The problem is the precedent. You cannot set a precedent and stop one person, because then you have to stop every person, and then it slowly becomes more and more restrictive, and eventually the idea of free speech in the UFC no longer exists. Dana is not an idiot, and he understands how laws and rules work; once they are implemented they can grow out of control until they become a monster.

Ariel’s stance is emotional. As to be expected. He’s an emotionally driven guy. Regardless of how you personally feel about what Colby says (or DDP, who seems to be getting a pass for what he said), if you don’t support freedom of speech, you support cancel culture. Also, the guys are literally going to fight eachother the next day. It’s not like they won’t have the opportunity to resolve their differences. I don’t think fighters should put innocent spectators at risk of serious harm, but as for trash talk?, how can you filter when fighters’ emotions can easily take control which is what getting ready for a fight which could lead to serious harm or even death will do to many fighters. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of that 25% increase in PPV to see if the increase was triggered purely by Coby’s comment, and how this 25% increase compares to a typical rise in PPV after a pre-fight press conference. Also, after the press conference maybe a lot more people signed up to see Edwards get his own back which would mean that it was Edwards’s supporters who really triggered the increase. Just trying to say that this is a lot more nuanced than we’d like to initially think.
