2017 Emmy Winner
The life of Michelle Kirlew, an active and vibrant mom, was turned upside down by pancreatic cancer. It usually strikes people over 70…she was diagnosed at 41. Facing a battle with a form of cancer that kills three of four patients in the first year, she fought. What followed was a whirlwind of appointments, tests, treatments, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
This emotional and physical rollercoaster usually happens out of sight and out of mind, behind closed curtains and doors at doctor’s offices and in homes. Michelle and her family want to change this. They believe her story can change lives. This is "Michelle’s Story."

Michelle is right. If you are a cancer patient, what matters to your loved ones, is to see you fighting to live. That’s how you show your love for them, and your love for your life. If your cancer ultimately ends your life, you’ve still won, just by committing to the battle. I am an adult who has lost both of my parents to cancer. I’ll never forget their strength and courage, and how they never gave up, never stopped trying to live. It will always mean the world to me.

I hate cancer so much. My Aunt was like Michelle, but she had breast cancer, not pancreatic. This was back in the days when they thought only older women could get breast cancer. She was left too long so then needed a double, radical Mastectomy. They are brutal surgeries but my Aunt fought the good fight all the way along, strong and gutsy and funny as the day is long. She laughed loud and long every single day. She was one of those people that made the world come alive, made it a better place. She took nothing seriously. Every single person she knew loved her and just wanted to be around her. She was told she beat it, so then she went on about her life. I'm sure she had forgotten she was ever that ill and honestly we did too. No one even considered cancer when she woke one morning unable to move her head, every time she did she would vomit. Eventually a Dr in the ED found her notes and the cancer treatment was noted there. While my aunt slept, the Dr came into the room and motioned to my mother. He touched his chest, then the back of his head and top part of the neck. My mother knew right then and there my Aunty was not going to be around for very much longer. From that day it was only 10 days until my Aunt died. The Cancer had metastasized and came back in the brain stem.

@@lisamccullough5150 My aunt had just turned 30 when she died, but she first noticed the lump when she was only 18. Unfortunately for my aunty this was back in the early 1980’s and even when they realised it was a type of cancer, (Cystosarcoma) it was, rare. They didn’t really understand it, back then they thought it was not found in the breast at all. It grows super fast and can also be benign, because she was so young they just assumed it was the benign form so took their time. It wasn’t the benign form. My aunt had 2 kids under 10 and her death left them double orphans. My mother is one of 8 siblings, out of those, 5 have had cancer. 3 have died from it. Two of my uncles have had 2 different types of cancer. Two died very early of other causes.

Such a brave and beautiful woman. A tiny mole on my cheek turned it melanoma in 1997, scans showed it was in my lymph nodes and so I had surgery to remove 46 involved nodes in my neck. Chemo for a year and a half, remission, but was told cancer could show up just about anywhere in my body because of the lymph nodes involved. So far, so good thank God. But the anxiety is there even after all this time. Two weeks ago I had major surgery in my abdomen, Dr. Opened me up to make sure it wasn't cancer, adhesions had taken over much of my large intestine, but no cancer thank God. Even tho I've suffered from major anxiety now and then, this awesome young woman showed me what true bravery is and how to fight the good fight. Her family stood strong beside her and I just know they must miss this witty, loving mom and wife so much. God bless her, RIP Michelle and blessings to her beautiful family....boo :)

My husband has been diagnosed with Lung Cancer and they cannot cure him. We are truly broken-hearted. 💔 My poor gentle husband has taken such good care of me. I must try to stay strong for him and take care of him. He has a biopsy on Tuesday then back to his Specialist on Friday. I will always be here for him. ❤

I'm SO glad I watched this! As a cancer patient myself, Michelle's story has inspired me so much more than I could ever say. She took on her cancer journey with unbelievable grace & emotional strength. Her husband & family are wonderful! It's obvious that she was 100% supported by them. I hope that they had people to lean on as well in those final days & beyond. I'm not in the final stretch of my journey yet, but I pray that when I get there, my husband & I will handle things as well as Michelle & her husband did. Peace be with the entire family.

“If he says to paint me blue with my ass up in the air, I will be buried that way “ I’ve got to say, as sad as this is to watch and being as I personally did not know her...THAT is a woman after my own heart. Michelle was a very loving, strong, courageous, feisty lady that didn’t back down and gave it her all to the bitter end!! I hope if I’m EVER faced with anything even remotely to this, that I can be the same way!! Her family fought this battle with her and my condolences to them, even though it’s five years later, since her death, that I’m seeing this video.

