From 2012 until 2024 (when Arizona relocated to Utah) - Winnipeg (834,678) had better attendance than Phoenix (4,845,832) every year from 2012 to 2024 - Winnipeg had better franchise valuations than Phoenix every year from 2011 to 2024 - the MOMENT they relocated to Winnipeg - they became more valuable than the team in Phoenix... - Winnipeg generated ($4.9 million USD) for the NHL between 2012-2021 Phoenix lost ($141.6 million USD) during that span... A Canadian city, with 800 thousand people - was more valuable and generated more money than a team in America, using American dollars, with 4.8 million people... @@ElmerFudd16 TV ratings were crap too. Arizona proved they aren't a legitimate hockey market time and time again. They also had numerous owners, none of whom could make it work. People who have run successful teams and businesses before couldn't make it work with assistance from the NHL. No chance they go back. Also, expecting taxpayers to not build the arena and hoping a team goes back shows an incredible level of disconnect. If you want a team, you have to build the arena. Don't wanna pay? Here are 20 other markets that will, including multiple markets like Quebec and Hamilton that have move in ready NHL arenas (Hamilton is finishing a massive renovation to the Coliseum, Quebec has a move in ready arena).

@@thedrunkenwobblies1331What a terrible take. Small markets like Sunrise and Salt Lake have a team, who are both seeing great fan engagement and support. It takes competent ownership, which the Yotes never had. Arizona is a huge state, they absolutely would support hockey if it was marketed correctly and they had a team that wasn't missing the playoffs almost every year. Even Canadian teams like Ottawa have had terrible attendance in years where the team stunk. Hope the coyotes franchise gets revived to prove people like you wrong.
@thedrunkenwobblies1331
@thedrunkenwobblies1331 15 күн бұрын
@@UtahHockeyFan9 you can have small markets that support teams, and large markets that don't. Arizona is in the latter. I don't buy the 'bad ownership is the reason nobody showed up'. Lots of bad owners all over sports, and fans still show up to games, so I'm not buying it. When more money is spent in daily green fees in a day in the Phoenix area, than the Coyotes made in a season, there is a problem. Hell, you could get season tickets for the cost of a round at some golf courses in that area, and the golf courses are full and the arena is not. I had a relative that played for the Coyotes. He said it was the worst fan support of the 6 places he played in the league, which also included smaller markets like Buffalo and Calgary. He said he wished Arizona had 10% of the support the players got in those other cities. The fanbase isn't there. It was an experiment to bring new people to the game, and it failed miserably.

@@thedrunkenwobblies1331 Lol clearly you've never met many coyotes fans. They had many diehard fans, myself included. In the 90's and early 2000's we had packed houses at every game when they had come from Winnipeg. It's only when the team started being trash when the casual fans stopped watching and attendance took a dip. Even in 2012 when they made the playoffs they had packed houses. Fans like a winning team no matter what city they're in. And the diehards always stood by their side, like in any city. I don't believe for a second that you "had a relative in the league", but even if that's true Buffalo and Calgary are not small hockey markets. One is New York state which is full of sports fans. Why do you think the IIHF host so many tournaments in Buffalo? Plus their are lots of Canadians that live in Buffalo that support the Sabres. And the Bills are one of the most popular teams in the NFL. Calgary is a crappy city and all they have is hockey, so their fans have always been good. With the right owner, the Coyotes can and will be successful. I root for Utah now because it's still my team but in a different city, but if the Yotes get revived I will make them my second team and still support them.

The Coyotes had great crowds the first few seasons after moving to Winnipeg. What started the decline was failure to have a new arena built or at least a deal for one in place. Playing in then-America West Arena was not sustainable due to the 4,000 obstructed-view seats (the arena was designed for basketball first and foremost). The Glendale arena that was ultimately built was a magnificent facility…except, it should have been on the east side of Phoenix in Scottsdale or Tempe rather than on the westernmost side of town.

