I find these ultralight kit lists fascinating, but there is one thing I wouldn’t compromise on - hot drinks, cup-a-soups, noodle meals, etc. A Speedster Stove weighs just a few grams, and you have hot meals in a mug. Cold soaking?! What?! Still - hats off to you guys, you are an interesting lot 👍🏻😁

I’m in the process of trimming down my hiking gears to go lightweight. Thanks for sharing this vid. So stoked for your hiking videos to come. Keep safe man.

Nice to see the pa’lante ultralight in action. Arguably my fav pack ever produced. Great kit you have, keep the content coming. Cheers.

Thanks man, it's definitely my favourite pack that I've hiked with so far! I used the Zpacks Nero before this but the Pa'lante pack is so much better. I'll have lots of videos coming soon on the Arizona trail and then the Continental Divide Trail soon after that!

I like your set up. I have shaved off a bunch of weight over the years hiking and backpacking. I figured out that the majority of time out backpacking is spent on the trail and not at camp, so it makes sense to make the trail time more comfortable. Lighter, easier... I have been planning on starting the AZT around the same time as you, but haven't fully committed. You've inspired me. Thanks for sharing.
@WaldoTheBareNecessities2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree, when I'm hiking alone I pretty much hike from sunrise to sunset and then just go to sleep. I also sleep pretty easily, so I definitely value the comfort of having a light pack while hiking much more than the comfort items I could bring for camp. Maybe I'll see you out there, I start next week!

Well said. People see Instagram and think backpacking is all hunky dory, parties every night around the campfire, etc., but reality is wake up, hike, set up camp as fast as possible, eat quickly then pass out. Wake up and do it all over again.

I like how you can go so minimal, but that ground is cold. That top quilt is great but I would need extra ground insulation. Maybe a cheap full size foam pad plus a torso size self inflating pad.
@WaldoTheBareNecessities2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was concerned I might be too cold on the AZT so I actually also brought a thermarest z lite foam pad (cut down to torso length too). But on the first night I camped high at close to 9000ft and just tried using on the super thin pad shown in the video. I was totally fine, it snowed and was well below freezing temperatures but I was easily warm enough. Ended up ditching the thermarest pad as soon as I reached the first town.

Excited to see someone with barefoot shoes hiking the AZT! I’ll be starting in a couple weeks with some Xero shoes and a similar (but heavier) pack setup. Hopefully i can cut some pack weight on trail, thanks for sharing!
@WaldoTheBareNecessities2 жыл бұрын
Awesome, maybe I'll see you on trail! I'm starting March 10th. Which Xero shoes are you using? I've done some thru hiking with the vivobarefoot shoes and they have held up really well

Excellent gear choices and the weight is sick. Very cool, thanks for sharing how you got to 5.5lb base weight. You've got room for water 'cause you will need it on the AZT. Cheers!
@WaldoTheBareNecessities2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The pack has lots of space in both side pockets to fit some large water bottles. I'm bringing a 4 litre capacity, but could have room for 6 with this pack quite easily.

Hey man class of 21’ here. Looks like a killer setup. Will say durability of shoes might be an issue but I rocked altra lone peaks and only switched out in flagstaff. Also I started with poly for my ground sheet as well, but would suggest getting Tyvek. Also didn’t see a water filter. Sawyer squeeze worked great just remember to back flush with all the cow pond water. Best of luck to you!! Any questions just ask
@WaldoTheBareNecessities2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! Why did you switch to tyvek? Was the poly falling apart? I'm bringing a katadyn befree but if it gets clogged too easily then I'll switch to sawyer squeeze.
@EDCAdventures19912 жыл бұрын
@@WaldoTheBareNecessities combination of the rocky ground and thorns/cactus. Lots of holes and started to tear a bit. Ah okay didn’t see the be free. Saw a few on trail but most said that theirs started to clog pretty bad

Wearing xeros, I Did run in the superstitions from Superior to lake Roosevelt and was in tears on the third day after 7 miles for that day. Highly recommend a insole that protects the bottoms of your feet
@WaldoTheBareNecessities2 жыл бұрын
I'm in Superior right now. Are the superstitions worse than the rest of the trail? So far my feet are doing fine, 300 miles in with the vivobarefoot shoes.

Hi Great kit. We have a matching jacket. I took it on the pct last summer .... managed to do half before fire closures. The ee jacket worked out well. I guess the azt isn't as buggy? I'm always tempted to use a tarp but I think I would have lost my mind. I have the zpacks altaplex. Also women are anatomically different than men. ....I'm sure you've noticed 😉 and most women carry weight better on our hips. Also we have a more pronounced suprascapular notch (hiked with an anatomy professor) in our shoulders, so thin straps really dig in. The ultralight backpack companies are mostly designing some variation of the palante packs and would do well to come up with a pack that is designed in reverse order for women. Nice wide wrap the hips belt and wider shoulder straps ... they dont have to be super cush but some. The gossamer gear g4-20 is closest I've found. Far, far more comfortable. There's plenty of women out there for the market. The lite af pack that I had was excruciating by comparison but it had that bottom pocket and that is the bees knees for sure. I imagine you're cold soaking? The ruta locura sells a 7 inch titanium sherpards hook stake. That added length worked well for me at 6grams I think. Best wishes.

@joseph_p2 жыл бұрын
I can comfortably sleep on a 1/8” in warm weather, but It doesn’t do a lot to keep me warm when it’s colder. I’ve just always preferred sleeping on firmer surfaces. I even used to sleep on the floor a lot as a kid (by choice).

Hippe Jake ha! I've only ever seen you with short hair on your CDT trek. I kindof like this haircut better, less tactical though 😁 I'll have to look back your AZT journey this winter after hunting season. Curious how you handle your water in the desert. Will be interesting to find out.
