So what happens to all the Agate, Specimens, etc. that we find on out Outings? Well my friends along with the Collecting and Arizona Exploring we process some of our finds with a Rock Tumbler. Rock tumblers are a great way to get the kids involved and the results can be quite amazing.
If you would like to help support our adventures and make an outing or two, check out my Patreon channel.

I wish I still had my lapidary unit. (lost it when I got divorced). Fire Agate and Opal were my specialty. Loved the discovery of fire.

Looking forward to the end results Bill, When Judy and I tumble rough stones like that , that are pitted... I take them to the tile way and rough shape them to help speed up the tumbling time...I sure hope you find some good fire in a few of those.

Great video Bill. I never tried to tumble fire agate. I used a diamond trim saw to cut away the milky colors and then a lapidary wheel to buff windows to the color. If color was apparent I would use the trim saw and cut a piece to make a free form cabachon. I never went to Saddle Mountain but went to a claim by Oatman and another around Chloride.

I did okay at Oatman. It was a day fee claim. The location by Chloride was all agate without the fire. I think the fire is from iridescent limonite.

I have a fire agate 🔥 and let me tell you. It's beautiful. I just need to tumble it a little bit more. How many gemstone collector and Agate. My second favorite Is Carnelian Agates. Let me tell you friend's, it was not easy to get. An old friend owns a mine in Arizona and he comes down to me fiance Native American gatherings/PowWows. Ended up talking and talking to a dude and ended up becoming close friends. He also has fire opal and omg I wanted one lol. That would be my birthstone, Opal. 👑

Hi! Grateful for the info! I know this post is hella old, but I'll ask me questions anyways and hope for an answer🤞 ......the kids and I rockhound down in Safford/ Thatcher area every year to twice a year(they really love it❤) and the agates/ fire agate/chalcedony we have is beginning to pile up! We have a small tumbler, but everything on the net says "do not tumble fire agate!!!", so first I wanna say thanks for the vid! I really REALLY appreciate the step by step. I do have one question tho.... when you would get on and say for instance "its been 10 days", do you mean from the beginning or since you last opened it? Thanks!! New to tumbling and don't wanna mess up tooooo terribly!!

You’re not going to mess them up. You might decide Togo back and redo them. I am also new to tumbling and I’m doing “fire agates” from Saddle mountain in Tonopah. Depending on your preference of what your rocks to look like. I’ve been tumbling a batch since Christmas 2023. I finished them but started the over due to the small pits. All around the pits had an amazing shine. They are extremely hard stone. Good luck.

Very interesting vid Bill. Did not know you would have to tumble for so long. Here I’m thinking tumbling old coins and jewelry for half hour is plenty. No wonder they add 5 belts to your kit when you buy the tumbler. .
