laura deen is such a great graphic novel! it's quite polarizing i've noticed but i like the melancholy of the book and how flawed and true the characters are. it's a graphic novel that lingers whereas i feel like i've read a lot of graphic novels that i pass over easily then forget about immediately afterward

I LOVE THE GOLDFINCH. It's one of my favourites of all time. At first, I was also intimidated by its length, but soon enough I realised I just don't want to put this book down... but it was very emotional for me on a very personal level, so I don't think this book will do it for everybody. Nevertheless, if you are more a character driven reader, I think you'll love it.

I first read my mum's copy of Lord of the Rings which is one giant book but he gorgeous artwork, and the maps (but not the appendix) and fell in love with it. Because I loved it so much my parents bought me my own copy but it's a set of 7 (the appendix is a whole separate book), and have very simple black and red covers; I have quite a few Tolkien books with similar covers and I do like that they match, but they are a little plain. While I prefer the one big book, I now have a chronic illness which makes it difficult to hold heavy books.

finished “an absolutely remarkable thing” last week and loved it. i was drawn in from the start but the way it slowly, yet consistently vamped up was perfect. i recently played the game “night in the woods” on my switch and i feel like you’d love it, ariel. i know you like stardew valley and animal crossing (so do i) so i’m assuming you have a switch already. nitw is like an interactive cartoon/graphic novel. the character you play as, mae borowski, is a 20 year old cat and recent college drop out. the story follows her return to her hometown of possum springs (based on the historic mining towns of pennsylvania, where the devs grew up) after two years away at school. your goal every in-game day is to just explore possum springs to the fullest extent you feel like. i have never seen mental illness portrayed so accurately and thoughtfully in any media. it is impossible not to care about all the npc’s. mae’s group of friends (bea: a goth socialist alligator, gregg: an enthusiastic kind reckless fox, and gregg’s boyfriend, angus: an introspective supportive intelligent bear) make the game worth playing by themselves but the rest of the npc’s are just as interesting and make you wish you could get to know these characters in real life (or they’ll remind you of people you know/have known in your own life). it’s a brilliant character study with a spooky side-plot mixed in and a deeply personal experience for every player. i sobbed at one character arc that affected me extremely personally. anyway, considering how you love graphic novels i know you’d enjoy this game :-)

Isabelle Allende. She has two books that I love, and the thing that I love most about her is the fact that I see stories that happen in Latin America in her books, I feel seen and as such we are not forgotten. I love her books, so if you haven’t read any of her books you should check her out, she writes in English as she does in Spanish too. 😊

Ariel Bissett Oh wow, that’s great. I read this past January Más allá del Invierno, it follows the story of a young girl from Guatemala, a 62-year-old lecturer from Chile and an American I think, living in New York. The book goes back and forth with each character from present to past, from Chile to Guatemala and to Brazil too. Really awesome. I’m currently in the midst of reading Largo Pétalo de Mar. 😊

oh !! i really liked my reading experience with "your house will pay" by steph cha, for all sorts of reasons; the insight that we were brought into through two different perspectives of these two separate families, how informative it was of the riots that occurred towards businesses, particularly some that were asian-owned, in the 90s, and how the author framed the characters whose perspective we were reading from. it was interesting to engage more in the relationship between minorities portrayed in fiction, in where Black- and Asian- Americans clash based on how they're perceived by the public. there was a lot to reflect from it based on my discussions for my lit studies course this semester, especially as we were talking about racial surveillance, and so it was important to understand the implications that come when small observations get blown into a bigger scale. and so ultimately, i respect steph cha for narrating this event from our recent history, and doing so very well