Thanks for the update Brodie! Long are the days when the Kings were the only west coast team. Going to 36 is the natural progression for the growth of the league and the NHL has pioneered new markets of late with Las Vegas. Having a greater density of teams in the Western Conference would be helpful with growing the interest in the league. And the bring back the 6 division-6 team concept which would focus on more divisional rivalries. Arizona would fill that gap in the southwest, while the addition of Houston and Atlanta would cover more of the southeast region, plus a in-state Texas rivalry.

Two things. One. There was always money for a team in Phoenix. And a fanbase. The problem is that it would need to be collectivized - a corporation or some other crowdfunding structure. But NHL, like all the other major pro sports leagues in North America, is slavishly devoted to the "horseracing model", which requires that ONE GUY (usually an incompetent trust fund baby like John Fisher) show up with a bucket of cash for a franchise. Then they pilfer the public for the venue. "Privatize the profit, publicize the debt." Been going on since the railroads were born...Two. A lot of the drag on the Coyotes came - not from bad fans - but from squabbling local governments, along with godawful ownership. The county getting involved helps, but the NIMBY attitude is still there amongst the tribe of cities that kicked the team around like a football. And putting it miles out of town out in an abandoned cotton field will not work. Draw a triangle between Sky Harbor, the Scottsdale Airport, and ASU Main, and that's where it needs to go. Not much land left, high political resistance, and grandstanding politicians like the ex-Scottsdale mayor, stand in the NHL's way. To do it right in PHX, the NHL is going to have to evolve and embrace new franchising strategies that give upstarts more power and more capital (financial and political) to get it done...I would say the same thing is true in Tampa with the Rays, where MLB stands in MLB's way...My own two cents worth? Tempe Diablo Stadium. Start a range war with MLB if you need to, but who cares? The Angels can play in one of the other dozen or so ballparks in the area. TDS is old - outdated by MLB's own standards. Kick them out and tear it down. Build your new Coyotes arena there. About the same footprint. Add some parking. Prior use status as a sports venues gets the NIMBY witches out of the picture...But that won't happen. Why? Because it makes too much sense, and it's too economical...

I've seen TV commercials about hockey camps and there are watch parties for the VGK. As a VGK fan since day fing 1, there was no issue with who I would support. I was definitely sad to see the Coyotes go, and i do hope an NHL team cam come back here ASAP so I can attend games here to watch my Knights beat them 🤣

@CoelhoSports if you did your research which you slightly tried to do but ultimately failed at, you'd know that the 11k is only the unobstructed seating, which is what the NHL only allows to be counted. The team however is averaging around 16k if you add in the obstructed seating, which they arent counting towards official attendance. Which by my calculations is just under the average attendance for the whole league at around 17k. And once the arena's renovations are complete, The Delta will hold over 18k. The State of Utah is giving the team everything Arizona refused to.

I think the NHL is desperate to get back into Atlanta, and goimg from 32 to 34 is better than going from 32 to 33. The NHL could run each conference as a single table if they expand to 34 - play your conference rivals 3 times each, and teams in the other conference 2 times; (16 x 3) + (17 x 2) = 82 games. I also suspect the NHL has taken note of the NBA's play-in tournament and sees an opportunity to monetize a similar arrangement.

Absent an NHL team, placing an AHL team in Phoenix could make sense. AHL is the top minor professional league in N America, as was the old Western Hockey League in the 60s and 70s. The WHL Roadrunner teams were beloved by fans. They drew good crowds, as did the International Hockey League Roadrunners in the 90s. There are good hockey fans in Phoenix and they'd undoubtedly welcome Roadrunners back with open arms. An AHL team will also offer a more family friendly ticket price. If hockey villain Alex Meruelo, who once promised to relocate his AHL Roadrunners from Tucson to Phoenix, follows through on moving the Tucson franchise to Reno, NV instead, the AHL would have to grant a new franchise to Phoenix. Looking at the Tucson Roadrunners' attendance figures, a Phoenix AHL team would likely be a able to fill Mullet Arena. The franchise that could only be named Roadrunners if Meruelo signed over the naming rights, and he'd probably only do it for an exorbitant fee.

