Beethoven's last piano sonata in C minor, Op. 111, was written in 1821-1822. The fiery first movement, which begins with a dramatic and forceful introduction, contains fugal and polyphonic elements (common in Beethoven's late period) reminiscent of the baroque period. The second movement, Arietta, is indeed one of Beethoven's most spectacular movements. For me, the Arietta contains two large parts. The first is the introduction of a simple theme, which gradually metamorphoses into some of Beethoven's most emotionally intense and dramatic music. The second is the ending, which is reminiscent of an epic tale. In the ending, Beethoven modulates briefly from C major (the key of the Arietta) to E-flat major, then returns to C major with a grand entrance of the original theme, which winds down to a calm and peaceful ending of the sonata (indeed, of all of Beethoven's 32 sonatas).
Played in a recital at the Monart Arts Center, in Ashdod, Israel.

Ariel, great rendition. I love this piece and you played it perfectly. For such a young man you have a great understanding of such profound music and also a great musical taste judging from the pieces you choose to play.

This stunning piece allows us a deep look into Ludwig van Beethoven's soul, at the time he composed it. How impressive, that you 'tackle' this difficult (and rather unpopular) Sonata, in such a mature way. Thank you Ariel ~ and ~ BRAVO!

Ariel, the more I hear you play such a varied and impressive repertoire, the more I am impressed with your poetic emanations. I have lived with Op. 111 longer than you have. I have a recording on KZbin of a live performance at Tully Hall. In my opinion, your Allegro is too fast and therefore lacks drama. Your Aria in the second movement is sublime. Someone mentioned Brendel’s performance as the ideal one. Your Aria is far superior to his. It reveals you at your best. However, Beethoven didn’t write the word “Variations” because evidently each variation grows out of the same tempo as the Aria. So when you get to the so-called jazz Variation, you are way too fast. You did the same thing in the first movement Allegro. When there are sixteenth note passages you suddenly change the tempo and go too fast. In the second movement, at the end of those endless trills when the hands are 5 ½ octave apart you miss something which practically no one knows about: in the ms., Beethoven erased the word cresc. So the highest tone should be the softest. It is the heart-throb moment in the whole Sonata. Isn’t it a shame that we can’t meet to discuss such important issues. Nevertheless you are to be commended for your serious devoted work to the sacred art of music. Bravo to you. Seymour Bernstein

Thank you for this, you are in daunting company. Few deliver the intensity demanded - Brendel is a good model.

My ear is not that trained and I haven't heard much of Beethoven but I did hear some Jazzy stuff going on in there.
