This was Arizona’s premiere resort for decades until management started embezzling all the money. They even had to close down a lift at cyclone mountain due to disrepair.

@@ElValuador that's true, I've been going there since the 01/02 season and I've watched its gradual decline, but at least the current management seems to be doing their best to take things in a positive direction.

@@alanwrobleski Here’s hoping. I’ve been going there since the 80’s and was a snowboard instructor in the 90’s. I remember hour plus lift lines before the high speed lift so it’s decline has been breathtaking. They didn’t even open after a mid week snow storm in the beginning of march last year.

Glad you got to see Sunrise Jonathon. I got stuck on that back peak pow also. They dont open it much back there except weekends. The Apache Indians run this place and during the week very low crowds doesnt suck. This the best in Az imo.

This is my home mountain. Cool place to learn to snowboard and follow all your tips! The lifts can be tricky to figure out as they change when they run. But having a good mountain basically to yourself during the week is great learning ground.

Pretty sure i was there that day, sucks i missed you! I'm a PHX native and Sunrise is where I primarily ride, Snowbowl as well. Unfortunately they do close cyclone lodge mon - thurs which kinda sucks, but the worst part is that the only other high speed lift (the one with out the cable) broke a few years back. The resort deemed it unrepairable and removed the cable. There is no other lifts that service cyclone peak, so now the alternative is to go to apache peak and ski down to a rope tow that will take you to the top of cyclone (just wound up for the first time in march 2024) Sunrise is now more of a ski hill than a resort in all honesty. It's on native land, and owned by the tribe. Management was bad for a decade or so from 2010-2020 and the place really went downhill, which was sad as I have a lot of fond memories there as a kid. Like someone else said, it used to be the premiere place to ski in AZ, but years of bad management sent it downhill. Fortunately new management took over a couple years ago and a lot of improvements have been being made, and i'm hopeful for its future. The biggest downside currently being the lift infrastructure. I'm glad someone reviewed it! never thought id see it in a ski review video, so thank you!

Unfortunate you missed out on cyclone. It’s open Thurs-Sun via Apache Peak to a tow rope. There’s some good terrain there, but the two fixed grip slow lifts to get back to the tow rope really kill it. Honestly if they had a detachable quad to the peak of Cyclone from the Cyclone Circle lodge that mountain would be amazing.

Sunrise has decent terrain. Unfortunately, the best is on cyclone peak where they removed a slow chair a few years ago and never replaced it. The mountain needs some major lift and facility upgrades but it's on reservation land so it'll probably take forever to happen.

They need to work on that a bit. Just basic mountain hospitality and operations. You can see in the video they had opened an area that didn't even have the lift spinning yet. There's no way out of that area without riding the lift. That's unacceptable. 😬

maybe a few years ago it was but its great now! The new GM is a guy from vail and they have made MASSIVE improvements to everything. All the lodges have been remodeled, base camp hotel is getting a complete remodel. Lifts are being improved, albeit slowly. The food is great. They have wifi/great cell service. Only reason cyclone lift closed was a guy died doing maintenance on it.

@adamturecekk they need some Vail money to improve their lifts. Base to summit from the cyclone base would be huge. I asked them about replacing the cyclone lift and they asked if I had 10 million dollars to pay for it. Yet they're putting in a summertime alpine coaster. 😒

@@christopherskelly6492 it's better to set the bindings back for riding deep pow as it helps keep the nose-up and out of the snow (otherwise you're constantly leaning back to get it up which causes more rear leg burn and fatigue). The alternative is to have the nose submarining through the pow.
