As a business owner still working a full-time job, I just had to come to the honest realization that I just could not do my passion (my business) justice by sleeping "normal" hours. I started waking up at 3:45AM each day to start my business' momentum each day, knock out projects, fulfill requests, ship orders and other tasks prior to going to work each day. Then upon returning home in the evening, hit the gym to stay active/healthy, and then work on what tasks required attention carrying us into the next day. Following this regimen was just the only way to keep up with the monsoon of workflow staring at me...and it's paid dividends. I've doubled annual gross revenue, launched 2 new brands, brought on additional resources to the brands and expanded travel to more locations more frequently. Whether it's "healthy" or not, it was the only way. If you're not moving forward, you're shrinking backwards......but yes, I totally struggle at times on such brief periods of sleep. In the end, I'm sure it will be purely speculative whether it was all worth it or not...

I started thinking sleep deprivation burnout was the way to succeed in my Junior Year of college. I am now 30 and have been sleep deprived since about 22 yrs old. I even went to the hospital bc of coffee intake and lack of sleep, with ongoing health issues, DESPITE an extremely healthy nutritional diet. #Crazy #OverIt Xo! Such a great episode, Gary. Definitely one of my favorites. For Ariana, I think the misconception that "lack of sleep is good" came from all the BS "motivators" who say if you sleep you are giving up on your dreams or not taking advantage of the hours in the day. I realized a few weeks ago that when I got 8 hours a night for 5 days in a row, my mood was COMPLETELY different than when I had been trying to get by on 6 hours or less. It's helped me stay more positive, and have more patience during the day. Thanks so so much for spreading science over dogma 👍🏼

Binge watched Gary's movies . Took an audit of myself. Reversed engineered my private world with my boyfriend and myself... Called BS on my actions in proportion to my aspirations ... Now am putting into practice what I have been lazy on. What a world changer! I only had 4 appointments scheduled for my Mary Kay business. After 12 hours of hustling, I have 17 meetings on the books, $336 in sales and am creating a plan for tomorrow's hustle. Gary, thanks for the kick in the ass. I bought the book today

I think for me I started to believe that a lack of sleep was a pathway to success in college and law school. All of our college professors and advisers would joke about "all night study sessions" or the need for "unlimited coffee and energy drinks". It became a cultural thing and everyone would be expected to close down the law library or stay at the local coffee shop until they kicked you out. If you didn't then you weren't "cool" or "working hard enough". That transitioned into the work place as common practices and I think Arianna's book starts a much needed conversation about sleep and it's importance for success. Since I opened my own law firm about 5 years ago I have ensured that everyone in my office (just me and three employees right now) keep normal business hours and aren't disturbed on the weekends. I've tried to destroy that cultural perspective that the only way to be successful is to work until you drop dead. I wish more in my field would do the same.

Thank you for doing this episode of The Show. I started not sleeping so much because I felt like I had to "catch up" and do better in life because I didn't follow my passion in life until I was almost 30. For the last 2 years I worked at least 3 jobs, doubles and weekends and gave up working out and eating healthy (which I was doing regularly before). I also started cutting back on sleep. It started with 5 hours a night to 4 to 3 until eventually I was skipping at least one night a week of sleep to get things done. At first I thought this was great, I don't need sleep and I'm getting so much done. Then started with the health issues and I started having to miss working. I realized I wasn't giving 100% to all of my jobs because I could no longer focus. I decided to focus on 1 job full time and 1 part time. It's been a few weeks, I am still dealing with the repercussions of sleep deprivation. I now feel exhausted from doing very little, have high anxiety for seemingly no reason

I do want to focus on my health again by eating right and working out once I figure out how to normally sleep 8 hours again. I am thankful that you said you do sleep and it is important because I have felt like I'm not working hard enough when I do sleep.

Wow Arianna Huffington is so intelligent! I loved this episode and want her book. Also, I used to stay up way late trying to get ahead on home work even though I was so tired that I couldn't even function very well just because I thought it would make me a better student. After many mornings of waking up useless in class, I definitely realized that a lot of the times I spent burning the midnight oil really weren't worth it.

This was very encouraging because like many, I have alway equated "hustling" and hard work with lack of sleep. Sleep has always been a priority for me. I never pulled an all nighter in college and consistently get 7 hours of sleep and I always felt like that somehow made me less of a hard worker. Thank you for the validation and for confirming what I have thought all along. A well rested person is a more successful person.

I'm glad I stumbled on this old episode of the show. It is very timely for me. For those who have a hard time sleeping, marjoram essential oil diluted (with some other kind of carrier oil) on the soles of the feet gives me the deepest most refreshing sleep ever. Thanks for this episode Gary and Arianna. It may be my favorite episode ever - or at least in the top 5. Sleep deprivation is not heroic or helpful. I am so glad to be past that, and at peace with what I can accomplish in my waking hours.

I'm so glad sleep is getting the recognition it deserves. One habit I have had for the last 25 years is the very first thing I do as soon as my eyes open is think - how many hours sleep did I just have? (yes even before I check my phone or go to the toilet, literally before I actually lift my head from the pillow). If I have 7 hours or more I feel like my day will be okay. If I have less, I have to make sure I make it up that night.

