In the spring of 2022 I thru hiked the Arizona Trail. Here is a run down of what didn't work and what did work on my Arizona Trail thru hike. These are my experiences and may or may not be the same as your experience and doesn't mean that some of the gear that didn't work for me won't work for you. Cheers!

Congrats on your new book project! My plan is to hike the AZT next early spring, so I will be looking out for your book. I was wondering about the issue(s) you had with Tarptent Montrail, thanks for covering the gear that performed well and also didn't meet expectations. Great video, see ya in the next one!!

Interesting thoughts on the kit and good luck with the book 📕 I do bikepacking and take a few 10,000 power banks. Not that I will run out but I’ve been on trips when I’ve had my batteries fail on me, but because I take more than one it’s great to have a back up. It also means when I’m charging one, I have one in use if needed. 👍🙂

I'm doing a section end of March from the border to Patagonia. I was on the fence about the sunbrella. Now I think I'll leave it. For backwashing my Sawyer, I use a smartwater bottle with the sport cap. It fits perfectly!

Nice video Putt Putt, I was wondering how your Esbit stove worked out for you
@AdventurePlusMe
@AdventurePlusMe Жыл бұрын
My esbit stove worked great on this trip. I chose that one on this particular trip because I wasn't sure of how available fuel would be on the trail...especially the little canisters. I bought some esbit tablets in Tuscon before hitting the trail and those lasted me until I got to Flagstaff. Then in Flagstaff I bought the last bit of esbit tabs to get me the rest of the way to Utah. I will say, the esbit stove is really only good if all you need to do is boil water. It's not really good for doing any real cooking. Cheers!

Sun hoodie is a must. I use it nowadays both for bikepacking and hiking,. Alternative is a merino wool T-shirt with detachable sleeves and a buff. I use both for biking and hiking.
@AdventurePlusMe

Yeah, I used a sun shirt, but not hoody and I wish that I had the hoody instead, lol! I ended up fashioning a “vail” out of a light buff, that I used with my hat, which worked ok. But I’d really like to try a hoody

Thank you for this run-down! I recently have purchased the Apple 13 mini, but I am wondering if I need to be looking for a USB-C battery bank, or if my current USB battery banks are sufficient. Does your battery bank have a USB-C connection? Also, the tent story was very instructive. I hadn’t thought about pitching a tent on clay soils in the rain until now! Yuck! What a nightmare!
@AdventurePlusMe
@AdventurePlusMe Жыл бұрын
I used a battery bank that had the old usb output. So, the cord is a usb to apple lightning. The iphone 13 mini is charged via the lightning. You just have to make sure that the cable you are using is lightning on one side, and whatever the output for the battery bank is, that's what the other side of the cable will be. Hopefully I explained that correctly.
@daven.7685
@daven.7685 Жыл бұрын
@@AdventurePlusMe Yes. I will use the lightning cable that came with the phone, and there is no need upgrade my battery bank unless I want it to charge faster. Thanks!

Did you ever need to prefilter your water to remove the bigger particles and if so, what was your approach?
@AdventurePlusMe
@AdventurePlusMe Жыл бұрын
I never used a pre filter. I just made sure I didn’t scoop any of the bigger particles. Using the little scooper was pretty effective. I just had to pay attention to what I was scooping. And I did backflush my filter regularly while on trail.

What about a sun hat? Otherwise I would recommend Outdoor Vitals Altitude Sun Hoodie, it is pretty awesome.
@AdventurePlusMe
@AdventurePlusMe Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's another option I would consider. At some point I created a "sun hat" by cutting a buff and using in conjunction with my sunday mornings hat to make a wrap around neck/ear cover. It looked terrible, but it did the trick, lol!
