A note on Halfbreed: the first edition did not include 1-2 pages that depict a scene of sexual assult inflicted upon Campbell. The page was ripped out without Campbell's consent. Two women approached Campbell years later, telling her they would find the page. She said that they were all burned. These women found the page in the archives with a red x across on the page. Campbell added that page to this new edition. She is incredible.

i totally agree with what you said about school shaping our "hate" for certain books, authors or genres. I remember in 9th grade my English teacher was the absolute worst, i hated her, i hated the class and all the kids in it. I was totally miserable. We read Fahrenheit 451 and I could not say enough bad things about it for years to come. Fast-forward to college, my sophomore year im taking a science fiction class and we are assigned a good chunk of short stories from Bradbury's Invisible Man. I loved my professor though and when she saw me groaning over Bradbury I told her the story with F451. She gave me a bit of a look, told me to just trust her and start with The Long Rain and go from there. She was totally right. I freaking loved it, could not stop reading! I'm actually on a bit of a personal challenge to re-read the books I hated in school. I have a feeling that the results will be pretty similar. Bad teachers can make even the greatest literature seem like garbage.

Clarice Lispector is indeed AMAZING and one of the best Brazilian authors, but I have to say that we have produced a lot of incredible authors! As a good Brazilian, I feel the need to recommend two: Machado de Assis, which is arguably our most famous author. One of his best books is The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas - which got a new translation last month and the Amazon copies sold out in a day. Also, if you want to reignite your love for contemporary, there's Vitor Martins! He has three books published here, and they're all fluffy, happy, queer rom-coms that I think you'd enjoy! He's making his international debut this year with Here The Whole Time (also, the cover is stunningly beautiful!)

Love that you read non-YA and more obscure books! Honestly, I'm not big on YA and I love finding booktubers that don't emphasize that genre.

LISTEN TO THE SPLIT TOOTH AUDIOBOOK!! That listen was my FAVORITE last year. Throat singing included as a part of the experience. Absolutely adored that book.

Authors reading memoirs is 10/10. Authors reading their books SEEMS like a good idea, but there is the infamous Donna Tartt reading of A Secret History that just...missed a mark or two. I listened to An Absolutely Remarkable Thing on Audiobook and the way that last chapter was done made it the best audiobook I've ever listened to!

I think the only way to read a memoir is when the author reads it! I love hearing them voice their story because they know how to tell it to make it the best and have inflections where they're needed. For fiction, give me a person with a wonderful voice who can change pitch to get different characters. Not a big fan of full casts, though I haven't found many for the books I've read.

I love the art style of New Kid and the way the protagonist's drawings are a device for the illustrations. Felt really short and felt like I wanted more from it but it's an important story to tell!

As a sixteen year old who mostly reads YA fantasy, this video gives me hope that one day I will be as well read as you are across multiple genres ❤️
