I LOVE video podcasts, so I was very happy to see this! (Will of course be listening to the full episode today.) We have a similar scenario to Hatchet over here in Australia with 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. It's thrust onto us just before we finish primary school or at the beginning of high school, and it always seems to be a memorable read, even for people who hate reading. Funnily enough, it plays into the theme of survival in the wilderness and features young teenagers!

I'm American, DEFINITELY read hatchet as a child, though not for school. It kinda of fell into that survivalist lit along with My Side of the Mountain (which I LOVED way more than Hatchet). I think maybe my brothers had to read it for boy scouts and I didn't want to miss out? Either way, we all read it. I think a lot of my friends read it as well... I'm in the snack dab middle of America by the Rockies, I'm not sure if that could influence kid lit choices

Recommendation for a cat books: All cats are introverts. A really great poetry collection about cats with cat pictures. The Bob the cat series by James Bowen. It's about James who connects with a cat named Bob. How to think like a cat was also fun to read. Also Dewey the small town library cat who touched the world was fun. A Snowflake in my Hand 🐈 It was one of my favorite books as a kid. I don’t think it’s a kids book though. It’s about a woman who is a vet in a cat clinic. Also All My Patients are Under the Bed about a male cat vet who does at hone visits. I checked those both out constantly from the library and still remember their locations in my head. I have since bought them so I can just have them near.

The Hatchet sequels aren't technical sequels, most of them are "what ifs". Each one sort of explores a different "What if" scenario based on the ending. Brian's Winter is if he didn't get rescued before winter; Brian's Return is what if he went home; they're all different "What ifs". Of them all, Brian's Winter was my favourite. I thought it was really good. Brian's Return was my least favourite.
