I've got a great photo of my great great great or so Grandmother who lived out west. At first I always through she was wea r in a fancy bonnet but it turned out to be one of those brimmed hats it hour a crown to it. Has the sides turned up. What I thought was once a fancy hat turned out to be her hair out the top, the hat was used for the style to keep it in place. Doing up your hair for a lady must have been a difficult ordeal in the Frontier, yet the ladies still managed to look beautiful and work in dresses. What a time it must have been!

Victorian hair was definitely interesting. Women's hair was long with various styles to put it up when needed. Hairpins helped. Men's hair varied, particularly on the Frontier. Even the U.S. Army decided to begin enforcing hair regulations in the 1880s. Check out the hair in Deadwood.

U S Grant had a low opinion of young officers with their hair parted in the middle. The trail driving cowboys generally let their hair grow long until they hit the rail head. Then they took a bath, got a shave and a haircut and bought some fancy clothes. One settler in Texas was feeding a man who came to the table with his hat on. When the settler asked him to take his hat off, the man exposed where he had been scalped by the Indians. Cowboys tended to take their hats off indoors, but over time they wore them while eating at a cafe. Recently a man was reported to have worn his cap throughout a funeral service in Arkansas, a backward state, northeast of Texas. At a cattleman's convention in Fort Worth, early in the 20th century, one of the things to do, was to get your mustache blacked. The highlight was when a cowman's buddies grabbed him, showed him a hot branding iron, exposed a patch of his skin, then applied a piece of ice to the spot. I saw no reports of killings, but I'm pretty sure salty threats were made.

Custer's nickname at West Point was "Cinnamon", because he favored cinnamon scented hair oil. Quite the dandy! I learned a lot about General Custer as I portrayed James H Kidd who began his cavalry career with the 6th Michigan Vol Cav and rose in rank to Brigadeer General commanding the Michigan Brigade after Custer was promoted to divisional command. His book, "Recollections of a Calvaryman" is an excellent resource for information and insight. His description of his initial response to first seeing General Custer was, "He sat his horse as if to the manner born..." but his first impression of Custer's velveteen uniform was "of a circus rider gone mad..." WOLVERINES!