I worked with a lady around the same age at an assisted living home, she trained me as a med tech and she was my friend Lori. She always had stomach issues, bad periods and the regular doctor just kept prescribing acid reflux medicine. We pitched in and she went to see a gastro doctor and within 30 minutes, a simple blood test, she had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She passed away 3 days before the first year was up. I had seen her on Valentine's day and she looked so good and within 3 weeks we got calls if we wanted to see her before she passed, to come now. I saw a skeleton laying in the bed. Within that period of time it started spreading everywhere with no mercy. She left that evening. I've never been so undone and to think they can turn a woman into a man, a man into a woman but can't cure this type of cancer and so many others. It's so very sad

People are always so stressed and worried they are or will be a burden on the family members. I took care of my mom as she had brain cancer and lost her ability to stand and do pretty much anything. I can tell you it was alot of work but no it wasn't a burden as family members we don't think of it like this. If I had to do it again I would do it for a loved one. When you are going through this or are going to go through this it's usually just the person that is ill that thinks of the burden part. The family members will do everything out of love to help that person. It's not a burden.

Absolutely true. My poor Mama kept thinking she was a burden during her journey. NEVER did I think she was that; what she was and will always be, much like lovely Michelle here, is a graceful, strong, beacon of light that shines through the darkness. These beautiful people that suffered so much, have taught us not only how to live, but how to pass on from this plane. Such strong, beautiful beings, never considered a "burden" by those whom love them the most.

How true. I was a widow at 38. I cared for my late husband at home through his dying and death. It isn’t a “burden:” As far as I’m concerned, it was an honor and a privilege. It was the hardest yet most rewarding experience I’ve ever had and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Now, would I have done this for my biological mother? Absolutely not. She was a horrible abuser of her family and with whom I cut all ties a few decades before her death. I would ensure she had adequate food, clothing, shelter and basic medical care. Period. *People die the way they lived* and she abused everyone who cared for her, professional or personal up to her last breath. *No surprise there.*

I have staged 4 PC and I was inspired by Michelle s testimony. What a brave faithful loving person she was. We must get more funding for research for pancreatic cancer- like we have done for breast cancer and heart disease The answer is out there and there are brilliant doctors and researchers out there. Go to PanCan.org to get answers to questions, find clinical trials, find out how you can help. People are living years instead of months. Let’s make that possible for more people. I want to see my grandchildren grow up and I have a lot to do before I’m ready to leave this world. So I’m grateful for the excellent doctors I’ve had and the Folfirinox treatments that I made it through 6 months - I’m so blessed to be alive!

Doctors playing with hope giving chemotherapy making hopeful thoughts. Cancer cells are smart, you attack them they seems to die, but returns much worse and you die. Hospital making the most money with chemotherapy and patients are just a business for them. All the Quality of Life talk is just apart of their business. They knew how this whole thing will turn out in the end. If I am ever diagnosed with cancer I will tell the doctor thank you and goodbye.

Pancreatic cancer has killed my dear Aunt, her lovely daughter and my friend’s husband. It is a deadly cancer. We all know that chemo just gives you time and actually can spread the cancer, as chemo suppresses your immune system. I think cancer research should focus more on lifestyle and on eliminating the toxins in our foods and atmosphere. It is upsetting to see this poor lady, so full of determination to get better, deteriorate and die. It really is. Doctors are not miracle workers and should always be honest with their patients. Rest in Peace, sweet Michelle. So very sorry, medicine failed you.💖

To everyone reading this please turn to Jesus He loves you and wants to save you, He is the God of miracles, The bible tells us in Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, I seen God do amazing things in my life and in the lifes of people I know, He can do the same for you, In your darkest hour call on Him, God saved someone I love from an illness leading to death, There is nothing impossible to God, Its as simple as asking Jesus into your heart to be your personal Lord and Saviour, Jesus will answer you, I know this because it happened to me when I called out to God

I think this woman was incredibly inspiring but I'm not sure where I stand on the current treatment for cancer. Yes her treatment let her live for just over two years but clearly was really hard on her body. I have been reading a lot on treatment lately. It seems on many cases there is this around three year cycle where they have remission and then relapse try again and then pass away. You can't help wonder if chemo didn't contribute to it and the medical field won't do a study on how long people live who decline it.
