It is nice to hear, many states still allow composting toilets.

I am so proud of all you’ve done and shared, John! You are an amazing problem solver living your best life now. I have all your books and have all your products in my kitchen! I love all the teas- the green tea is my go-to in the evening and is also fantastic iced. It is so smooth and delicious that I think of it as my dessert. Love the blue and red teas, too. The corn flour makes a fantastic cornbread and have also used it to bread tilapia. Keep doing what you’re doing and keep sharing your amazing ideas and progress. You inspire all of us!

I think the (green team project) has done a gray water bucket system, I absolutely love that you do everything with scrap material and what you have available

Great info. I did not know about this being an option. I understand the theory and practical application now. I can't wait to learn more about a black water system.

I love that AZ is doing composting toilets. They are the best solution, they should be everywhere. I kinda hate they have to inspect them though, but I guess it's the best thing yet. I talked to NV and it's like pulling teeth to get info, and the health dept won't even talk to you unless you go in person. Some things you should know before buying some land. If you can't use it or don't have the funds to use it, it's worthless.

I commented on the video from yesterday but you answered the question in this one! I knew how these systems worked but not how many were needed per person! Thanks as always for providing great information ! Also you should look into living machine septic systems, you could create a system like that to clean the “black water” from a kitchen sink for future use!

You could do a worm farm drainage system for a sink. The worm farm will be able to filter out food particulates and grease because of the worm castings and shredded newspaper

Thank you! I recently bought land in Apache County! I would like to do a shed>home conversion and don't want septic in this building, I would prefer to have septic when I build my home which would be on another part of my land.

Yes a blue barrel set up to collect your kitchen sink water with a leach field line they have that in ( chohice ) not spelled correctly county
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
I wish that system was accepted state wide. Perhaps I'll call and ask why not.
@MJ-wz6jo2 жыл бұрын
No harm in asking.

I'm curious if you have a turning device for the toilet. That's one thing I'm churning about in my head. Thinking maybe about using a paint mixer?
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
A compost crank works best but the right paint mixer should work.
@mx52652 жыл бұрын
Hey John learning a lot from your videos unless I missed it how do you get the compost out of the 55 gallon drum
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
When it's ready just pull the lid off and shovel it out. It will basically be soil at that point.
@neilmcmanus37272 жыл бұрын
what tool do you use to stir the human waste barrel, every two weeks ? good explanation, couldn't see clearly into the vent to see the screen setup.
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
They suggest a compost crank. Netting can be installed with hose clamps. I pinned them in place with pvc fittings.

Does the county only approve a composting toilet if you have plans to build a home on that site? Living in your van is temporary according to the county or allowable with no plans to build?
@josephbickman7536 Жыл бұрын
Hey man! Arizona resident here living the apartment life looking to emulate your life style. Can you by chance tell me what county you live in? Trying to find answers like the ones that you provide are hard to come by some times, thanks!
@mgez9192 жыл бұрын
If your allowed, would you be able to add red wiggler composting worms to the barrel?
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
I think you'd have to ask the county. You can always wait the 4 months until it's compost them add worms in that pile.
@jedics12 жыл бұрын
Whats the motivation to making your toilet "compliant" is it to avoid hassles down the road with your business?
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
The county has rules, I simply follow them. To each their own.
@davidhart85752 жыл бұрын
Hey John,did I hear you correctly, that if you have a compost toilet you don't have to have a sectic tank in AZ?
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
Well that's not exactly what I said. You still need to have a black water system. For now I reuse all fat from my skillets. I clean them with paper towels and haul that out. I will build a black water system. Then I can build a home.
@davidhart85752 жыл бұрын
That's great info, I have been looking at properties in AZ, but when I would call the counties,they would all bring up the septic tank..none of them told me about the compost toilet,thanks for making the video
@kaylarobison20042 жыл бұрын
So you can live on your property full time with this and hauling out other waste? We’re trying to find property in AZ where we can be on the property full time and have time before installing septic and building a permanent home.
@parkerazz43852 жыл бұрын
Now.. do deposits have to be made directly into the barrel or can you have a toilet bucket inside then empty to the barrel outside?
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
Using a different toilet would negate the redundancy of the sealed lid and fly trap. I'm sure it would not be permitted.
@RobertsAutomotivePa2 жыл бұрын
John, do you have to use a 55 gal drum? i want to build an outhouse with a lower door in the back outside and be able to slide a full drum out and put an empty one in using a 55 gal drum cut in half, top to bottom not length wise, why do they need to be buried in the ground? can you keep it in a small sealed compartment accessable only from the outside? thanks!
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
This is the only approved DIY compost toilet in the state I'm aware of. It was designed by an engineer who lived of grid 25+ years. You could always submit your plan to your county.
@andrewharrison87822 жыл бұрын
How would you empty the composted bin when its time? Just dig it up and replace the drum surely that would mean another inspection?
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
After four months when it's composted it's pretty easy to shovel it out. You can start a compost pile or use it under trees etc.
@bkym032 жыл бұрын
How far away from your house is it and can you put yeast in to put help with composting?
@FrugalOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
I live in my van but it's about 30 feet away. It needs to be 50 feet from your property line and 10 feet from other buildings. You would have to ask the state about altering the system that's approved.
@bkym032 жыл бұрын

Would they (the county) allow you to use a burn barrel to incinerate your grease? Or greasy paper towel etc that you wipe out you kitchen pans and so forth with? - As a side note, I know that the military in remote areas have incinerated all human waste by dowsing it with diesel fuel and then lighting it on fire.
@pmatt86862 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Just build a tank to float the grease and settle the solids. Kitchen waste.
