One delightful concoction that, supposedly miners made when being given a break was putting everything sweet you had, a chocolate bar, coffee grounds, sugar, whatever, into a pot with some water and boiling it up. It went by various names, but my favorites are Lobscous, Smack and Brew... I wouldn't want to DRINK it, but the names are hilarious. Also, I'm glad Rex likes his fruits and veggies. Very health concious dinosaur (When he isn't eating people, obviously!) Great video Santee!

My great grandmother wrote a cookie cookbook with recipes from her mother who settled in Kansas by covered wagon. She told me her mother was known for her molasses cookies and sourdough zwie back that were cooked over an open fire using a cast iron trivet and brick oven that could be set up and disassembled. The bricks were used to keep the family warm the next day when back on the trail.

Wheat floor has been around for thousands of years with the simple Johnny Cake or Journey Cake which is a mixture of floor and water and baked on a hot rock for a large part of that time. That's great to hear! I love the history of music: old bluegrass/folk songs, Civil War, turn of the century, early (20s) jazz, swing.. old west music would be fascinating as well! Music is like a time capsule, it is as 'real' today as it was all those years ago when they played & sang those same songs. I am an avid Gunsmoke radio show listener, & it always makes me happy to hear a period correct song playing in the background of a scene. Ring, Ring de Banjo comes immediately to mind. :) Thank you again for creating & sharing these videos!

The history of "Navajo fry bread" comes from their 300 mile "Long Walk". They were moved to lands where they could not grow their traditional foods. They survived starvation by cooking the government supplied flour, sugar and lard into fry bread. Santee can you do a video on the Navajo "Long Walk". I am very interested in this sort of subject because the Polish side of my family ended up in the U.S. from ethnic cleansing happening in Eastern Europe during the 19th century...

Enjoyed your video on Red Dead Redemption . I would like to see you do an overview of the new western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs by the Coen Brothers (just released on Netflix), or even an overview on all of the Coen Brothers westerns, Buster Scuggs, True Grit, No Country For Old Men and arguably , O Brother Where Art Thou.

In an episode of Gunsmoke I recently listened to, Miss Kitty told Marshall Dillon "I can pay for my own dinner." Isn't it more likely she would have called her evening meal "supper?"

My mom grew up during the Great Depression. She used to tell me about a treat her mom would make once in a while called the appleless pie. She said it tasted just like an apple pie just no apples were in it. She never made one for me instead she baked mayonnaise cakes.

Heard of those types of "recipes" during that era. My mom used to eat lard sndwiches.
