Theory about the jaw thing: It's a visual cue for her audience that says, "Hey, admire this run." Those runs are a major feature in her vocal style, and sharp jaw movements make them pop even more, as well as making them seem extra crisp and controlled. It works on me, anyway. I take way more notice of the runs when she accentuates them with her jaw. I saw a few comments that she might be doing it to keep track of her run, similar to the way Mariah Carey traces her runs with her hand. That seems plausible, too.

I worry that she doesn't feel the need to do a more traditional theatre sound. Even with current shows or shows that focus more on pop rock, you can still hear a blend of an actors theatre vocal training and adding a pop sound in there. I have to say that I think you're one the few people who, as an avid listener of Ariana's, has the perfect balance of praising the legitimate talent that she is and still offering constructive criticism of her technique. Most people will use her weaknesses (which all singers have because no one is perfect), to try and say she's just mediocre, or to bash her as an overall vocalist. You always acknowledge the areas she can improve in, without letting it take away from what you know are her greatest strengths and what truly makes her one the best in this generation. So I appreciate your videos, and I typically agree with what you have to say. And you actually sound like you KNOW what you're talking about, so there's that.

Hi Sam. So, I am Arianator for years, I have been following Ari for a long time, and without a doubt she is one of my biggest influences to sing, just as she has been influencing this whole new generation. Ariana, like all the singers, has some habits, some quirks... This chin movement that you’ve been sitting on so much in the video, she’s always doing, to help run, but also for aesthetic reasons, for her, and I confess that for me too, this movement looks really cool visually... but it certainly does not interfere with the quality of HER singing, or mine. She can do these movements and not have tension at the same time, something that many cannot. But I understand that each singer has his limitations, and that what one can do, maybe the other can't, but that's okay, that's normal. PS: I love your channel. 🖤

Most of you are mentioning that there's nothing really wrong with the jaw movement & it's "just a habit" but what you don't realize is that he keeps mentioning it because that constant jaw movement when doing riffs & runs, leads to jaw tension, which is a technical flaw which affects one's voice negatively in the long run.

Sam Johnson even said in his GIAW VMA’s video that if this was truly a problem for her She would fix it. 3:30 he clearly says “I don’t think it’s affecting her sound Negative or Positive at this point” he also says at 3:50 “Most people will start to feel tension, maybe ariana isn’t like that” and the fact she has been doing this since she was 6 obviously proves this isn’t affecting her negatively or positively

Maybe Ariana is not most people but it's still worth testing to see if you can still get the exact same sounds that you're wanting without using as much musculature" Then as he continues to watch it, he emphasizes "if you don't need something then why do it, and if you don't need to do something and it's a negative why do it." @9:46 Kindly stop with the selective listening... if you want to hear her do more of a theatrical approach, she performed “the wizard and i” from wicked. it’s incredible

i'm not sure if you've reacted to either of these before but if you haven't, ariana doing 'getting out' and 'jason's song' both with jrb are truly something. she wrote jason's song with him in 2016 and it was a bonus track on dangerous woman, they performed it once on jimmy fallon and it was fantastic. i miss her singing like that.

Sam, I love you. I also love Ariana's jaw. The end xx

she does the jaw thing as a habit/safety net thing, it helps her focus in a way

Sam, you'll probably never see this. I really appreciate your channel because I see a lot of channels that critique immediately and you never seemed like that person to me. I'm sorry if anyone said something critical to you. You consistently give singers the benefit of the doubt and explain yourself very clearly. It seems like you had a tough time and overexplained this one when you didn't have to. I've seen you defend singers taking their time or dodging notes to save themselves from vocal strain and you're good-natured and clearly knowledgeable. Thank you for being you.

I like this guy.. but I don’t have any knowledge about the technicalities of singing so I just agree with everything he says. He seems to be very knowledgeable and talented 👌🏽 😃

I would love to see you react to Lea Michele!! Have you seen Ariana on SNL imitating other singers? It’s so good! Would be a fun and goofy analysis also XD

That jaw thing seems like it's only there to look "good" and expressive while singing. This was okay but it sounds (and is) in a very controlled environment.

Hope you'll consider doing a reaction to a version of this song done by Lea Salonga. There's one of her, in rehearsal, which is also a very emotional rendition like Ariana, although where Ariana leaned into the emotionality through "coloring" her voice a certain way, in that video, Lea went the "acting" through it route. Would be a good way to learn about conveying just the right, or most appropriate amount, of emotions in singing.

You should react to her live performance of “The Wizard and I” ! It sounds and is a much more Broadway style of singing!

Fun, informative and heartwarming as always Sam! I would love to see you react to Renee Rapp, specifically her Dancing on my Own cover, but any video would work. She's soooo talented and I would love to hear your analysis on how she gets the sounds she does!

I think it is just normal to change your style of music as an artist over the years but as a big fan of Ariana I sometimes miss her old style for songs too. So I am always excited to hear her covers of broadway style songs like this or her version of 'The wizard and I'. You should check out this one, I think she sings there a little bit more in that 'broadway style'. :)

I really suggest you watch Arianas performance of ‘Wizard And I’ 💚at the Wicked Anniversary. There was a lot of expectation of her to perform it close to the original but she added her pop flare which many loved!!

I'm not a fan or Ariana, but I watch your videos of her. Even though what you say makes sense to my brain, my ears and heart just can't appreciate her singing. But I guess it's a big world, and different people like different things.🤔 Thanks to your videos, at least I know she's a very good and capable singer. 👍

You have many things like crisp sound with voice, vinyl sounds, like i’ve tryed different things and like found out that helps, the other things other than that is just tones, pitch and every tones have details so You need to hit the tones like the right way all the time and then You have fall z, and You have high, mid and low in singing and a mid in every frequenzy within the range.
