This is my first year REALLY diving into the world of reading. One of the only goals I have accomplished in 2020 is my reading! I wanted to read 1 book per month and I have surpassed that goal which I am so proud of myself for! I think for 2021 I am going to try and read two books per month, one fiction and one non fiction. ☺️

I felt SO seen when you started talking about how you struggle to read in Spanish. I'm from an Estonian-English bilingual family and even though I've lived in Estonia my whole life I went to an international school up to the age of 11 and pretty much only read in English (and I read a lot as a child) and I feel exactly the same as you about reading in English vs my other language!!! I struggled so much when I switched to an Estonian school and had to start reading literature in Estonian for class (I ended up just reading summaries of the books if I couldn't find English versions most of the time because I couldn't focus on reading at all) and it was honestly a huge part of why I got put off reading in my teens. I do try to occasionally read Estonian books in Estonian now though, because I do want to follow the local literature here and I've found that if I'm really interested in the book (and it isn't particularly difficult or slow) I can get through it and actually enjoy it. So I would definitely recommend trying to read it in Spanish!! Maybe buy it in both languages and if you don't like the Spanish version you can give it to your mum?

Definitely read Love in the Times of Cholera in Spanish, not only because in my mind you should always try to aim to read any book in the original language if you can (but that's just personal opinion), but specially with Gabriel García Márquez, his greatness comes very much from his prose and the way he writes and I don't think if you can really translate that (I have yet to read an English translation to compare). That being said, I did not enjoy that book in particular lol I prefer A Hundred Years of Solitude way more and!!! if you want to read García Márquez in Spanish but are afraid of big books, you should definitely try Chronicle of a Death Foretold, which is shorter but equally good, and just see if you feel comfortable reading at a slower pace and, in general, if Gabo's style if for you. Love you!!!
@CarolinaRodriguez-jj2hi4 жыл бұрын
I agree! I have only read his work in spanish and it is just amazing. Chronicles of a death foretold is a great short book (I love it) and i'd also recommend A hundred years of solitude over Love in the time of cholera

9:19 Hola, Ariel! Spanish speaker here. My situation is the same but with the languages reversed - I was raised reading books in Spanish, the bookshops sell mostly books in Spanish, etc. However, I've been learning English from a young age, so I was taught to read books in English in order to improve my fluency. Now, my advice for you, Ariel, is that you should definitely read books in Spanish especially if that is the original language they were written in. BUT, do not (and I repeat) DO NOT start your journey reading books in Spanish with a García Marquez book. For your own sanity. I tried reading one of his books in Spanish and it was so hard for me to keep up with the story, and I speak, listen and read Spanish every single hour of every single day! In summary, it's totally worth it to read books in the original languages they are written in if you can, BUT start with an "easier" read. Maybe YA or something lighter in terms of content and how poetic the writer is. Hope this helps! Happy reading nonetheless!

I am SO jealous you can read his stories in the original language! I adore his works and am making my way through his catalogue. First: you are cool, funky, hip, and Instagrammy enough for all of those frames! This year I pivoted my reading goal similarly to yours which was, I stopped pressuring myself to read 2020 releases, stopped reading books out of my comfort zone and focused on reading whatever was making me happy. This year that has meant reaching for rereads, romance, some shorter books and poetry. I think I'll still challenge myself to read 100 books next year because I find that it keeps me reaching for books rather than resorting to social media/things that don't bring me joy.

This year was the first year I did any, though I wasn't particularly active with them online, and found that reading for too long negatively affects my health more than I realised. So next year I want to be more careful with the readathons I join, and hopefully be able to participate more fully without making myself ill (and even though I participate I know I won't read loads of books, as for me it is about reminding myself to read more often, rather than trying to rush through as many books as possible).

My reading/money saving goal for 2020 was to stop buying books and read what I already have! I average between 15-25 books a year depending on length, but was going out and buying 4-5 books at a time multiple times a year. that left me with close to 70 unread books on my shelf, which at the rate I read would take me 2-3 years to get through. So, I stopped buying books and you know what? I loved it! I tackled those huge monster 1200 page books that I never thought I would. I didn't have decision fatigue anymore because each read just narrowed the choices and I think because of that I was able to read more. Maybe "no buy" doesn't work for everyone, but maybe you can focus on the TBR veterans, and if they don't get read then maybe they need to find a new home.

For 2020 my main goal was to read the 20 oldest books on my shelf (that I'd owned for the longest time) and I have read most of them! I really liked this as a year long goal and I realized about halfway through the year that there were several books in that stack I just didn't care to read anymore. Letting myself get rid of them made me feel lighter :) I plan to do the same for next year too!

As a person whose second langauge is English and her first is hungarian, I think you should try to read in spanish. It took me some time to reach the point in reading english like I did in Hungarian but it was like 2-3 books. Nowdays I switch with ease and basically read more books in english, because I want to read books in their original language most of the time.

Loved this video. Yes! You should totally read the book in Spanish. I also recommend Relato de un náufrago also by García Márquez.

I loved Before the Coffee Gets Cold. I haven't heard anyone mention it yet. I read it in March from Netgalley so I've been waiting a looong time to hear someone else's thoughts on it.

Her talking about making goals and not going through is literally me making a goal to read 30 books this year and barely reading 5 books because of lack of motivation. I’m just getting back into reading

I love the blue glasses and the black with silver. You look great in those! Honestly I don't know that I'm going to set any reading goals for next year. College makes reading for fun really difficult, so I guess my goals are to read as much as I can during the summer. But I kind of feel the same way you do- I already have to force myself to read for school, I don't want to force myself to read for fun or I feel like it'll ruin the enjoyment.
