min ed una massiccia coppia di ben 735 Nm a 4.500 Giri/min. A muoverlo ci pensa un cambio manuale a 6 marce con frizione in carbonio. Grazie ad un peso di soli 880 kg (1940 lbs), nelle mani giuste del pilota Finlandese, si dimostrò un'arma vincente consacrando alla leggende la coppia Vatanen- Peugeot 405 T16. The record run in 88 was ran with a snow blizzard across the top of the hill, so half the track was essentially wet and slushy, so the record time would of been alot lower if track was dry. In 89 Vatanen was up on hes record run by over 10 seconds but ripped the rear left wheel off after sliding wide and hitting a rock. Robby Unser won that year in the 2nd 405 but ran a time slighlty slower than the 88 record run(dry track in 89.)

2nd 405 is also the one that won the 88 run aka the 'golden' 405 Pikes Peak (in Peugeot's museum). There was a number '3' but I'm fairly certain the '3rd' car is this same car (driven by Juha Kankkunen - same year as Vatanen's win prior to Robby Unser). I remember Peugeot running three 205's on Pikes Peak but two were dismantled and parts used on the two 405's. The third 205 went onto winning the French Rally Cross, but was stolen prior to it going to a museum after winning a couple of seasons!

Ciao Matteo, ricordo di aver visto la 405 al Motor Show del 1988, come esibizione tra le varie batterie del Memorial Bettega. Si sfidavano con la 205 T16 di Zanussi. La Pioneer era sponsor nella area 48, e aveva invitato queste due vetture. Grazie ciao 👍🏁🇮🇹

@@Italiansupercarvideo Si Matteo, il video l'ho visto, c'è. Ero andato per ben due volte quell'anno. In un feriale si correva il Rallycross con i campioni del campionato Europeo sulle Gr. B, e ricordo ancora adesso le cannonate che tirava in staccata la Metro 6R4 di Will Gollop. Era bi turbo con quasi 700 HP. L'antagonista era Martin Schanche con la Ford RS 200, mentre Alessandrini con la S4 non poteva competere ad armi pari perché mancava di una preparazione specifica per il RX
