Arizona murder victim from 1988 identified after nearly 40 years

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said remains found in a remote area in 1988 were identified as Evelyn “Dottie” Lees, who was 88 or 89 years old when she died.

Someone has been collecting her SSI checks for all these years. Never reported missing? No death certificate. Sadly, this is why this woman was murdered.

I agree. So heartbreaking that an elderly woman was never reported missing. Family had to realize when she suddenly disappeared and caring family members would have questioned where she was. What were her friends told? May she RIP and receive justice.

No, someone collected her checks for a decade before dying themselves. And yes, she definitely was murdered. As to why she wasn't reported missing, there are a lot of details lacking about her life, such as whether she was married or had relatives. Some people have relatives and never speak to them.

I can't think of anything more heartbreaking than living to be 88 years old, being murdered for your social security check, and no one reports you missing. No one looks for you. No one. Where in God's name was this woman's family that no one looked for her or went to the cops?? Even if she had no immediate family (no spouse, children or grandchildren), what about siblings, nieces and nephews? No neighbors or church friends? Good grief, I am absolutely heartbroken for this lady. I hope we get an update with more info about this. Good job by the DNA Doe Project. Bless your soul and rest in peace, Miss "Dottie" 💔

It’s a huge thing in Japan 😢 sooo many elderly people are dying alone so often they have a name for it. They even have communities in place that constantly check on their neighbors to make sure they are okay

In response to the comments: Y'all aren't understanding my comment. I was asking why they didn't go after the person who kept pulling out of her pension fund after she died. Obviously they can't do anything now. But why didn't they do anything back then? You can't just pull out of a dead person's pension fund for that long unless the company in control of the pension fund is just flat out fiscally negligent, in which case saidcompany should've been investigated for financial malpractice.
