A long time ago it was customary in the British army for a soldier to raise his hat to an officer to greet him. He, in turn, would raise his hat in acknowledgement of that greeting and to return the greeting. The problem was that this happened so frequently the brim of the hat would become warn and damaged. So the salute was introduced to replace the raising of the hat.

Thanks for the additional info. Seems there are a couple reasons for the salute origin then.

Greetings from Ireland. Over here in the Catholic church in the olden day's men would take their hat's off, that is still observed although men typically don't wear hat's over here any more, I feel like the only one that does. Women on the other hand were required to wear a hat, scarf or something to cover their head. Men had to sit on one side of the isle and women on the other, I guess that stopped any distractions.

I started wearing my hat a year ago when i started working outside. I was surprised at watching this, how much came natural to me. I wasn't raised in the west, meaning Arizona but spent a lot of time growing up in South Texas where the old punchers were. They used to run thr cattle through my uncles neighborhood back in the days of driving up from Texas to Canada and Back to the Union Stock Yards. Well, I take my hat off in a place of respect or where women are. In stores that is an exception but I do tip my hat when acknowledging women. I take it off at grace but I also leave it on when I am faced with a person whom I view as one who does not deserve my respect. I will take my hat off if I am in the presence of the owner of my company but my boss I will not. I am not so touchy about others touching my hat aside from having to move it if it is in the seat of the truck or so on, but I won't let anyone wear it or mess with it. Not like Dirty Dan

I was lucky enough to have a grandfather who lived during the dying ages of the "west" and the Victorian era. He was born in 1898. When I was three or four in the early 90s him and my mom took me to a Tractor Supply Store while I was wearing a ball cap. I was papaw's favorite and could do no wrong, but when I stepped through the front doors of that store, that hat got snatched like lightning off my head by papaw. "Gentlemen don't wear their hats indoors." I still take my hat off when I go inside places all these years later.

Arizona Ghostriders - Hat's off to you for this video. Always good to learn stuff. Donning and doffing, I didn't know that. I knew that the salute evolved from men at arms raising their visors to show their faces. It follows that tipping the hat would come from that. Shaking hands was a mutual agreement to leave weapons aside. I also knew that a hat on the bed was a invitation for Murphy to visit, just didn't know it was something that was around in the old west. Is it acceptable to hang a hat on a bed post or is that courtin' trouble too? Thanks guys!

Actually Beetle Shellack was used in western hats to keep them stiff. Some city hats as well. It was added during the felting process. There was a big battle between Stetson and Resistol back when the Stetson factory shut down and Stetson which was a softer western hat became stiffer as they switched their factory to make hats more accommodated to the rodeo world. I know because I was their creative director and archived a lot of Stetson's history.

(I've read conflicting sources on this. Some say a guy never tips or doffs to another male. Some say a man doesn't doff when passing or speaking to another man, but he might tip his hat slightly to say, "Hello," "Thank you," "You're welcome," or "Goodbye.")

This may or may not be true but it would make sense considering how valuable a good hat was: I've heard that a big reason for leaving your hat on in a saloon or other public place where one might spend a decent amount of time, is because a hat left on a table or anywhere out of sight could quickly become a stolen hat.

@@ArizonaGhostriders Ah yes, that would also make sense, hadn't thought about that!

Both are good reasons. I've had to leave my gun with the bartender in Tombstone while in the saloon. Made me itchy the whole time. My expensive property out of eyesight and reach...

@@ArizonaGhostriders I've been fortunate enough to never be asked to disarm myself, I imagine I'd be nervous as a chicken in a fox den. By the way, thank you for taking the time to respond to these comments. I just discovered your channel yesterday and I love it 👍

I need a cowboy hat I really like the one Viggo Mortensen wore in Appaloosa
If I remember right with the hat superstition, you can place it on the bed so long as it's upside down. At least that's what my grandparents always taught me. They said it keep the luck from falling out.
@ArizonaGhostriders4 жыл бұрын
I think that's viable.

😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 Some of y'all's acts are priceless. Question... If a cowboy is on a cattle drive and his horse loses a shoe, do they carry the equipment they'll need in the Chuck wagon? Just saying... It would look a bit weird to be packing an anvil in the saddle bags. Lol
@ArizonaGhostriders4 жыл бұрын
Yes, they do carry everything on the Chuckwagon. Bedrolls, guns, tools...

You forgot the most important rule of them all which Dan dominated for us. You mess with another mans hat you buy him a hat.

You might have mentioned that when a man met another man, IF the one man was a lot older, the younger would touch the brim of his hat with his fore finger. He could slightly bend the brim if he felt inferor to the other man. If one man told another to do something, the other might touch the brim of his hat with his fore finger as kind of a salute, and/or a sign that he would do what was asked of him. Men could just casually touch the brim of their hats with their forefingers just in passing each other with nothing ment to it than a slight show of respect
@ArizonaGhostriders6 жыл бұрын
I read that out West men didn't acknowledge other men by touching the hats (that was for women). They just nodded. This was verified by a couple old Arizonans I know. However, glad to have the input.

Never ever tip, doff or remove your hat in deference to another man! Women only.