Thanks, Gary for this great post with Arianna! She is the epitome of girl boss! QOTD: For me...I have for the most part tried to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. I realize that I literally don't function. When I was in grad school, and my classmates were staying up all night "studying" for an exam, I knew I wouldn't gain any more information or perform well if I didn't sleep. Some of my classmates would do worse on an exam...even if they had studied 5 more hours than I had. Sleep makes me perform better - and I am glad I learned it in school - so that now for my business I know I perform better if I am sleeping. I have yet to regret going to bed instead of staying up a couple hours to get in that last email. As always, thanks for the great content and setting an example of consistency for your people!

That ending though!! sums it up - how there is a culture of 24/7 grinding and the negatives. The fact is you have to grind and hustle as efficiently with your hours you are awake while hitting your sleep numbers to always be 100 everyday.

To answer Arianna's question, my wake up call to realizing just how much plenty of sleep is important, was when I got severe eczema and all the emotional unrest connected to it. At nighttime is when the skin HEALS and the inflammatory processes subside. I still hustle, but I sleep at least 8 hours and more when needed - I LISTEN to my body. I've also completely hanged my diet. My anxiety levels are so much lower, my mind is clearer and I'm a better creator for it.

QOTD I think since college. Since when I thought it was not the true way to succeed? Probably 2 months ago when I was so sick because of lack of sleep. I was diagnosed of having typhoid symptoms. Since that I am so thoughtful of balancing between hustle and not too carried away with work.

When I was an officer in the Navy on submarines, sleep deprivation was a badge that people seemed to wear. It was constantly talked about as a way of saying how busy you were and how much you'd done. After playing into that for over a year, I realized it was mainly just showing the unproductivity of people and a lack of time management. So I started comparing with people much I'd done and then how much sleep I was getting on top of that.

THE question of the day: I was working 9am-6pm in apartment industry, then 630pm-10pm or sometimes MIDNIGHT delivering pizzas cuz i moved to a new city and was in debt.. on the few days off worked on blog, videos, and real estate license.. I was crunched for time. I started crashing and not making events late in the evening with friends and then finally adjusted my time and things got done one hour a day and sleep after that.

I realized that sleep deprivation was not cool when I was started feeling to tired to do normal things that I consider fun. When I was too tired to have fun, after I have worked hard to earn the opportunity to enjoy my success, that's when I realized I was depriving myself. Now, I enjoy sleeping because I realize that getting rest gives me energy to do what I love to do. I don't like being lazy, and just laying in bed, just because I don't want to get up, I think that's "horse shit." However, recognizing when you need to rest, and when you need to work, requires a higher degree of self-awareness. Thanks Arianna & Gary! Keep them coming!

#QOTD, I have know since ancient teen years... I have had this skill in manipulating and/or just steering things and relationships. But having the skill, realizing it's not for everybody, and knowing when to use it and when not, and what great responsibility comes with it... I used to think that since I was pretty good at it, it was my responsibility to make sure that all those relationships were going smoothly. And of course some didn't. And every so many years, there was 1, whom I could influence, but never quite get right. And I cared, sooo deeply, that I lost night after night after night, believing subconsciously that this was my responsibility and that I just had to be able to make everything work well. Because I was good at it, it just never occurred to me, that it wasn't my responsibility... And those were the times that everything started to go wrong... So yeah, sleep, super important. On the other hand I am super lucky, I go to sleep super-fast like Gary. I might have too little like you said, but when I feel tired it's mainly emotional cuz life sure throws a lot at me, and I almost always get enough hours of sleep. When life goes well on the other hand, I just wake up after 6 hours of sleep with one question on my mind: "What is the most awesome thing I can do today?"

Once I hit my goals I feel like I can find that sleep balance, but I'm not where you guys are, so I feel like I need to still grind. In high school I had a lot of responsibility and things to learn and to get done. This was the time that I thought that if I don't sleep will do more work. It was like that for 2 years - 5 hours of sleep, a lot of work and ect. When I got to the university I felt that I'm so exhausted and I just needed a break. I was going to work full time, the university was also full time. I had so much trouble with sleep, nightmares and just exhaustion .. then because of that I had a period of serious anxiety going on. Then it was the time that I've had enough! I've changed my sleep habits, started meditating and most important I've learned how to say NO! Now because of that I do so much more work and it's so efficient, I feel relaxed and happy. I just love my sleep!

Real nice episode and a real good change from the usual "how do I promote somethin on social Gary?" topics that sometimes are prevalent on the shoooow. #QOTD I never really bought into the whole sleep deprivation thing but I'm trying to ensure that I'm good on sleep more and more. That being said I try not to exacerbate sleep troubles by *worrying* about sleep itself too much. It only takes a few nights of "oh crap I need more sleep" running through your brain to make you realize it is making it worse. Managing stress during waking hours is my current priority.

If u study material, then eat lunch and then take a 20 min nap, it allows you to retain the information you were working on prior to lunch at an increased percentage of 60-80%... it is called symbionic learning. A lot of corporations offer sleep pods for the activation of symbionic learning, which helps staff retain information fully and re charge them for the day with more energy and the ability to last longer hours in their workday if needed.

The combination of these two on the same show had great potential. IF you were going to burn an episode promoting a book on sleep, at very least maybe give us some practical info as to why we should check this book out.
