she is definitely perfectly capable of doing it in more theatrical way, listen to her in her Broadway days, but she has decided that the breathy tone works more for her, I think that it works beautifully for all her songs, I just think she didn't make it work as well with this song. It's still amazing.
@AGEE_954 жыл бұрын
Belting and singing more theatrically works fine for her. I think she just chooses to sing more breathy because that's just what she wants to do. She is famous for her breathy vocals, but she still belts a lot in her poppier songs, which we should know if we listen to her music enough. I appreciate that she wanted to mix the two styles together and do something unique. Also, this song, to me, is a bit too depressing, based on the lyrical content (even for broadway), to be sung in the most dramatic way possible. A more subdued approach feels more appropriate, and I think she realized that which is cool.
@lisahansen61964 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I wish she had a fuller and clearer sound in this performance. Too breathy for my taste. A beautiful song of course but don't agree with some of her choices. Thanks for this great reaction!
@AGEE_954 жыл бұрын
I like that she wanted to do something a little different. Mixing the styles of singing added something new to the song, instead of just doing what has been done and is expected. She made the song her own, and still sounded amazing.

I prefer her stylistic choices because for me, they hit harder in the feels. She made it her own and it felt personal. It felt like she's been through something that absolutely shattered her and now she's vulnerable because of it. It's hard to explain, she touched something in me for sure.

This version is definitely much softer than traditional musical theatre. I liked that though: the vulnerability and almost-broken at times quality, like there's a weight pressing down on her, and she's small and quiet just to hold herself together. The contrast to when she does have more chord closure, when she does belt and get louder: I think it makes it more impactful and precious. I do see your point though, and thank you for articulating it so kindly. Great reaction!

i completely agree as well. also i listen to a lot of her live performances (especially from swt which was an extremely difficult tour for her emotionally) and i’ve noticed her voice gets EXTREMELY breathy when she trying not to cry. i’m not trying to say i know for sure that it’s why she’s doing it here, but i personally feel like her breathiness in this specific performance is a combination of stylistic choice and her trying not to cry, based on what i’ve observed from her before in her body language and voice in those situations. i hope this makes sense, and i know i’m quite late to the conversation so i apologize, just figured i’d share my thoughts :)
@laylascott60962 жыл бұрын
@@void7100 definitely agree! I watched a lot of the sweetener tour vocal compilations and goodnight and go and needy are two of my favorite songs. Both were rough for her emotionally but I happen to love those emotional, raw vocals. Especially goodnight and go Coachella

the thing with ariana is that her idea of emotion and sorrow is more airy vocal based and lighter to bring that emotion. i do agree with that stylistic choice but it’s not for everyone. though when she does use her chest voice, it sounds so rich and full because she grew up in musical theatre. i definitely agree with that she should add more chest voice

It's ok Hannah that, I also agree with you for me it feels like she sung the song with too much breath and also waiting for a big belt. So, it doesn't really feels like you're a hater and I kinda like that you already said a negative comment or should I say a comment that you prefer the singer does. i thought this too the first time i listened, i was expecting more connected vocals and more of a belt from her especially from the bridge onwards, but the more i listen to it i actually love this rendition. i feel like it was definitely a stylistic choice from her to put more of a pop spin on the vocals and i think it actually adds a lot of emotion to have more dynamics in the vocals. but she for sure could sing this in a strictly musical theatre style and it would be really cool to see that as well!

this is my favourite piece of hers and being a big fan of Ms Grande, wouldn't change a thing in her performance. It was a zoom production, not broadway play, not exactly a studio engineered song for an album. Oh, don't mind me, I was happy to hear something [new to me] of her music and in the context of being done during the pandemic was thrilled because of the depth of her performance. I'm a word guy, not a music guy, and I finally found where I'm going here, I got the vibe that you wanted "more or better", and IMO under the circumstances of this production, maybe she could have used different technique, for my untrained ear, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Your critique doesn’t seem mean-spirited or unflattering, just pointing out areas where stylistic choices diverged but didn’t change the quality or substance. However, how much input do you think Jason Robert Brown had in the direction of the performance? As the writer and composer, don’t you imagine he was also the producer of this concert? So as much of a star as Ms. Grande is, she still takes direction, and performs with him at the piano, as well as the other musicians. I imagine it’s a collaborative effort to blend her musical theater background and pop career. Maybe an emphasis was to do the unexpected, especially since it wasn’t the traditional type of venue.

i personally love that she chose a breathy sound for this song, i like the way it gets fuller towards the end (sorry if i’m using the wrong terms, english isn’t my first language). i feel like i get more emotion because of that & i really like her soft vocals, although her chest voice is amazing & more impressive i guess, but i love this. i feel like she used enough chest voice here (in my opinion of course) because it makes it more special than if she were to mostly use chest voice. that being said, i too wish she would’ve used chest voice at 5:35 but she kinda made up for it lately🤭✨

I think it was definitely a stylistic choice for her to keep it really breathy because I think for her it's an artistic choice to make it feel more vulnerable and sad but I do agree that it was definitely the more odd choice for a musical theatre song. I mean, we all know she can do it, she obviously did it for defying gravity. I think that she was trying to keep it more pop and vulnerable, and I'm wondering if Jason Robert Brown directed her to do it that way since he definitely had a hand in composing and going over her vocals, I'm assuming to keep her general audience? Also, just as a general comment you seem so sweet and your smile is so infectious!!

I mean I have no clue about professional singing but I have a feeling that they were trying to interpret the song in their own a new perspective. Like she was adding more breather sounds when she was trying to get a more depressing and hurt feeling in the dialogue (like she was trying to hide) and more belty when she felt a lot more confident in voicing her frustration. I mean I know it's not the original tone of the song but maybe they were just somethhing new and adapted it? But that was just my thinking, it's still pretty...Ariana Grande-Style and not the classical Broadway Musical-Style

I understand your points, but she wasn't singing straight musical theater. She was blending pop with musical theater, using her own signature styling that she has become famous for, and which people love. I think she has earned that right, and I think the composer obviously loves her take, or he wouldn't have let her sing on it. I personally feel she puts more emotion into the song, she builds the intensity, which straight musical theater can sometimes lack for me.