I do think the NHL is better positioned than the other pro leagues to make the jump to 36. Being popular in Canada has gotten them to 32 on the backs of markets the NFL, NBA, and MLB would never consider, while leaving large US markets like Phoenix, Atlanta, and Houston available. That's 3 prime options right there, and there are other viable small-medium markets that are definitely doable like Kansas City, Portland, or Quebec. A second (and probably third) Toronto area team would be financially viable, although league politics would obviously be a hurdle. Versus where are the other leagues going to expand at this point? The NBA and MLB (sort of) are obviously trying to get into Las Vegas, but then what?

Quebec City and Hartford have no hope as long as the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins keep blocking them (they wanted to save Cincinnati and Birmingham in 1979, but had politically weaker owners back then compared to today). 6 divisions x 6 teams each=36 teams. *Pacific:* Anaheim, Las Vegas, Arizona, Los Angeles, San Jose, Utah *Northwest:* Colorado, Calgary, Seattle, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver *Central:* Houston, Nashville, Minnesota, Dallas, St. Louis, Milwaukee *Northeast:* Buffalo, Ottawa, Boston, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal *Metro:* Pittsburgh, N.Y. Islanders, Columbus, Philadelphia, N.Y. Rangers, Chicago (strong political allies like Detroit and Toronto will help Chicago move East ahead of Nashville) *Atlantic:* Miami, Atlanta, Washington, Tampa Bay, Raleigh, New Jersey (strongarmed away from the others after Pittsburgh and Chicago demand that Columbus stays in the Metro over the Brooklyn Dodgers of ice hockey)

The approach to scheduling games would need to change and a grassroots effort to develop officials needs to be made. Both USA Hockey and Hockey Canada have cited difficulties in getting refs for youth games, and if only the best of the best make it to the NHL, that becomes a really small pool when you get to the premier level of professional leagues - unless they go back to the old system of one ref on the ice as they used to (not that I advise that).

I’d say it’s because they have a passionate fan base - they don’t need to market the game to try and lure fans as they would if they were to enter a new market. The problem was 100% ownership. Look at Chicago - Bill Wirtz was a horrible owner that pushed fans away and kept the team off of TV. When he died and his son Rocky took over with an entirely different way of running things, the fans came back and the team saw success almost immediately. (Yes, there were some major problems that were revealed later, but that doesn’t take away from the impact of new ownership).

It's a big market. I think they should be behind Houston in terms of priority tho

Come on. They just lost their team. I feel bad for the loyal fans, but they left for a reason. If they really wanted the team, they should have tried harder to save it, so that Utah could have gotten a real expansion team.

Winnipeg relocated to Phoenix in 1996 - and Phoenix never generated revenue for the NHL in 28 years.... Winnipeg came back in 2012... Fun Fact: Quebec City (839,311) has more people than Winnipeg (834,678) #QuebecNordiques

I hope its a relocated team. The NHL has about as much business expanding to 36 teams as MLS does. No one else has more than 32 teams. That being said I want a team back in Phoenix but do it the proper (centrally located arena, strong ownership group) way. Relocate the Jets or Carolina, they are in worthless, nothing, AHL-at-best markets anyway and won't be missed. But the NHL needs NHL teams in Atlanta, Houston, and Phoenix to make up for their permanent handicap of having 7 teams in Canada. Hurts their TV deal down in the states.

You are a Ron-Ed-Tom-Alvin-Rod-Don if you think Winnipeg is relocating! Metro New York City has too many teams! Get rid of one of them instead! Also, I bet networks won't complain when the NFC East becomes an all euro division, when the NFL expands to 36 teams, thus you are an Alice-Sal-Sam-Harry-Otto-Lisa-Edith if you think Canada should lose more teams!

@@psychopathyoutubeemployees280 LOL I'm Elon Mush compared to you, President Biden. Winnipeg is and will always be a minor league market unless they discover a trillion dollars worth of oil or something underneath its prairies. Eh?

@@mikehalkides7044 and they charge peanuts for their ticket prices. And how much money do they make there overall? Whats the team value? More to it the just selling tickets. Raleigh is vastly inferior compared to Houston.
