laura deen is such a great graphic novel! it's quite polarizing i've noticed but i like the melancholy of the book and how flawed and true the characters are. it's a graphic novel that lingers whereas i feel like i've read a lot of graphic novels that i pass over easily then forget about immediately afterward

I first read my mum's copy of Lord of the Rings which is one giant book but he gorgeous artwork, and the maps (but not the appendix) and fell in love with it. Because I loved it so much my parents bought me my own copy but it's a set of 7 (the appendix is a whole separate book), and have very simple black and red covers; I have quite a few Tolkien books with similar covers and I do like that they match, but they are a little plain. While I prefer the one big book, I now have a chronic illness which makes it difficult to hold heavy books.

I LOVE THE GOLDFINCH. It's one of my favourites of all time. At first, I was also intimidated by its length, but soon enough I realised I just don't want to put this book down... but it was very emotional for me on a very personal level, so I don't think this book will do it for everybody. Nevertheless, if you are more a character driven reader, I think you'll love it.

Ariel Bissett Oh wow, that’s great. I read this past January Más allá del Invierno, it follows the story of a young girl from Guatemala, a 62-year-old lecturer from Chile and an American I think, living in New York. I love when you do books hauls cause I love what's new and around. I do have to say though that I think I might be the only person who was bored out of my mind by The Goldfinch. For me, it was mostly the writing, not the story, that bored me, but I did have to read it for a novel writing class in college, so there could have also been that forced aspect that made me dislike the book as well. Which sort of brings me to a greater question I have that I haven't been able to answer for myself yet: how does one fall back in love with reading when something like University has spoiled or changed the experience into an unfun one? I've been struggling to get back into reading for 4 years and I still have no luck with it.

finished “an absolutely remarkable thing” last week and loved it. i was drawn in from the start but the way it slowly, yet consistently vamped up was perfect. i recently played the game “night in the woods” on my switch and i feel like you’d love it, ariel. i know you like stardew valley and animal crossing (so do i) so i’m assuming you have a switch already. nitw is like an interactive cartoon/graphic novel. the character you play as, mae borowski, is a 20 year old cat and recent college drop out. the story follows her return to her hometown of possum springs (based on the historic mining towns of pennsylvania, where the devs grew up) after two years away at school. your goal every in-game day is to just explore possum springs to the fullest extent you feel like. i have never seen mental illness portrayed so accurately and thoughtfully in any media. it is impossible not to care about all the npc’s. mae’s group of friends (bea: a goth socialist alligator, gregg: an enthusiastic kind reckless fox, and gregg’s boyfriend, angus: an introspective supportive intelligent bear) make the game worth playing by themselves but the rest of the npc’s are just as interesting and make you wish you could get to know these characters in real life (or they’ll remind you of people you know/have known in your own life). it’s a brilliant character study with a spooky side-plot mixed in and a deeply personal experience for every player. i sobbed at one character arc that affected me extremely personally. anyway, considering how you love graphic novels i know you’d enjoy this game :-)
