I embrace your nerdness. I remember years back when the book Packing Iron about period western gun carrying came out. I spotted it at the local library. When I went to check out, the librarian said, "When we got that in, I was wondering who would read it. I should have known it would be you.". So I understand comepletely.

Loved this episode! I wear modern-day vests all the time. Though intentionally try not to look like a biker. Especially love Winter vests. They keep my torso warm, but still allow free range of movement of both my arms and my shoulders. Plus, yeah; those extra pockets are great.

The pockets, what sold me about 40 yrs ago, they come in hand. I’m a pocket watch kind of guy (have about dozen or so) and they look good hanging on my vests (also over a dozen) have a problem, collecting things I like, ie: vests, watches, hats, boots etc, one these days “The Old Lady’s gone shoot me. Oh yea got a bunch of those too (lever action and single action) think I might have a problem 🤪. Nice vid, 👍🏼❤️🤠

They also wore the single vest alone because of the heat. They were just as stressed by the heat as we are today & found ways to combat the heat. Even women around the house wore simple dress smocks & used cottons of light color during the summer's when going out.

Santee, you might have to do a follow-up on this one! Something thats always bothered me about vests is that little cut out at the bottom. No "vest" I've ever seen in history ever had that. Yet, almost every place sells them like that. Also the back. "Vests" are usually made of a silky material, while the front is made of something tougher, like canvas, etc. I haven't seen a single picture of any vest like that in history. Maybe that's the distinction between "waist coat" and "vest?" Personally I've always wanted a John Wayne Rio Bravo vest, but it's not exactly historically accurate, but it's still pretty cool. Maybe if i ever find one...no one will notice?!
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 4 жыл бұрын
Earlier in the period (1840s) they began putting that little cut in. You can see it on some illustrations. the ones today are a bit extreme, but those notches did exist, more for dressier vests.

I assume that you know that the last scenes in the original 3:10 To Yuma were shot in Elgin AZ. What happened to the locomotive in that movie. That was the same place where the railroad station scene was filmed forthe movie Oklahoma and I believe the last scenes of Red River were shot there too, that one featured the V&T Reno #11.

Hey santee. Quick question. In your opinion when did westerns start to become too Hollywood. Which one do you the think was the last real accurate western. If ever?
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, they have gotten more accurate. Since Tombstone you see a lot of attention to historical accuracy. Hostiles, Buster Scruggs (not the first sequence), Sisters Brothers are all pretty accurate compared to the ones in the 1970s.

Thank you for the video! Historically, how tall (or short) were vests? I made one using a Butterick History-series pattern and it stops just above the belt line on modern pants.
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 2 жыл бұрын
They didn't have belt lines like we do today. Most pants were high waisted. so a shorter vest works in that scenario.

On other than white shirts....tough. The rule of thumb I grew up with is no plaids and stripes in same outfit. Browns and blues together make my wife cringe, so I try not to do that. Dark reds go with black, brown, and even blue...so that is pretty safe I say.

Old west vest, the cargo pants of the old west. We replaced the pocket pistol with a cell phone charger. I found the canvas vest to be a bit surprising but it makes sense. You have a rugged job in an unpredictable climate you probably want something that is going to hold up no matter what. Speaking of vests just about every picture of me dressed up as a youngster was in a vest. It was my moms solution to dressing me up with most bang for the buck. I started refusing the vest around 11-12. Now I am watching this and going that 3:10 Yuma vest is mighty nice...

@@ArizonaGhostriders It was quite the scandal that Kennedy wouldn't wear a hat in public. I remember reading a news article from the day talking about the death of polite society. If a gentleman wasn't wearing a hat how could he properly greet a lady if he didn't have a hat to pinch between his thumb and forefinger and tip it to her.

Vests are a critical item of attire for Victorian wear because period shirts often had no breast pockets. It is essential to keep your bag of Bull Durham handy. Do they still make that? I haven't seen it recently. Never rolled very well. Always falling out. The vests available from reenactment vendors seem to cluster either on the excessively ostentatious delicate end of the spectrum or the uninteresting canvas end. My favorite vest is a (too hot for Arizona, mostly) heavy brown wool number with a down-turned notched collar. It is made by Filson, the famous Northwest supplier of outdoor clothing--- at a price. It complements any Victorian shirt, especially if the shirt is blue. I'm unsure if Filson still makes those.

Nice vest. It's actually not too hot for Arizona in the winter months. Interestingly, you can find many photos taken in the summer months that show men not wearing them.
